Second start of my new '93 IDIT motor I just picked up for $350 from a local wrecking yard(they even pulled it for me!)
I never even turned it over, figuring that at worst, the turbo kit would more than cover what I paid for the whole thing.
Turns out... It's not half bad!
You can see some white smoke on revving; that's retarded timing. IP and injectors are worn, probably haven't been done in the last 100-200K, but the engine itself is pretty decent.
This is also the first engine I've had with a working glow plug system out of the truck. Usually, things need a full glow plug kit etc.
I also didn't know before making this video that everything was on the same circuit, and that you just needed the one wire to power everything you need for the motor. I figured it needed a separate line for the glow plug controller key-on, but apparently not.
Sorry for the potato video quality; my friend was videoing it for me and it doesn't seem to have focused right. Ah well, live and learn.
Now, I just need to figure out what to do with it:
1. I can install it as-is in my tan '88(with blown motor)
2. I can remove the turbo, install it in the tan '88, for use with the existing Banks/S360 kit.
3. I can install it as-is in my blue '88 non-turbo truck, and pull that (good shape) motor and use that under the Banks/S360 kit.
4. I could swap the entire thing as-is into my '93(currently factory turbo with '88 non-turbo motor), which would net me a similar setup, but one without nearly-blown head gaskets(I would then take that '88 motor and re-seal it, which has to happen sooner or later anyway).
5. I could sell it for $1K or so to someone else that needs a complete running setup, and build one of my other motors for the tan '88.
edit for future watchers:
This motor ended up lock stock and barrel in my red '93 after the motor that came in that truck's headgaskets finally gave up after being overheated the year prior. This motor runs pretty nicely, has a lifter tick, but just keeps on going.

Just an update. This motor is currently going in Big Red, my '93 Factory Turbo truck. The '88 motor in it finally blew a head gasket, and instead of pulling it and replacing the gasket, I pulled it and dropped this one in as of today. The '88 motor is getting new gaskets, probably my set of headstuds, getting checked out for a minor tick and more than likely going in my tan '88.

I never get sick off watching your videos. Cant wait to see what you do with the motor. Im currently working on a turbo "kit" for my idi. But budget is low but ill get there eventually. Keep up the awesome videos.

She's currently in my daily driver, Big Red, my '93, after I blew a head gasket(I had minor leakage for a full year beforehand).

K Robb I need a solution. I got one in my dads old truck ('93 non turbo) I'm gathering info, cash, and parts to get running. I need a straightforward, simple, solution to a strong starter. Is a gear reduction starter a good idea? Also can you give me your recommendations on the brand of rebuilt/re-manned injectors?

Honestly, either style starter works just fine. They are both gear reduction units - the Mitsubishi and Nippondenso styles. I haven't seen any difference in cranking speed between them, either. The big difference comes between a clean and new starter vs a worn out one with no brushes left. I've heard Powermaster starters are good; personally, I've just grabbed every used starter I can get my hands on and rebuild them as they need it - Generally just clean it up, re-grease it, new brushes and they work again. Injectors.. You have three basic vendors. R&D IDI Performance, Conestoga Diesel, and a user who goes by 'typ4' on the Oilburners forum. These guys all sell quality injectors, rebuilt with new nozzles. The nozzle(pintle and seat) is the wear part, and that's hard to come by, so most 'rebuilt' vendors don't, they just use random ones out of old injectors. I know that the R&D and Typ4 nozzles are good; I've been quite happy with how consistent the pop pressures have stayed as they wear. Conestoga should be really good, but are also more expensive.
