Three wheels are also great for wintertime. When there's ice on the road you can have a lot of fun with this thing, drifting around and stuff.

In my opinion, Piaggio started these 3 wheels to make as much as possible folks riding a motorscooter above 125cc without any additional license. And it works ;-) on the lookout myself :-)

Thar and - Its much much, much safer ride then 2 wheeler. I have one for some time now. Any slippery muddy sandy etc road. Also he is incorrect to say it doesnt add at higher speed turns - you can feel better stability. My humble opinion.

Good fair weather, clean road review. I'm on my second MP3 500. I only traded my 2009 in for a 2016 to get the anti-lock brakes and traction control. All your comments are true but... except for the Yamaha Niken, I think you would have a hard time finding a safer ride in the wind and rain or on mud, leaves, sand, gravel, brick, across steel plates or railroad tracks. And do not try braking more than gently in those situations, especially in a turn, on a two wheeler unless you want to have a bad day.

Thanks for your feedback. I can hardly say anything about the Niken, there was heavy rain the day I test rode it and I didn't feel at ease (not because of the Niken itself, but because I wasn't used to it and the conditions didn't help...)

Very good review. In my opinion though you missed two (very important) details: stability on difficult situations. Of course you couldnt figure this out in such a short review, but just wanted to say that I was presented to the 3-wheel advantages that day when a dog crossed the road ahead of me and I couldnt do much more than hit the breaks hard, and the scooter showed great stability and helped me not to fall. Another moment is when the road is wet, or when you need to pass through the Tram rails. Other than that, great video!

Good honest review. I can relate to both sides of the story. I ride the MP3 now for more than a year and really grown to love it. But....last year i also wanted to get a motorcycle license. Why? Because i got addicted to the freedom of moving through traffic on a "balance-vehicle". And all the things they teach you can be applied one-on-one on the Mp3. I can imagine that unexperienced riders can be a real danger. As for me, for years i have ridden 50cc scooters to work, and i have my car licence since the stone-age (1987) ;-) so traffic wise the motorccylce exam was easy. I now own a Kawasaki Versys 650 and my beloved Piaggio Mp3 (originally sold in Paris, then imported to Holland, hence her name "Parisienne"). The Versys feels much more secure and rigid on the highway, the ride is indeed more agile and the seating position is superior not to mention the power delivery and acceleration. However, because of the practicality, the fact that the Mp3 is not your everyday scooter here in Holland and the fact that i have gotten to know many other MP3 riders will make me keep her.

Thank you for your valuable feedback! I also know personally 2 persons who bought a MP3 because it can be ridden without a motorcycle licence, and both decided then to get their motorcycle licence. This is one good reason to love the MP3: it can be the initial step before bringing new riders on 2 wheels! The owner of the MP3 in my video is one of them. He now has a motorcycle but he has also kept his MP3. He rides his bike only during weekends, but he still prefers his MP3 for a daily use. PS: I like very much the fact that you call it "Parisienne" :)

I've had my 2007 MP3 in the States and liked the maxi scooters, but always found the front end a bit bouncy and unstable at higher speeds. With the MP3's heavier front, that it gone and the ride is totally comfortable for me. I like the review, but you really should have tried the locking trick on some smooth pavement first. :)

Glad you've enjoyed the review, and thank you for your owner's feedback. You're right, I didn't choose the best place to try the roll-lock. I got used to it after a few tries anyway. It's much easier to activate it on smoother pavements, and it's better to do it as late as possible :)

As a biker, it was quite easy for me to ride this 3-wheeler, but only people with a death wish would try to ride it without any biking experience and without a few hours of training. I think the test rider misses the point of the 3 wheels, its not just to make a stable foot off the ground stop, its also for traction on different surface conditions and levels. Other than that its a good test ride!

Glad you've enjoyed the test ride! However I disagree with you. My opinion is that 3 small wheels on a heavy scooter aren't better than 2 wheels on a light scooter. My motorcycle was at service yesterday, and I had a Honda SH125i as a courtesy bike. 2 high wheels, and half the weight of the MP3... Believe me, it's much safer, nimbler, and easier to ride.

