Dave and the Gang - thank you for another fantastic video! I was seriously considering 890 Adv R and T7, but all of those bikes are too heavy for my level of offroad experience. I found myself having 10x fun on CRF250 compared to F850GS. Finally I've sold both CRF and GS, got myself a 2021 701 Enduro and... I love it! it has a weight of CRF, more power than T7, 10k km service intervals. I am more than happy with the simplicity or riding modes and that Offroad mode stays on even after turning off the ignition. Quick shifter is working great, clutch is soft, engine is having a lot of power, breaks absolutely awesome. It even has gear indicator... Two things I do not enjoy is the sound of the engine on low rpms (I always wonder if it ain't broken ;) ) and how hot the exhaust gets. Other than that - 701 Enduro is a perfect tool for me! Cheers, lads!

@@JohannesDalenMC Johannes, thank you for the comment - I am happy to see we are watching the same videos on KZbin :) Yes, please give 701 a try. I really wonder what your thoughts on that bike would be. Starting 2021 so called 'Abs dongle' is a stock feature, so switching between road and off-road modes on the go takes 3 seconds and it stays as chosen. You can even take the key out and it won't return to nanny mode from off-road abs and tc. Cool stuff. (You can fully disable tc and abs, but those will come back to off-road mode with abs on front only and limited tc).
@JohannesDalenMC3 жыл бұрын
@@rfk76 Yes I recognized your name! I have ridden the 701 (de-tuned version to half hp output) for 5 minutes about a year ago. That was the first time I've ever ridden a thumper, and I recall I really felt it was shaky and full of vibrations. At that time I rode the T7, so I kind of compared it to that. Now you might know that I ride a DRZ, and a test ride of the 701 would most likely be a whole 'nother experience as I've developed as a dual sport rider and thumper-enthusiast. I still love my DRZ, but I'm always watching the market to see what my next bike might be. The DRZ is closing in on 20 years old and I know its known for its reliability, but you never know with old things. I would also very much like ABS on my bike as I've had a few close calls with MX tires and no ABS on the DRZ. I also have a strong feeling that the extra power of the 701 engine will make it a much better "tourer". Thanks for sharing your thoughts, please keep me posted on how the bike does and I will let you know when I've test ridden it once more :) Have a great day my friend!

@@JohannesDalenMC :) I am watching your every new video and I really enjoy it, especially the honesty of it. KTM/Husqvarna has made some additional changes to the 690/701 engine recently to reduce the vibrations, but yes, it is still a thumper (and it makes a lot of strange noises on low rpm!), but during a ride it is smooth as a butter (as for thumper! ;) ) Cheers, mate!

Fantastic review. I've personally owned the '15 1190R, the '19 790R, the '20 690 Enduro R, and the '21 890R. I'd echo pretty much all of your thoughts. The 890R is a fantastic bike for your day trips and long rides alike. I love the power and comfort of the big 1190, but the weight and suspension are too much of as liability off-road. I love the off road prowess of the 690, but I have a lot of highway between me and the trails and it's just exhausting on the 690. The 890 is the goldilocks bike for me. It's got all the right compromise in all the right places for a big adventure bike.

Hi Dave - an alternative to rebound damping adjustment on a PDS bike is to tweak the HS compression. Suspension turners and the Racetech Suspension Bible have told me if the backend kicks up it’s too much compression; out to a side, it’s too little (bottoming). I take 1/4 - 1/2 turn HS compression off and it’s super balanced - and you can keep the rebound a bit faster to provide better traction over fast and big bumps. The end result is better comfort too - the rear can move through it’s travel a little easier. I find the rebound stays the same through dramatically different preload (passenger/not) and compression settings.

Both of these bikes are amazing, but for serious off-road trails both are way too heavy, especially if you ride solo like I prefer. My choice for a bike that can do anything off-road is the KTM 500 EXC-F: street legal, and with ECU, air box, and exhaust mods can perform to the skill level of the rider. The weight of the 500 makes learning technical trails much easier, and helps build confidence off-road much quicker. The only option I can see is to have the big and heavy adventure bikes for the 'adventure rides with mild to moderate off-road trails' and a dedicated lightweight enduro machine like the 500 for the serious off-road adventures.

