We need a company to come up with a jack that fits the Tesla jacking point rather than using a puck. The most similar design I can find is a Porsche jack

The reason why I got my skinny tyre from the US three years ago is because I won’t get a flat tyre and it has worked so far. Jokes aside these spare wheels need to be secured otherwise in a collision they will become a heavy projectile to passengers or drivers in the car. All spare tires are secured by a strap or bolt system this needs to be considered when placing heavy unsecured wheels behind yourself. Thanks Tom.

@Ludicrous Feed: I want to buy a proper spare tire for a Model Y, do you recommend buying the same OEM wheel on the car or are there comfy (quiet riding) tires you can suggest? Many thanks for your in-depth videos, awesome to have someone 'local' with all the Tesla knowledge :).

Hi Tom great video as usual, looks like you had a good workout with that jack. At 5:14 in the video you mentioned making sure the vehicle was in park but I wonder why you didn't mention that you should ALSO energise the EMERGENCY BRAKE for maximum safety against falling off the jack even on level ground.

Thanks John, that’s a good point 👍 Hold the Park button for a few seconds to activate the Emergency brake

Thanks for the video and actually changing your tyre out. How does this compare with the Modern Spare space saver? Doesn't that have a higher speed rating? Any pros/cons? Cheers

Looks pretty similar to the Modern Spare. And from the dot M rating looks to be as robust 👍

The other option if you do more remote driving is a full sized compatible wheel and tyre from a tyre shop. Bigger and heavier but insurance if you go more rural/remote. For me was $340 delivered but you need a scissor jack and brace as well

Thanks so much for showing the complete process! I’m in Adelaide and my sister is in Whyalla which is well out of the Tesla service area, so we’ll want a spare tyre, I expect. Do you know if it’s possible to buy a full size spare so that we aren’t limited to 80kph for what could potentially be a long drive to access a tyre shop? Thanks!
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Pleasure! The tyre technically has been tested to 130kph - if you want more details, I suggest contacting Braumach directly about recommended speeds

Thanks for that video Tom - have been planning to buy this product so I appreciate the demo and the discount! When you drove with it on, did your car come up with any errors or messages due to a circumference difference?

Quick question. How do you remove the cap covering the wheel nuts?
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
That’s fairly straight forward whether it’s the original Aero/Gemini/aftermarket caps - hands between the spokes and gently pull
@fangitjoe Жыл бұрын
Don't like the extreme angle of the wrench handle, causing bending forces on the nut instead of just twisting force. You should support the wrench at the end near the nut with your other hand to compensate and prevent damaging the nut.
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Yup good tip to reduce risk of stripping the nut
@nigeltechnz6 ай бұрын
Yup, my thoughts too, a right angle bend would be better, and support under the bend when working it hard

It is pretty disappointing that the Model Y has no anchor points in the back. It would have been easy enough to have included. Only way I thought would be to secure to the anchor on the back of the seats somehow.

Great video Tom. Having a spare tyre brings certain peace of mind. (Although being able to contact Tesla and have a Tesla mechanic come out and deal with the situation is also good depending of course on phone coverage). I don't own a Tesla (still considering options). One thing that makes me a bit tentative about choosing a Tesla is the ground clearance (I'm on a farm, where roads tend to be a lot less than main road specs). I understand the ground clearance for M3 is 140mm and for MY just under 170mm. My concern with tyre changing (especially with M3) would be that if the tyre is flat then you could have a bit of a struggle getting the jack(and the puck) under the car in order to jack it up. I wonder - with a tyre that is flat, what's the ground clearance like?
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
That’s a fair question. Depends on the profile of your tyre I suppose. You don’t necessarily need to use the puck - if you know where the anchor point is, then aim to have your jack sitting under the holes and hopefully that’ll give you enough clearance to lift 🤞
@grahamjones6519 Жыл бұрын
This is a very good point. I have had three flats in four years. First was a disaster, being on the Central Coast it took all day to get a new tyre to me and fitted and I had to go to Sydney to exchange. I had a puncture in the side of the tyre which is a right off. You need a new tyre. My solution is a full tyre on alloy rim. Note most of these temp tyres are useless if you have to drive them any distance. Regarding the jack I purchased a low profile hydraulic unit. Works perfectly and doesn’t require the workout Tom did with that ratchet device. The jack, pucs etc sit in the rear well. The spare tyre in the boot, removed if I especially need the space. My view is that the capacity for a full tyre should be integrated into the cars design.

@@grahamjones6519It's a spacesaver spare. It's not designed to d anything above 80km/h. They are designed to get you out of trouble in an emergency and they are great for that purpose.
@ratmanbrian Жыл бұрын
The old school method for addressing this problem is to drive the flat tyre wheel up onto a block of wood, a brick, or if necessary the spare wheel.

It's a common bolt pattern. Nissan, Toyota etc. use it. Does anyone know of a model of car with a spacesaver that can also fit a M3/MY ? Maybe available from their parts department or from a wrecker at a much cheaper price.

"fits very well in sub-floor"? No way, that is just sitting half way in the hole & is not secured; becomes a missile in an accident. Tesla has no config so as to be able to mount any space-saver underfloor & with screw in security. The only example of using the Braumach spare (or any other) requires stap ties etc & also uses a large space in the boot lying flat as it should. So your'e recommending to just throw in the boot like this? Please, is dangerous & unlike some other EVs which actually have space and mounting screw underfloor.
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Yes good point Paul as others have mentioned 👍 I’ve reached out to Braumach to see if there’s a solution for securing it further