Since there seems to be a question about the credentials in terms of bikes ridden of people commenting on this review let me state mine before I comment. I live in Australia so some of the bikes I talk about may not be available where you live. The first bike I ever rode belonged to my brother. It was a Russian made thing called a Voshkod - it was a pretty awful bike - that was about 1970. In 1971 I owned and Honda CB 250 which was a much better bike. Moving forward to the 21st century in the last 10 years I have owned a Yamaha XV1100 - a big bore cruiser. I used to commute to work a round trip of 200kms on open roads and highways. After putting 100,000kms on it I traded it for a Kawasaki Voyager 1700 - another big bore cruiser which I also used for commuting the same distance. In the last 2 years of work I put close to 70,000kms on it and since retiring 5 years ago have added almost another 20,000kms. Just before I retired I bought for my wife, in the hope that she would get the bug and we could go motorcycling together in retirement, a Piaggio MP3 400 (the slightly smaller version of what is being reviewed here). She took some mandatory pre-rider training and became convinced she wouldn't pass and the instructors made some disparaging comments about the safety of the 400 so after a few months of it not being used I gave it to my son. He soon mastered the bike having never ridden a motorbike before got his permit, rode the Piaggio a few times a decided he wanted a bigger cruiser so it was sold. I will return to the Piaggio in a moment but I need to explain that I also own a Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive - a large bore scooter. I feel I have some credentials in terms of bikes I have ridden and kilometres I have travelled on them. As I explained above I bought the Piaggio 400 for my wife to learn on - the extra wheel and the locking front wheels were the attractions. Big size scooters are made with the option of touring as well as the daily commute. The Yamaha TriCity is great for the city commute or even the pizza delivery but would be impractical for the open road. I felt the 400 would have enough grunt to keep up on the open road (in Australia the national speed limit is 110km/h) and would also serve for a quick trip to the shops. I thought the 400 would not be too heavy (for my wife) whereas the 500 might. when I bought the bike I rode home from the dealer, a trip of 200kms, on a two lane main highway used by many large trucks. I found it had plenty of power to hold its own at the national speed limit and if you didn't keep an eye on the speedo your speed could easily creep up well beyond that. The twist and go transmission made it easy to get off the mark and get going - I'm not overly concerned about 0-60km/h times but I recognise that this is a measure of how quickly you can accelerate out of danger. The brakes worked well a disc on each front wheel and a single disc at the back all operated by levers on the handle bars. The Piaggio was a 2004 model, I can't recall whether it had ABS or not but the Burgman I own does and it makes a difference. I never had a concern about the stability yof the bike at high or low speed. There were times on uneven road surfaces when I was grateful for the extra wheel with its contact patch it meant I didn't have to change direction as I knew the other wheel up front would hold the road. The locking mechanism took a few goes to get used to but in truth I rarely used it except to show off at lights or stop signs. There was plenty of under seat storage but none in the dash areas whereas the Suzuki has 3 storage compartments in the dash. Instrumentation and warning lights covered everything the rider needed including a fuel gauge. One criticism was of the useless sports bike screen - it provided no wind protection at high speed on the open road where you need it. I would recommend the Piaggio MP3 400 but in truth if you were planning to do lots of open road riding the 500 might be a better option if you seek the 3 wheels. I don't think many were sold in Australia. I recall seeing lots of them in Paris both Piaggio and other brands. They were thought to be good for cobbled inner city streets.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I said in the video I also think it's a good scooter (see at 6:46). But many commenters here took me wrong and focused mainly on the fact I said the 3rd wheel doesn't add much. Finally, the reason why I don't recommend it is that it's too expensive in my opinion compared to what it offers and 2-wheelers you can buy for the same price. As you own a Burgman 650, your opinion is valuable and you can compare. Could you please tell us what you think about the following points: MP3's brakes compared to Burgman: much better/slightly better/same/slightly worse/much worse? MP3's stability compared to Burgman: much better/slightly better/same/slightly worse/much worse? MP3's agility compared to Burgman: much better/slightly better/same/slightly worse/much worse? MP3's comfort compared to Burgman: much better/slightly better/same/slightly worse/much worse? MP3's price compared to Burgman: good deal/fair deal/A bit too pricey/bad deal?
@rogersmith5371
@rogersmith5371 6 жыл бұрын
Some of your questions are difficult to answer as the time between owning the 2 scooters is a few years during which I didn't own one. I can say the ABS on the Burgman makes the braking much better. I am a confident rider and as you can see I ride a big cruiser so I don't have an issue with stability but I can see that some people would feel more confident on the MP3 just because it has an extra wheel. I feel confident throwing my Kawasaki around on the open road and although both scooters are suitable for lane splitting I rarely do that because where I live there isn't much traffic. I would say the extra wheel might give some riders a bit more security to lane split but then as you have two wheels up front you need the gaps to be a bit wider. The mirrors fold in on the Suzuki using a switch on the handle bar but it is a long wheel base wide bike. I think the Suzuki might be a bit more comfortable both in the seat and the riding position. There are 3 positions for the rider's feet from calves at right angles to the thighs to stretched out like highway pegs on a cruiser but behind the fairing. I don't recall the MP3 having that feature and the seat was a bit harder. Regarding price a new Suzuki Burgman 650 AN Executive is $14490 AUD ride away (2017 plate). The Piaggio MP3s are no longer sold in Australia - the closet you can get to the 400 or 500 is the Your Urban 300 which I think is slightly wider at the front and can be ridden in some states on a car licence whereas the 400 and 500 where the distance between the front wheels was narrower required a motorcycle licence and pre-learner training. The Your Urban 300 is $10450 AUD ride away. In terms of value for money I would say the Burgman is a better option because it is larger and more suited to the dual purpose of open road touring as well as city riding. Bikes in Australia are taxed for registration - to be able to ride them on the roads according to engine size so the 650 would cost more each year to register than the 300 - the difference would probably be several hundred dollars. I hope that provides more information for potential buyers. I love riding all my toys and probably most bikes but I can't come at riding sports bikes - the are uncomfortable after only a short ride and I don't like the look of them. Thanks for reading and responding to my comments.