Top review.... Very informative... I'm currently sat with a 2016 KTM690 and a 2015 BMW R1200GSA in the garage, thinking of chopping in both for a 890R 🤔🤔 Out of interest, did you switch to a MITAS on the rear for day 3? Safe riding mate 👍🏻

The 890 is superior in terms of suspension and engine power and accessories and most importantly the latest iteration of Motorcycle Traction Control, that has already saved many riders. There is a huge price difference between the 890 and T7 although that gap is widening. The T7 is lovely to ride, has great handling and a beautiful engine and is less expensive. If you aren't a fast rider and don't intend to jump it off small erosion mounds then the original suspension will do OK, provided you don't take weight at the back or are a heavy rider. If you are on the heavy side...0ver 84 kilos you need a firmer spring on the rear. Always ensure static sag is within limits prescribed. I own a T700 and a Husky 701.

Hi Dave, this is for sure the best video on the 890 Adv R so far - well done!!! Mine will be delivered by the end of April in about 3 -4 weeks from today. Testriding it I did not really like the screen it comes with (I am 6'4") so I am wondering which screen is mounted on Glen Forman's bike... Please find out and let me know!!! Good review and appreciate every KZbin video that doesn't use cheesy click-bait tactics like extreme titles (Dont' buy the 890 Adventure R or the universe will explode!) One quibble: Was the standard KTM tool kit not on board during the first trip through the whoops? Riding in places like that, I would think a basic set of tools (among other things like first aid kit and water) is standard equipment before leaving the house. Just sayin'.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV2 жыл бұрын
T. K. you are quibbling. :). I'm trying desperately not to answer this but you are doing my head in. Water in the vest. First aid kit in the vest. Emergency locator on the vest. Tools in the double ended dry bag that took tripod. Oh dear, I can't believe I just did that. :(

How would you compare the 890 suspension to the rally raid suspension for the t7?
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV2 жыл бұрын
The 890 is better. But in terms of the T7, the Rally Raid is an amazing improvement.
@defylifeadventure3 жыл бұрын
The 890 is a fantastic bike. It requires zero skill or technique in many instances and just get you to where you want to go be it the top of a rocky hill climb, down a wet boggy track, or tearing it up on corrugated rippio. It also produces more HP and torque than the old 990 adventure and more torque lower down and throughout the rev range. It's downsides for me are seat comfort (which I haven't yet fixed despite the rally seat) and wind protection which is a huge issue on cold weather long distance riding.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV3 жыл бұрын
Yeah cold weather riding that'a a good point. I like the standard seat. I found it comfortable.

I have a Yamaha Tenere 700 on order but the KTM 890 Adventure R keeps whispering to me. Like a beautiful girl that you know would be fantastic but would require such a large amount of maintenance. Is it worth it over the T7? I have an R1250GS Adventure for the longer road centric rides. So the mission for the new bike is the Back Country Discovery Routes in the USA or similar.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV3 жыл бұрын
For BDR, you'll have to get the T7 front suspension sorted, which isn't too much.
@defylifeadventure3 жыл бұрын
Isn't there less maintenance and longer intervals on the 890 vs T700? No linkage to maintain, and 15,000km oil changes and valves at 30,000km

Thinking of trading in my t7 for one of these next week. For the price I paid for it, investing in suspension wasn’t a really good option. @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV3 жыл бұрын
The value is there in the componetry. The key question people have to ask themselves is how much do they want to invest in their sport. Then of course there's brand loyalty.
@TommyNitro3 жыл бұрын
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I'm not a brand loyalist for sure. In my thinking, any of these bikes are more capable than I. I think I may still lean towards something like the T7 due to reliability concerns. But even then the reliability gap (Yamahas "never" break and KTMs break "all the time" stereotypes) may be overblown.
