Thank you for this video! My starter was seized, ended up being broken magnet pieces jamming up the armature. Cleaned it up, reinstalled and starts like a champ. Thanks for showing those pins to hold the brushes, I used coat hanger and it worked like a dream.

I rebuilt a starter for a Briggs 2 cylinder flathead. The engine had been sitting outside for a long time. I carefully took the starter apart, the top bushing was froze. Took apart, cleaned put back together and it worked great. Patience, and being careful is the key. This is a great video, with very useful information. It would have been a big help if I seen this first.

I had a 14.5 Briggs that the magnets broke loose in the starter housing. I carefully inspected where they went, cleaned the surfaces, and epoxied them back in place. I then adjusted the valves and it worked like a charm.

Taryl; I was confronted a few years ago with the same problem you had (worn upper bushing) on the horizontally opposed B&S engine starter. The bushing was so worn that the armature pole pieces were rubbing on the magnets in the housing! I went to the local auto-electric place (Brian Roberts Auto Electric in Victoria BC Canada) and showed them the top housing with the worn bushing. The guy went into the back for a couple of minutes and came out with an exact replacement. Cost was $2.00. As part of the starting system overhaul I also replaced the wimpy U1 battery with an Optima "Red Top" car size battery, replaced the solenoid with a full size car solenoid, and replace all the starter circuit wiring with 4 gauge or thicker wire. When I hit "start" on this thing now you better believe it starts! The only problem now is I keep breaking the plastic starter gears... they split in half. I guess they can't handle the torque. Vince

There is a bushing/ brush/ spring kit that has the top bushing you need for the twin starter. It's aftermarket and cross references to the Briggs brush kit. Not sure who makes it, could be rotary if I had to guess. I ordered one recently for one of those starters.
@TarylFixesAll9 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Do you know the part number?
@TarylFixesAll9 жыл бұрын
+suchfunstuff Your right I found it Rotary has it with the bushings. They're the only ones that offer it with the bushings. Briggs # is brushes & springs only. Thanks for the lead on that part. There's my dinner!

Great vid. I wish I had seen this before rebuilding the bendix on my Craftsman, but it works ok, but even with a charged battery and what I think are good connections and solenoid (new) I have to physically bounce the tractor to get it to turn the starter. Maybe new brushes? Great fashion statement with the cutoff tweed blazer! Glad the bear got Slippers.

I have an old B & S 8 HP engine manufactured in 1967. I runs well but I want to put on an electric starter. My question is I see many are available but do I use a plastic gear or a metal gear? I think my flywheel is metal, not aluminum or plastic. So does that mean I have to install a metal gear?
@fred3068013 жыл бұрын
So if the magnets and all cracked up and and a good sized chuck of the magnet is missing, It is junk. Odd thing cold start most of the time worked fine. Once it ran for a while and you turn it off it was hard to start. I got this mower used. I started screwing around with it because the hot wire that goes to the starter it was hanging down, flapping around. I am thinking someone only used one wrench and broke that plastic peace.
@GuiltyMalice2 жыл бұрын
What if the starter is just spinning really slowly? The starter solenoid is buzzing loudly but it’s fine because I replaced it and the new one is doing the same thing. The battery is also good and I cleaned all the connections. The starter just won’t spin fast enough to engage.

I am confounded. My Briggs and Stratton 14HP Vanguard (Model #261777, Type #0144-01) engine's starter turns over very slow or not at all when the starter is installed. I have checked valve adjustment. I turn off the gas when I turn it off so no gas can siphon into the crankcase. When starter is removed, starter runs as should be expected. No binding or noises that I can detect. I disassembled the starter this past Saturday and cleaned up the brushes and armature. And lubed the end cap. I'm very tempted to buy a new starter but have this feeling that I don't need a new starter...that I'm missing something. Could a failure in the compression release mechanism/system be be the problem? Do you have any advise/council? Great, fun video by the way.