Perspective from the U.S. where Piaggio just barely survives within the more popular realm of Vespa Scooter dealerships. Only 500 cc version available over here, but previous version, we had 250, 400 and 500. I went on a ride with someone who had the previous version of an MP3 500 or could have been 400. Those had 12" front wheels; the new ones have 13" front wheels. He said that design absolutely just chewed up the front wheels; lasting no more than 5,000 miles, and that was a huge complaint and so he was looking for something different so he could keep riding and stay out of the shop for tires. Not sure if the bigger wheel/tire combination helps in that regard, but I'm sure tens-of-thousands of French folks know about how that's worked out.At the time I had a Piaggio BV350 two-wheel scooter. Better scooter and better value than any Vespa model; none of which get that newly-designed 330 cc that's in the Piaggio BV (Beverly for the rest of the world). Mine had 33 hp and 21 peak foot lb torque for what that's worth; mine cost at or about $5,700 MSRP; his was at or about $10,000. A got about 67 mpg in warm weather, and even tough I don't own it today, I still feel like it's one of the best all-around, highway capable scooters on the market in between the very expensive maxi scooters and very limited smaller scooters. I'd choose the BV350 still today over the Honda Forza 300 and Sym 300 and Vespa 300 and Kymco 300 Downtown, with the Downtown being second place due to it's large front fairing giving that Burgman-like weather protection. The MP3 500 rider got around 50-55 mpg though he is a bigger guy than me. He had more built in storage, but I had quite a bit too. I had better overall performance, because my scooter weighed only 395 pounds. Soon after that Honda came out with the CTX700 motorcycle with a 670 parallel twin with 44 peak foot pounds of torque (rated; not at the wheel; more like 41 at the wheel) with an estimated 64 mpg and a small fairing. I love mid-range power as a former diesel car owner and absolutely hate high revving performance, so this was just what I had been waiting for in a ride. I traded the scooter for this great machine in one heartbeat and have never looked back. Now I get 76 mpg commuting on a mid-sized motorcycle with much less prospect of shop time and much greater wear life on tires; standard chain and sprocket as opposed to all that expensive, complicated CVT stuff that I could have been looking at as a highway commuter, commuting a few thousand miles per year. I feel I have the mentality of most scooter riders who ride for practicality + fun, instead of only fun and impressing others, which is why motorcycles come out the way they do in today's market. But some of the newer Honda models are the exception and is why a scooter-minded person can end up with a motorcycle that can have efficiency and service advantages over scooters when engineered for practicality. It's just that we don't see a lot of that in the market. I can think of two other models today, from two other manufacturers; there may be more: Suzuki SV650; BMW GS650. Practical, useful, some value and fun; but absolutely exceptions. BMW F800 GT would also make the list if it weren't so expensive. Great powerful power train with mpg as high as 60.Now a Honda 3-wheeler with the 670 cc parallel twin with engineering that makes stable riding more intuitive than stopping the MP3. That would be the best ride ever and that would make me and my wife riding partners.

