The Spectral is Canyon's aggressive long-travel party bike. Sitting pretty between the 130mm travel Neuron trail bike and the 160mm travel Strive enduro race machine, the Spectral differs from those two bikes in that it's built around 27.5in wheels. That puts it more inline with the likes of the Trek Remedy, Santa Cruz Bronson, Norco Sight, and Specialized Stumpjumper EVO.
The Spectral was completely overhauled for 2018 with a new frame, a new suspension platform, and lots of little tech highlights that we covered in our launch story here. For 2019, the Spectral frame carries over, but it's been pumped up with a bigger fork and a bigger stroke shock to increase travel to 160mm on the front, and 150mm out back. A 10mm increase in travel (over the previous bike's 150/140mm combo) doesn't sound like a whole lot, but after two months with the Spectral AL 6.0, we can confidently state that this bike's character has actually changed quite a bit.

I got one! After my 2004, back then top of the line, Specialized S-works Enduro was stolen I got the AL6.0. There is no comparison. 15 years of technology progress is clearly evident. It is definitely a hooligan’s bike and it will also eat up any terrain roughness.

Awesome long term review. I have a 2019 Spectral AL 6.0 in stealth black. Absolutely love the bike. I’m sort of a new rider. It saves me when I’m stupid. Also supports me when I want to be a hoon. I love ripping down hills and popping off everything. I’m super happy with my decision. I did have an issue with a linkage bolt backing out. Canyon customer service was awesome and sent all new parts and supported me during the install to make sure all was good. So far no issues. I ride 3-4 times a week and I tend to lean towards the bruiser side of riding. Can’t beat this bike for the price.

Yes I think they noticed that and undid some of it. The new 29er spectral for some reason has less travel on some models, that cable channel downtime protector is gone, only carbon frames etc. I would have bought it immediately with an alloy frame and deore/slx but 4 grand was too much.

Hey Will. Thanks for a great review 😀 I have the excact same bike and have had it since August, and are so pleased with it, and find your review fitting, especially the spec you get for your cash. I also own a 2016 scott Genius plus, that i have had for 4 years, 140 / 130 travel. Long story short, i made a move from flat Denmark (highest point 187 meters) to Austria and the alps, i needed a bike with more pop and travel, to run much more aggressive trails and bikeparks, without emptying my wallet. Been riding Leogang, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Wagrain and tons of freeride trails with the bike, it is just good value for money, and it is really a bandit and takes a good beating. This bike comes recomended, i only needed few adjustments to make this bike run, suspension tweeks, its just a blast to ride. Looking forward to more reviews from you 👌👍

I've owned this bike for a few months and there is nothing to add here. It's all spot on, right down to the uncomfy saddle, the flimsy dropper post lever and the rear tire not being up to game for this bike. I am fine with how it climbs, mind you I've come from a MK1 Jeffsy 29 AL which has an even slacker seat tube angle.. all in all however these bikes definitely cater towards the same people who put going downhill over going uphill and like a poppy, playful bike. Guys, this right now is a good time for affordable trailbike machinery. Good review @Flow Mountain Bike.

I purchased this bike about a month ago and have done several rides on it. I mainly do trails/singletracking with climbs and downhill sections. I am really enjoying this bike coming from a Cannondale Hardtail. I would highly recommend (as stated in the video) to replace the front tire and get rid of the maxx grip tire (unless all you do is bike parks/downhill rides). I also felt that when riding it the bike felt slow on the climbs and on flat/up/down trails with the Maxx Grip. I replaced the tire with a Maxx Terra DHRII 2.4 120TPI EXO+ and setup the tires tubeless. Wow did it really wake up this bike. Much Much Better Now!! Climbs better than my HT. Other than going tubeless and replacing the front tire, the bike is great and highly recommend.

Great and complete review of a bike! That is how it’s done! And I have one since December and it is really a fantastic bike. Like you said, I have two little complaints: the sticky rubber up front (put the maxx terra up front and an aggressor on the back - will do the first run today - and the not so comfortable saddle. It’s is a hell of a bike! And looks awesome on that raw color!

Top review, Will. Very thorough without being dull or geeky. And refreshing to not do the usual knocking of a bike with conservative reach measurement (looking at you, nearly ever other bike reviewer). I have a 2018 Giant Trance with similar geo, and my home trails are twisty and tight. I actually prefer the shorter reach as like you say about the Canyon, it makes a nimble ride and isn’t a fight to thread it through the turns. Actually, the Giant replaced the older Spectral, as the head tube/stack was very high and I couldn’t get comfy. Look forward to more reviews!

