This was the first game I ever completed 100% on the Xbox 360. It was hell because one of trophies was to drive on every road on the island and anyone that's played the game knows how massive it is. Took me days to complete but I loved it. Had so many music cds burned to the 360 and would play this game all night during summer holidays with headphones on and occasionally when driving along the mountain routes I'd see an amazing view of the island in the distance that made me stop and take it in. It'll always hold a special place in my heart.

I liked unlocking all roads in the sequel, which is even more gruelling - because it's all the asphalt plus all the mapped dirt roads, while the original only had asphalt. And at the end, there's always just a tiny nearly invisible piece of street missing.

To me, this game will remain one of the top 10 racing games ever made. I especially like the scale of it. Even new Forza games don't give you the sheer scale of an open map as this does. Really, what a tremendous game.

though i can say for its time it was definitely a massive technical achievement and was a lot of fun for a kid in the mid 00s, a game like the crew is essentially this but more in every regard. the map is 10x the size, more cars, more customisation for the cars, more types of cars, bikes, monster trucks boats planes. better handling better graphics, a levelling system for the vehicles, more property and garages to have etc. to have it up there purely for nostalgia is warranted of course but it racing games have come a long way since 06.

@@SH_Hof I personally prefer 1 over 2, especially because of how addicting it was. Juiced 2 felt kinda tedious at times. The career mode was amazing for its time. It had a calander system with randomly generated race events and you can even host your own events. Betting is more immersive, you can gain respect by raising bets, accepting opponent's bet and scaring them with a high bet. But you can lose respect by backing out and lowering bets. It also has drag racing which in my personal opinion is the best mode. The crew system was better as well. Instead of paying 1 million for driver x and own every crew race in seconds, you have to actually increase your crew members skill and composure by making them race in juiced 1. And finally the mobile phone, you can take crew challenges for more respect or do pinkslip races. There are also many things that I haven't mentioned. But hey! If you prefer 2 anyways, then who am I to judge? 😂

I legit dont get why ppl dont fully play the game before making a review. I kniw you have to get to Champion rank before you unlock Hardcore mode but like damn, it's not that hard to do even just starting off. Use cheat engine to get alot of money and then buy every house and every car you see and you will eventually unlock it. A few ppl have tried making the task of getting to Hardcore mode way easier, it just a hassle of doing it.

I have a specific memory of this game, that being when I was flying in a Ferrari I had just bought on one of the freeways. There were two dudes driving side by side at a somewhat normal speed going the same way as me. As I got closer I started to hear them chatting over the mic about their days and as I flew by one of them said "hey there goes a guy in a Ferrari" I said "hey guys" and we chatted for a minute then I went about where I was headed. It felt so cool and natural. I loved this game.

Also, i was surprised you didn't mention the weird gameplay element of having to buy various properties to house your cars, and most properties only had room for 2 or 3 cars, and sometimes you'd have to search through your various properties to figure out where you last parked your Cadillac Sixteen or whatever.

I never owned the first title but I CANT WAIT for you to review TDU2. That’s the one I had on the 360. Sunk a lot of hours into that game and have a lot of good memories with friends and family playing it too. Easily one of my fav racers.

My favorite racing game of all time. I love the map, the more “classy” feel, and the effort it takes to earn cars and real estate. I like Forza Horizon, but there are several problems that make it inferior. In Forza Horizon, you literally get cars every five seconds via wheel spin or gifts. You never earn your collection. I swear I had a million bucks and over five cars in the first hour of playing Forza Horizon 4. In TDU, I EARNED every car and was proud to have it. The dealerships in TDU are a phenomenal idea as well. I think Forza Horizon could benefit from those. Especially with Forza Vista. Can you imagine walking around a dealership with those graphics!? Lastly, in Forza Horizon any car can be upgraded to almost any class, which really messes with the balance and purpose of your car collection. I prefer TDU where a “B class” car is always a “B class” car - you can upgrade it, but it still stays within its class. I really hope TDU SC is a great reimagining of this classic.