Mr Kiddo missed the point of the wheel configuration, it’s a lot about distributing the front contact from 1 wheel to 2. This is called redundancy, and in the world of scooting, that means if you hit an oil slick with 1 wheel, you have another one up front that might have missed it.
@MrKiddoMoto
@MrKiddoMoto 3 жыл бұрын
Wonder what make bikes stable... Contact points is only one of the aspects. Indeed, the MP3 has 2 contact points on the front, but there is also much more weight there, a high center of gravity and less gyroscopic force (which depend of the wheel diameter), because of the small wheels. You should try a Yamaha TMax or a Honda Forza. Trust me, you will immediately feel safer...

ok video, but I think your too quick to judge the stability over 25mph and say that the third wheel is useless. I've got an MP3 & also 2 'regular' scooters. When cornering at 50+ MPH on the MP3 (especially in bad weather) I'm eternally grateful for the 3rd wheel! I've ridden over county roads full of horse manure with out a problem.. filtering is great on the mp3, I find that car drivers actually make space for me - sometimes more out of curiosity than courtesy though! And the brakes? I've always found them astounding, not sure what was wrong with your test model..

Thank you for your customer feedback. I rode it for 48 minutes, and I'm sure it doesn't become better on the 49th or after... 😉 Compared to a light scooter, the MP3 is indeed more stable, but it's also much heavier, less agile and more expensive. Compared to a motorcycle (what I'm used to ride daily), the MP3 feels unstable and has poor brakes. It's obvious. Anyway, as I told in the video, I still think the MP3 is a good scooter, powerful, comfortable and spacious, interesting only for drivers without a motorcycle licence.

Please try a real motorcycle, and then talk... People who have never ridden motorcycles underestimate how much stable they are. Because I'm tired to have under this video comments from unexperienced MP3 riders, I will take the time to explain you. The balance on a 2-wheeler is mainly provided by the gyroscopic force. I ride motorcycles, and as you can see in my other videos, I have absolutely no problem for doing emergency brakes or riding in the rain. It also happened to me to be surprised by gravel on the road, even in a curve, without crashing. Gyroscopic force increases with wheel size and speed. Leaning at high speed feels obviously MUCH safer with a motorcycle than with a MP3. The problem with the MP3 is that it has indeed 3 wheels, but those are two small wheels, so they provide less gyroscopic force. Not the mention the poor grip of scooter tires compared to motorcycle tires. A low center of gravity also contribute to the stability of a 2-wheeler. See for example my test ride of the Yamaha T-Max ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKO3cp-JacSkmsU ). It feels much more stable and safer than the MP3. Can you ride your MP3 handless as I did with the TMax? Certainly not. All of these being said, I still think that the MP3 is a good scooter. It's comfortable, it has a lot of practical features, and it's more powerful than many other scooters. But it's not more stable and safer than a motorcycle, and it's less agile and easy to ride than a small scooter.

MrKiddo sorry but we talking about scooters not motorcycles.....i never mention motorcycles... scooters between 2 and 3 wheels.come on you can't compare scooters with motorcicle... Tmax is a scooter with a different chassis more near a real motorcycle then a normal scooter. I ride in my past a 50cc scooter mbk booster a piaggio runner 180cc a piaggio mp3 250cc a kawasaki rs6n 650cc mt07 700cc and now a mt09 850cc so i think i can talk about it i have my experience and what i mention was in my possession but i drove more scooters and more motorcycles then mentioned. If we talk about tmax(leader on scooters in my opinion) yes mp3 have less stability... and yes even if we talking about a real motorcycle... but if we talking about scooters stability and safety in fast turns even low speeds or a real emergency break. now all habe abs in my past i don't had abs just in mt07 amd mt09 and mp3 save me in a lot of situations of emergency like dogs even children go suddenly in street or stupid cars don't give the right of way.. mp3 is mooore better and safe you tell 2 wheels is the same of 3 wheels no difference at medium speed.and is not true... speaking about the manoeuvrability yes mp3 is heavy and not perfect at very low speed.

