I made a mistake about the map size. It's actually 1000 square miles. There's also 90 cars and bikes in the base game, not 150.

Many do remember, especially when their childhood and later life changing decision are associated with this game, which is important to the said person but not to many others. Review of a game includes feeling from the reviewer toward that game, not toward themselves. Pardon me, Kacey, but your TDU review video is a bit too personal. But please, no hard feeling. I guess there are markets for the style of game review video like you created with TDU. I wish the greatest success in life to you.

Yeah. It took six years for a game to have a bigger map than Test Drive Unlimited and it was the sequel which ran on the same hardware. Test Drive Unlimited was the game that started people's obsession with open world racing games. TDU2, the Forza Horizon games, The Crew 1, 2 and probably a lot of the newer Need For Speeds owe their existence to Test Drive Unlimited.

On PC TDU was brilliant. Where it really shined was in terms of online interaction, PVP races, and just casual cruising around with friends and groups of randoms. The single-player content was really there just to provide a mechanism to earn funds with which to buy the vehicles you wanted to play online. My memory is a little hazy on this, but you mentioned that there were only automatic transmissions available, and I don't think that was true of the PC version as I recall playing it with my Momo FFB wheel at the time and using the paddle shifters.
@MontegoReviews3 жыл бұрын
When I said there were only automatic transmissions, I was talking about the PlayStation 2 version of the game.
@johannes01243 жыл бұрын
The funds you earned playing the single player missions were very low in comparison with the cost of the cars and especially the houses. At first I couldn't believe how other players were able to buy those expensive mansions. Then I uncovered the big secret of this game. Cars with high mileage would rapidly sell at maximum price (9.9 million) at auction. The game itself would buy them from you. Thus generating you large amounts of money.

Thanks. I talk about the previous games in the series so people who have never played them can understand where the franchise came from.

Test Drive wasn't always about generic racing games, as the first three titles focused on the experience of driving while providing the challenge of escaping cops and getting to the destination on time, all while struggling to avoid crashes as much as possible. That is what made the series warrant its name: Test Drive, which by the fourth game was lost completely up until this game brought it back and redefined it. That's why they're still trying to keep it alive despite the parent companies already filing for bankruptcy. Though I will say that I was not aware that the PC version is continuously being supported by the community, which is a very good thing to hear given it will never see a re-release because of too many licensing fees. But I guess that's what happens when you get a little too carried away with sponsors.
@ludicrousfool79534 жыл бұрын
Many developers of this game would go on to form Ivory Tower, which has developed The Crew series for Ubisoft. I like this game, but I do think it can feel very aimless as there’s no real goal throughout and no structured narrative to tie the events together. I’m not complaining about there being no story, it just feels odd there isn’t one since the introduction of this game suggests there’s a (light) one to follow. Also, for a game emphasizing customization, it’s strange how the vehicles received far less attention than your character in that regard.
@MontegoReviews4 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize that the character has better customization than the cars.😂
@steelin6663 жыл бұрын
The game feels aimless because it is so, and on purpose. It wasn't called Unlimited just to put you in constraints of some narrative. The introduction is exactly that - a takeoff point to show some basic context for who you are and what you're supposed to do - you're a rich, spoiled dude/chick that went to Hawaii to enjoy driving fast cars around the island. There is a loose progression path to follow, but the game - in adherence to its name - mostly leaves you the choice at how to approach it. It's unorthodox, but I love it. The emphasis is put on the cars and the exprience of driving. It's less of a racing game and more of a lifestyle sim.

When TDU released, I had to build a new PC to run it. I rarely missed a day playing it and was online the day the last server was taken down. My favorite mode was "Hardcore". The community was mostly great to cruise with, especially in Hardcore. Ever hear of the "Ace Project"? TDU ranking was structured such that it was extremely hard for anyone to make the rank of "Ace". I had an idea for a program to alleviate the problem. A gentleman in England volunteered the coding, I made the graphics for the UI. The only drawback was you had to restart your profile with no money, cars, or houses. But once all missions were completed, you had the "Ace" rank. Fair winds and following seas to all.
@ilon779911 күн бұрын
What were the benefits of “Ace” rank? Or it was just to finish the game for 100%?
@GySgt_USMC_Ret.11 күн бұрын

Nice review, although I don't agree that ps2/psp versions are bad. I owned both and considering the platform that they were released on, they were really good. And I was more impressed with these ports considering tha hardware (although a bit dodgy graphics of 360, compared to the potential of the console, are understandable because it's such early release for 7th gen.)

What drove me nuts about the map is how unsmooth the roads area. Especially in the mountain with a lot of elevation changes, the road just bounces your car all over the place and makes it undriveable. I've been to Oahu, the roads aren't that bad lol.
@MontegoReviews3 жыл бұрын
The steep elevation changes is one of the few things that I don't like about Test Drive Unlimited. It's really annoying doing one of the car delivery missions that can take over 10 minutes if you're trying to drive carefully for the bonus cash only for the car to get damaged because you hit the underside of the car on the road.