Oh god yes my favourite car game ever made. It's a bit drole nowadays but damn this was insane back in the day.. Originally I had tdu for the ps2, which has all this amazing map except on ps2!! Imagine having all that to explore as a kid on your ps2... Ultimately the 360 version revamped the game somewhat, and yeah, it's just an amazing piece of gaming history, just dated today, and possibly a bit lacklustre to new players in comparison to what's on offer now

My first Test Drive was 3, on a 286 black&orange screen laptop in about 1993. TDU1, however, even my mother enjoyed cruising around with on a wheel setup, years later. Like, she legit had fun. And I see there's been a revival of sorts with TDU Platinum, gonna have to check it out.

I remember there was a broken challenge in tdu where you could make $10k in like 10 seconds that i did over and over to get rich. You had to hit a certain speed on a curvy mountain road but if you just turned around at the start it was straight and super easy to hit the goal speed.

Great review! Disagree with some points but I loved the game so much when it came out. I remember glitching into the race track and drifting with my friend for hours. Also the in-game locations were somewhat accurate to real life which was a nice feature but mainly the idea of going to dealerships was brilliant. I hope the new TD is similar to the first game.

L.A. Rush is a game with an impressive city map size for PS2 but the race entry fees sucked most of the fun out of the game due to having to re-play the early races over and over to earn money each time you wanted to re-try a higher level race.

Only few things were better like an extra island to drive on, weather and smoother roads, but mostly it turned up being worse then the first game. The physics were worse, horrible narrative with annoying characters, pointless walking around and house decorations, no custom radios and the visuals aren't really a step up, everything looks very artifical almost like a cartoon. They got a new producer for the second game and it seems like she wanted to make a new Sims game, but got stuck with a driving game instead.

Test Drive Unlimited and Dead Rising were literally the reason I bought an Xbox 360. It was the first time I ever had the money to buy a brand new console, and I bought one with both of those games. TDU was simply incredible! Easily one of my favourite racing games of all time. I ended up buying the official 360 steering wheel and it elevated the game to legendary levels, and made the game an absolute joy to play. I'd spend hours just cruising around, driving nice cars, buying cool houses, taking in the sights....it really was amazing! I remember you could even rip CDs to the Xbox hard drive, and if you put 'TESTDRIVE' somewhere in the playlists name, it would show up on the in-game car stereo like it was a CD with track names on the display and everything! I think you could do it with 3 or 4 playlists/albums, so it was almost like you had a CD multi-changer in the car! I can't tell you how many hours I spent just cruising around Hawaii listening to tunes. Good times.... That game was the ultimate 'driving game'. I always say, it wasn't necessarily a great _racing_ game, but it was one of the best _driving_ games ever made! The only games that even come close to it these days are The Crew and The Crew 2, which I believe was made by largely the same dev team that worked on Test Drive Unlimited, but those games are nowhere near as good. The map on The Crew (and The Crew 2) is amazing, it's recreation of America and is undoubtedly the star of the show, but the car handling is very arcade-y, and The Crew 2 can get quite cartoon-y with it's over-the-top customization options. You can't buy new houses either, you're just stuck with one. TDU needs a remaster or a reboot.

I remember buying this game second hand for PS2 not knowing what to expect. I was in the mood for a racing game and the back of the cover showing Hawaii had me intrigued. Turned out to be one of my favourite racing games ever. The size of the map was mind blowing for the time, a ton of cars to choose from and the fact that you had to drive to the dealership was so cool, the different challenges, and you could even have custom races against people online. Truly a classic.

THE best open world racing game of all time. There were no other games quite like TDU at its heyday. The subpar physics were easily made up for with the rest of this game's personality, which didn't exist in any other racing game at the time. I mean, you literally had buy your own houses/condos so that you'd have garage space for your new cars. You actually got to walk around car dealership showrooms. You played the game because you wanted to be the most balled out car collector on the island. Ugh. No other game made downtime so much fun. My friends and I used to spend endless hours doing unofficial, freeroam, GPS-based point-to-point races across the map. My god. That was the peak of gaming fun for me. So much nostalgia for this masterpiece. Thank you for this video.