I do not agree. When the ground is wet or dirty and you have to brake hard or go through a hole the third wheel is a blessing. I speak knowingly, I have an MP3 400 LT since 2009, 35,000 km, mainly used in Paris, the peripheric and the main roads. This 3rd wheel avoided me several very HOT situations 🔥

I can only presume you have a bike licence and have actually riden other bikes? Over 40 years I've been riding bikes, and, after riding an LT 500 I found it very stable and safe to ride a all speeds.The slow speed to stop locking mechanism is excellent in traffic although I've been told over use can lead to steering notch.On a test track I've riden to 98 mph and at this speed I felt more safe than my Kwaka 400, this I believe would be to the 3rd centrifugal force of the 3rd wheel.I would like to see a geared version of this bike !Perhaps with a bit more riding of the 500 before giving a slight demeaning report would be more accurate? But, as I do not know you I maybe incorrect, if so, I apologise.

If you had taken the time to check my channel, you would have seen than I have ridden 17 different motorcycles and scooters over the last 2 years. I can tell you without a single second of hesitation: the Piaggio MP3 500 is obviously the one which is the least stable and which has the worst brakes. Sorry but I can't believe someone who tells me being an experienced rider if he also says the Piaggio MP3 is stable. It's comfortable, it's spacious, but it's not stable. It's my honest and independent opinion. A few former MP3 owners who now ride motorcycles told me they agree with me. Feel free to watch my review of the Yamaha TMax to see what a stable scooter actually looks like.
@garryermoloff1890

Actually the locking device has nothing to do with the steering notch problem, it has been identified to be caused originally by misinformation sent out by the factory on proper adjustment and tightening of the front steering tube bearings. The problem was the guidelines called for too much torque tightening on the bearing which was corrected but still many shops don't do it properly unless its brought to their attention. The bearing life could actually be extended if the notched area is turned about a quarter turn so its not affecting the steering however its best not to overtighten so as not to have the problem in the first place because of so much of the MP3's tupperware needing to be removed to get to areas of repair and eating up technician time just to get to the problem for repairs. Still, this is an amazing scooter/motorcycle and very fun to ride!

MrKiddo Pay $20. Read the 10 pages brochure, pass your permit (Questions are exactly the same as in the book, no surprises). Now you have your permit. Permits are good for 6 month. With the permit you can ride with a group of riders, or have a license holder seating behind you. Then pass the simple road test. Done. Now you can ride a 1500cc bike if you want. If you are caught riding a motorcycle without a bike license, but have a car license, its a $25 ticket and no points removed. Life is soooooooooo good in America :)

Hi Peter Murray - it's relative - when compared to a big bike, the pre-2014 models have lacklustre brakes (the newer ones are bigger) but compared to most scooters, the MP3 with its three discs is great braking-wise - this review is spot on from a bikers perspective- I used to own a MP3 and will buy one again - pillions find the MP3 much more stable than any Vespa thanks to the third wheel plus when it's icy, rainy or snowy, the MP3 cannot be beat

I wish my French were half as good as your English! About the machine though... You mentioned handling a couple of times and said it's not as agile as a regular bike and is only more stable up to around 40 KPH. I ride a 650cc 2-wheeler but have thought about the biggest of the MP3 range as I think they are cool and I get pain in my left hand from using the clutch a lot in town. Even so, it seems that you would not suggest on of these for me (?) I live in Japan so an MP3 would be an expensive option here, as it is not a Japanese bike. I would have liked to see some 'real' cornering and testing of the handling, but thank you for the review.

You're welcome +staninjapan07! English is much more easy to learn than French... 😉 Yes, there isn't indeed any "real" cornering in the video, because Parisian bikers have to do many miles before reaching some "real" corners 😟 Honestly, I would recommend you rather a 400cc 2-wheeled scooter: no clutch neither, but they are much cheaper, faster, and nimbler.

