Heat Barrier, heat control, we all need to control the temperature in our muscle cars. Heat is one thing that can sap the fun out of a drive. What works to control the cabin temperatures? We test jute carpet backing for heat control. We test Tru-Max to see how it controls heat. We Test Frost King to see how it controls high temps. Jeff and Cam also test Lizard Skin for temperature control.

I used Peel n Seal on my '68 Mustang. It's very affordable and does an awesome job blocking out the heat. You can find it at most home improvement stores, I found mine at Lowe's. I also taped up the seams with the same tape that you used in your video. I've had it on my car for about 9 years and it's held up perfectly.

Sorry Andy but it's been so long I don't remember, I'm guessing maybe 10 rolls and two rolls of tape. I do remember I covered just about everything, the wheel wells, inner rockers, firewall as high as I could get it, the panel behind the rear seat. I didn't do the roof for fear the sun would cause it to fall. Wear gloves when molding it into the floor pan or you'll get blisters. On a summer day I couldn't sit at a stop light without sitting in a pool of sweat, now the car is a pleasure to drive. Make sure you tape up the seams with foil tape (type used to seal hvac ducts). Cost wise, it's about 1/4 what Dynamat is. Although it's not as thick .045 vs .067. I doubled up on the transmission hump and driveshaft tunnel just to be safe.

The frost king is more for sound then it is heat. I use it in my Bronco and the Highway noise is much better and I'm more relaxed at the end of a trip then when I wasn't using it.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 6 жыл бұрын
We can see that. However, most folks are using it on headliners as heat control. That is why we tested it as such. BUT...that bring up an idea for a sound control video =)

I used Peel n Seal on the roof of my son's 1992 Mustang coupe, it lowered the heat, but, more importantly, it reduced oil canning of the roof.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. Peel and Seal will cut temps a little but more importantly (since the headliner has fiberglass heat control built in) stops the oil can sounds.

1st of all. Need constant temperature. I mean 2 guys 4 hands. Shouldn't be a problem. Im say jute with foil 1 side. Then a 2nd layer. If not just the hotter spots. Or frost king then jute then carpet. On the head liner just spray top of liner with glue and cover with regular heavy duty aluminum foil

im a little late, but my thinking is , you have to cut holes in it for seats wires ect. so water is going to get into the fabric. now you have the water sealed off on top and below and it cant get anywhere. atleast in the other ones it can evaporate and leave
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 жыл бұрын
There is some logic to your way of looking at it. We will typically lay the wires on top of the underlayment and under the carpet and use the duct tape to hold them in place.
@makeitabud89

AutoRestoMod Car Restoration Modification sounds like we need a test to see how different sound deadners works with water. Like a few bare pieces of metal and pour some water on then and let it sit for few weeks. That same test just keeping the carpet damp.

Wish I watched this before I installed Frost King on the floor of my 67 Mustang. Out of curiosity, did you happen to test Frost King insulation with the jute on? I plan on leaving the jute on my Mass-Back carpeting.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 жыл бұрын
The foil of the frost king will help slow the heat front, as will the stock jute. We didn't test it though.
@sasquatchmovies
@sasquatchmovies 4 жыл бұрын
I ended up driving my Mustang with no carpet and just the Frost King. When I placed my hand under the Frost King, it was significantly warmer than above it. Based on this, I concluded that it definitely helps. But as Autorestomod proved, there are better solutions. I put everything back together, and cabin is cooler. As an added bonus, most road noise has been eliminated on the highway. In addition to a single layer of Frost King, I added Mass back carpeting with jute, factory style underlayment, and new firewall padding. Everything fit appropriately.

You would want somewhere that rejects the heat not dissipate the heat like a ceramic heat paint and it would be less thick and no interfere to much with fit
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 6 ай бұрын
Almost every product even those that are ceramic based don't reject the heat they slow it's movement through the metal. At least that's my experience with it.

At 16:20 you use Frost King with tape toward the flame. AL (aluminum) deflects the heat so why not tape it to the under body so the heat hits the AL and reflects away from the floorboard, then test how much heat makes it through to your feet..
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 жыл бұрын
Well, mostly because of road wear. We try and do practicals...ways that you would use it on a daily basis. A shield would be very effective though

Which product do you recommend for the cargo area of a cargo van that would be converted to a campervan? How many layers of product would you suggest for this application? Is there an R-Value for this product? Does your recommended product off-gas toxic fumes?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on if you are flooring the van or just putting carpet back down. Two layers would probably do you right. All you are trying to do is slow down the heat...or cold in the case of a cargo van.

@codywinter4818 3 жыл бұрын
I've also been trying to decide whether or not to use Frost King in my van (for the ceiling and possibly walls as a first layer behind XPS), but I can't seem to find any information about whether or not it off-gases anything. Did you ever find that answer or what did you end up doing?
@codywinter4818
@codywinter4818 3 жыл бұрын
The other thing I found that I like is this smart sheild stuff on Amazon, you can get a ton of it for only $50 but its not self adhesive so I'd have to figure out how to adhere it to the ceiling, which needs to fit tightly so moisture doesn't get behind it.

Hope this isn't a dumb question. I want to insulate my minivan against heat AND cold. I'm assuming this insulation product combinations work in both extremes? I may be spending some time in Minot, North Dakota in the near future...
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you did to have to go to Minot but the product would. However, the TruMax is no longer available. You will have to use the UltraTouch from Bonded Logic, most home improvement stores carry it. Your biggest problem will be your windows in controlling your heat envelope. A lot of the van guys I see on here make window shields and barriers between the sleeping area and the cab of the van too.

@@AutoRestoMod thank you. I am making window coverings with reflectix and fabric with jute sandwiched between. I'm using my van as a camper to visit family. I was adopted and my family found me in October of last year. My house burned down in September and I worked from home. I lost everything, so nothing is tying me down. Might as well meet my family.
