TesseracT presents P O R T A L S - a cinematic live experience, premiering on 12th December 2020.
Amongst the various challenges, TesseracT faced to deliver this event - drummer Jay Postones (who now lives in Austin, Texas) was unable to make it to the UK for the performance. However, the highly revered and long-time friend of the band, Mike Malyan (Monuments) was able to fill-in to add another layer to this unconventional event.
Jay and Mike catch up to discuss the recording process, the PORTALS setlist and how Mike was able to adapt those vital ‘Jay-isms’ into the performance.
Tickets are on sale now: www.portals.show
Premiere: 12th December 2020 7pm-GMT
Ticket holders have 3 days to watch on-demand after the initial broadcast
Don’t miss out on the Portals Pre-show at 6pm-GMT!

I’m sad that Jay was not able to be there, but commend him for being responsible and safe! I lost my dad to Covid and it’s no joke. I’m glad to see Mike stepping up, he’s great. And even better it’s seeing how well they get along and how much respect they have for each other.

It was super cool to see them hash out that time change in "Embers" because that change in rhythm is one of my favorite parts of that song. I'll openly listen to any TesseracT album but Altered State will always be the best in my opinion. The instrumental work on that album is tops.

It's true that it's far more difficult to film a drummer to a pre-record than it is a guitar or bass player. Valid point, and why "live" recordings are so important to film+record in one singular take.

I’m so stoked to see them talking about the drum roll in Nocturne @ around 28:00! I actually commented on that roll in the music video in Portals. That’s so sick. Awesome job and awesome video!

I know i'm late for the party but yb played me The Portals and after just a few bars I immediately realised something has changed and I was thinking "hmm ok Jay is doing something new/weird/different but also kind of cool LIVE? - unlike him but fine. About a minute later I started watching it and my first thought was "omg what has the lockdown done to Jays hair?!" And then a few very confusing seconds later it finally hit me "that's not Jay!". Then after a quick Google search I arrived here and guys: this was fkn EPIC!!! An awesome display of great musicianship, mutual respect and understanding. Jay has been one of my favourite drummers for years now and an inspiration and Mike, bro, congratulations and respect - that was an outstanding performance - although a bit different to what my ear got used to over the years I really enjoyed I liked your take on it. Good luck to you both lads!

Had to laugh so hard when the cam switched back to mike at 31:28 - was so random to see him cramp what seemed like endless amounts of cymbal felt that just happen to suddently chill on his floor into that bag. hahaha - a true delight that did not go unnoticed! Gotta love that dude.

Mike Malyan, I hereby dub thee officially a part of the Tesseract family in my heart. I love you as a musician and as a person. Congrats on the gig and you did such an amazing job! It’s so refreshing to see the actual official drummer of the band sharing the spotlight with also an amazing drummer filling for him in his gig. I have never ever seen such level of musical maturity! BOTH on the discussion of the drumming of the Portals event? ... I’m in awe at both of you! The musical converstion is so natural between you! Hope the drummer discussions continue in the future...

Is it a certain software program that mutes drums for you to practice to the rest of the music, or do the drummers get just the music tracks without drums to play along with?
@Charners
@Charners 3 жыл бұрын
He has the individual 'stems' of the songs so he can drag, mute, chop and change volumes on any of these. Its all done using a DAW program. Logic, Cubase, studio 5 etc

It's possible to remove an instrument from a song but to my knowledge they have to remove the vocals as well, at least as of the mid 2000s when I spoke to some company who did that. I doubt much has changed though
