taking this test before 2 days of my exam, with a nervous mindset that my preparation is not good enough, that my vocabulary is not sufficiently deep! I was clearly LACKING CONFIDENCE!!! But after scoring 24/30 in this test and a last minute inspirational line of "you should be proud of yourself" from you, now I know I can snatch away some kind of moderate score from the test center ! Thank you GREG Mat!

6 months ago I knew none of those words except for misanthrope and homogeneous, I memorized 1500 words in 6 months (1000 more to go) and now I scored 27! Most of the online resources underestimate non-native speakers' English learning capabilities but we indeed can do it, too! 😊 What was that feeling called in GRE? jubilant / ebullient ? 😂

I will come and take a test everyday! The WAs were cerebral, daunting, spendthrift, amorphous. puerile was easy for me with Latin knowledge puer “boy”. spendthrift was really misleading, I never thought it could mean prodigal/extravagant/profligate/squander.

Got 29/30 what stumped me was the Amorphous question. I did not know the meaning of pragmatic, i had the urge to google but I didnt do it as you had said in the video its best to avoid dictionaries or just searching the meaning as its cheating. When i thought about the answer I realised that vague suit it because amorhpous means that it changes a lot or is not constant and the word vague fit the meaning more

Hey! I got an idea how to remember "puerile". It starts with "pu". "Puberty" also starts with "Pu". Anything which ends with "ile" generate connotes an actionable thing, e.g., "fertile" means - a land on which you can grow crops easily. Similarly, pu**ile may be remembered as something which can do something which teenagers going through puberty can do - which stereotypically suggests a lot of childish things. I hope that helps :)

19/30... I have been learning English since I was like 6. These words are crazy... I was trying to be logical, trying to see the origins of the words through. Sometimes they played against me. How in earth "prodigal" has almost a complete different meaning and context than "prodigy" is beyond me. I really think it may help people to study words by checking out their origins alongside. Lastly: I found the correct meaning of "insipid" by deciphering it as "something 'in'hibits being 'sip'pable", i.e. something that cannot be drunk, dry. I'm not native or anything, so this can be completely inaccurate, and just a coincidence.

The best answer for flouted is 'ignore.' MW has "to treat with contemptuous disregard." "Disregard", of course, means 'ignore.' While 'ignore' may not convey the full force, it is surely closer than the vague 'go against.' You have that one wrong.
@dragonscale333
@dragonscale333 4 жыл бұрын
When you ignore something, it means that you treat it as if it's not there. There's no context as to the emotions involved. Disregard can mean ignore, but it can also mean to slight or to disrespect. Hence the "contemptuous" part of the MW definition. When you dislike something so strongly that you flout it, you aren't ignoring it - you're actively going against it. That's why he says that "ignore" isn't a bad answer. "Flout" could mean ignore - but "go against" is a word that better captures the full nuances of "flout".

Hey! It's interesting that I could remember the meaning for "insipid" without learning it by heart. Here's how I did it: In-sip-id. "In" as a prefix to anything usually negates the meaning of the word, e.g., inconvenience (meaning, the lack of convenience). "Sip" essentially means - to take a small amount of liquid in your mouth. Now, imagine you want to drink a very bitter medicine. You don't imagine something very pleasant, do you? Which means you don't want to really "sip" it - but you have to anyway. Just like studying for your mid-sems. So, I put "In" in front of "sip" and it now looks like something you don't want to/cannot sip. Which might be because it is very boring. I know it sounds very illogical but it kinda helped me. I hope that helps :)

Yeah. I also thought of the same. Like a didactic novel is an interactive one which teaches us as we go along it.

How the meaning of 'didactic (instructive)' could be the same as "condescending (patronizing)'?

Didactic has a negative connotation. You act like a didactic teacher but you are not. Maybe you just belong to the category of dilettantes. That's why it means you looking down on others.

It doesn't have to have a negative connotation. That is one possible entry. MW also has the simply entry (which is first) 'designed or intended to teach.'
