I don't think manual mode changes gear. I think it sets the max gear that you want the transmission to use. I think.

Correct. It's not an auto stick as many reviewers seem to think. It sets the max available gear so you can hold it to a certain gear when driving down steep inclines or if you're cruising on a highway that has many hills or into a strong wind where leaving it in a high gear would cause it to shift a lot. That being said, on US roads, the Cherokee will rarely ever see 9th gear, unless you're seriously exceeding speed limits. It's a World car, so it's designed for other markets as well that have high speed limits where 9th gear may come into play (over around 85 MPH). I've never seen 9th gear in my 2014 Trailhawk, and it only gets into 8th if cruising on a flat or downhill at around 70MPH. There are several inaccuracies in this review. I think he actually referred to it as a Grand Cherokee at one point.
