Unedited performance of The Grey from TesseracT's War of Being album recording session at Middle Farm studios, May/June 2022.
In this video, myself and Amos are playing along to the demo audio. The drum mix is by Peter Miles.
This song was captured quite early in the recording process. Not long after this, we added a couple more crash cymbals to the setup (and we can never REALLY have too many cymbals...)
When tracking this song for the album, we went for full takes - I played the song all the way through four or five times. Then we'd listen to each section in the control room, and comp together the most energized takes. I find this to be a really great way of working - you end up with the best of the best, and it's a relatively fast process.

every time i hear and see these amazingly high quality playthroughs, that might be augmented by samples, but are definitely more natty than the record, i can't help but think, why can't we have drums that sound like this on records. i think it's really sad that phenomenal drummers such as jay aren't fully represented authentically on record because of this chase for consistency.

This is 100% mics, and no sample replacement, or editing - this be me. The drums are also kinda prominent in this mix, on purpose. For the album though, it has to be more of a balanced experience for the listener. You can definitely still hear the room though on War of Being, which is something I expressed was a non negotiable

Incredibly clean take, Jay. I know in your 1-Take Sacrifice video, you explain how it was a very "human" performance, where not everything was necessarily up to par. I love that, but I gotta say, you're like a well-oiled machine sometimes. I can't sense anything off with this take. Also big love to Amos.

Haha, so true 😂 - I felt the impulse to let people know this was a single unedited take as 99.9% of drums for heavier music these days is either programmed or edited to the grid. There’s nothing wrong in doing this for production reasons, but it seems kinda rare to show a human performance these days for this kinda stuff

Jay, do you find yourself doing 1,2 or 3 full takes and grabbing the best from them in editing? Or, do you do a couple of takes and choose the best one take and edit it for slight timing issues. Do you go back and add to or correct these one takes with "punch in's". Great performance as always. Cheers!

I saw Tesseract in Barcelona recently and Jay was the biggest stand out for me at the show, instrumentally the band was absolutely locked in, but the groove this man plays with as well as how immaculate the drum tones were in the mix was just top tier! The vocalist was the only weak link on the night unfortunately

Not to take anything away from the great vocals but a instrumental version of the album would be pretty sweet.

Great work on this. One question: it says "1-take drum performance" in the title, but then in the description you mention comping takes. So is this video made up of comped takes or was it one full take? Either way, impressive work! You're a killer drummer.
@JayTesseracT
@JayTesseracT 2 ай бұрын
Good question! This is a start-to-finish performance 1-take. For the album audio though, we’ll record songs all the way through (when possible!) then run through and slice together the best bits from each take

@@JayTesseracT Awesome! That makes sense, and I assumed that's what you were referring to! That's the best way to record an album IMO. Hell yeah dude, I'm gonna learn some Tesseract now :) Cheers bro

I have a question, not at a drummer myself so this come purely from my ignorance: why is the hi hat constantly ticking? Not the first time I see this, for instance many of Matt Halpern's playthrough have this feature, but here I tried to focus on the hi hat sound and I cant ear it, is it something he does for himself? Like it helps him stay on time or something?

Jay, thanks for posting. I'm not sure if this is going to seem like a dumb question... do you at all need to resist getting distracted? These are fairly nuanced parts - which I recognize you have played hundreds of time already between writing and tracking and tour - but does that ever pose a memory issue?
@JayTesseracT
@JayTesseracT 2 ай бұрын
Working with distractions is something we have to get used to as musicians - as on stage at a show, there's nearly always a distraction. I don't forget parts generally though, no. I practice them to the point where they're very much cemented in my mind.