I'm serious considering this one, because it rains a lot in my home town (Lisbon). Do you think it's safer than a 2 wheeler in the rain? If you don't care about motorcycling and just want something convenient for commuting in the city, the Piaggio MP3 is a great scooter. In all others cases, you will have MUCH more fun with the Suzuki VStrom. Safety-wise, the Piaggio isn't really safer: people who would tell you the opposite don't know a lot about motorcycle dynamics and gyroscopic forces.

I haven't tried, but I don't think so. I said in the video at 00:49 that the owner of this MP3 has crashed once. It actually happened while he was riding at 30 kph in a roundabout in wet condition. Both front wheels skidded! The problem is that the MP3 has 3 wheels indeed, but they are narrow and have bad tires which don't provide a good grip, while the bike is very heavy. The small scooters (50cc or 125cc) also have bad tires, but they're light. The other big scooters (TMax, Burgman, etc.) and motorcycles have wide tires offering a good grip. All in all, the MP3 is a good choice if you want something more powerful than a 125cc without getting a motorcycle licence. But it's not safer than a 2-wheeler IMO...

Absolutely. 0-100 kph in 8 seconds, 160 kph top speed. The MP3 has a 500cc engine but it's also VERY heavy, so it can't go faster than a 250cc bike which weighs 100 kg less...

When you are used to ride a real motorcycle on daily basis, and then try this MP3, the difference is really obvious... The MP3 feels much less stable.

Thank you for this comment, Glen Pierce. Knowing that RJ's Nuda have been stolen has made me very sad. Through RJ's videos, all his subscribers were riding this bike with him. I have the same feeling that I would have if my own bike was stolen. I hope that it will be found in good condition and that the thief will be punished...

Bonsoir Mr Kiddo, I've seen a lot of these in France and just can't get my head round why someone would buy one. They seem very unstable and a bit too wide to move in and out through heavy traffic. Anyway you're a braver man than me to test-drive one! I like the Tchaikovsky at the end, it's a shame it's about the defeat of Napoleon in Russia! A bientot.
@MrKiddoMoto
@MrKiddoMoto 9 жыл бұрын
Bonsoir Glen Pierce ! It's a solution for the cars drivers who want to move through the traffic with something more agile than a car and more powerful than a 125cc. But it has indeed no real interest for someone who has a motorcycle licence. Glad you've liked the ending. Even if Tchaikovsky's 1812 celebrates Napoleon's defeat, it's an honour to know that a victory against the French deserves such an awesome celebration music ;)

I like Napoleon, a very interesting man. I've been to Corsica, his birthplace 5 times. I even looked into buying a house on the south of the island, but it's too expensive for me at the present. One day perhaps I'll live in France again, before I get too old! A bientot.

Its top speed is 130 kph. On the highway, you will need to be permanently at the top speed, or close to it. I'm afraid it would be boring and not comfortable for long trip... But you can travel with it from France to Italy on strade statali. That would be much more interesting ;)

@MrKiddoMoto
@MrKiddoMoto 9 жыл бұрын

+MrKiddo Yeah, that was a world-wide marketing decision by Vespa HQ, to get car drivers to buy. Oddly enough, in Canada, prior to 2000{IIRC} scooters had to have a right side brake pedal, to make them compatible with manual motorcycles, whereas in other markets, having both brake controls on the handlebars was acceptable. Then somewhere along the way Transport Canada said it was OK to do it Euro/Asian style, to conform to world standards, but MP3s in Canada now have that pedal, rather than alter the manufacturing for one market [one that has poor dealership/distribution structure]. Other automatics/CVTs, like the Ridely [sp?] stayed with the standard front brake-right lever...rear brake-right pedal in their 750cc bikes and no clutch lever on the left. Again, you're right about one thing, our short riding season in most parts makes the 400cc class a better bargain! I do miss my old 69 Honda 450 scrambler from way back{well, a CB450 with the high pipes, instead of the road scrapers of stock} , way more fun than the larger machines I bought later in life.....

@MrKiddoMoto
@MrKiddoMoto 9 жыл бұрын
@Kaouet
@Kaouet 9 жыл бұрын