Great review. I appreciate the points on adjusting the suspension. I have the `19 CF 7.0 Spectral and am surprised how much I love riding this bike. What a pleasant difference riding 27.5" instead of 29" wheels transforming the bike into a nimble thrill ride! I did switch out the grips for Ergon GA3s which improved comfort and grip when wet/sweaty. Came with tubeless stems so I converted to tubeless out of the box. I've found climbing on the Spectral to be exceptional... grippy, smooth and efficient. Perhaps I need to try other bikes to understand your concerns? In full agreement that this thing is made to have a blast on the trail!
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
Yo Ben, thanks very much, and glad you enjoyed the review! Sounds like you've got your Spectral CF dialled in nicely - those GA3s are really nice grips hey? As for climbing on the Spectral, it isn't terrible - it'll go uphill steadily enough, and you're right about the rear-wheel traction thanks to the active suspension design. There was a huge difference in climbing speed once I changed the tyre setup, since that Maxx Grip compound on the front tyre is incredibly sluggish. And compared to other trail bikes within this travel bracket, the slack seat tube on the Spectral is pretty noticeable - especially alongside something like a Yeti SB140 or an Evil Offering - both of which have 77-degree seat tube angles. Even the Santa Cruz Bronson has a 75.3-degree STA, and the Trek Remedy is 74.7-degrees. That makes a big difference on the steep stuff, where you want to be as far over the BB as possible. To help in that department, I found the Spectral was a lot better on the climbs with 25-percent sag on the rear shock, and also making use of the blue compression switch. Once I did that, and changed the tyres, it was a lot more efficient, while still being a barrel-load of laughs to bomb downhill on! [Wil]

I've got the exact same bike as in the video. I absolutely love it. Black diamonds all day. It eats rock gardens for lunch. Although i would disagree with the reviewer, in its climbing abilities. At this travel length 160/150, i dont think ive ridden a better climber. Best bang for the buck on the market.

So I am looking at the spectral and I was thinking that the amount of travel would be cumbersome on the climbs and also I ride my bike almost everyday doing jumps practicing wheelies and bunny hops and just generally ridding around and jobbing I like fun poppy playful bikes the other bike I was looking at was 130/150so I was thinking short in the back so good for climbing and a little more in the front for heavy hit Thank you for helping if you could give me some advice
@ob08
@ob08 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ben_McBride in my opinion it climbs really well, you can also pretty much lock out the suspension. The rear is very supportive, yet supple, and she likes air time. Ive heard it described as a "party" and "hooligan" bike, if that gives you an idea. I regularly climb 1000+ feet on rides, and i have no complaints. I still insist it offers the best bang for the buck on the market.

I think the same this bike climbs very well.. I have ridden other bikes and I think this bike is the best climber in this category.... I just set up the rear shock to 25 % sag and if I’m not doing downhill I keep it in the middle or trail set up... but I have done fully Iowans still climbs perfectly.

Hi Ob08 ! I'm glad I scrolled down to your reply and of some other users as well regarding Spectral's climbing abilities. It is my only and biggest concern. when I go out for a ride with friends we have to go up for about 5-10 km till we reach the top and get in the trails. Occasionally steep dirt roads but not so often. Usually of gradual gradient. We go with a steady pace. Should I overcome my second thoughts and get this bike? will it do the job properly for those 5-10 km upwards without me having to push really hard?

Own him in black in XL. Seatpost screw was unscrewing until I put it on loctight. Rear axle was unscrewing until I tightened it properly. Almost impossible to put a rear mudguard to keep the sand and dirt away from the shock. But that's nothing compared to the value - what you're getting for that price. 10/10 would buy again!

@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the review Patrick! No issues with the BB creaking on our test bike, though to be fair we've only had it for a couple of months. In general though, if there's a problem with the tolerances of the frame's bottom bracket shell, you'll find out about it pretty early on. It doesn't matter how good the BB is - if the frame hasn't been manufactured properly, it'll have movement that will result in creaking. In our case, there's been zero noise from our Spectral AL test bike. If the creaking happens further down the line though, it might be more to do with the actual bottom bracket itself - say due to contamination that causes the bearings to feel rough, which can turn into creaks and squeaks. From personal experience, I've ridden quite a few of the new SRAM DUB bottom brackets over the past 18 months, and they've all been smooth and creak-free. [Wil]

Hi . First of all thanks a lot for your in-depth review. You cover everything,however you also made me have serious second thoughts about purchasing the Spectral AL 6.0. And that has to do with going uphill. I come from Greece where we don;t have any organised parks and have to go with what nature offers. For me that means that I have to go and park my car somewhere and then start going uphill for about 5-10 km. I have to mention that me and my friends don't really care about going fast uphill. We just keep a steady pace to get there and then start the fun part - which is the reason why I really like this bike. Do you think that I should be really worried about that? Will this bike make my life miserable going upwards to a level that will regret choosing it? I'm a "week-end warrior" so I want to make a choice that would really make me happy for the limited time I have to ride trails. To be honest after months a reading articles, videos etc I was convinced that I have to go with the Spectral till I saw your review and read also an article stating the same issue. But for the use I would like to do should this REALLY WORRY me??? Thanks in advance for your reply!!! PS. I'm looking for the 2020 model.

This vs. Neuron AL 7.0? Am I correct in assuming the Specral is better for descending while the Neuron is more of a allrounder?
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
For sure - the Neuron is more of an all-round trail bike, whereas the Spectral is biased more towards descending. As a result, it has more suspension, heavier duty components, and geometry that is more stable on the descents. If you're hitting bigger jumps and riding black diamond trails, it's the one to go for out of the two. In comparison, the Neuron is lighter, more efficient, and more comfortable for all-round riding and climbing. Hope that helps! [Wil]

@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question Jean-Pierre, though I'd say that the Trance 29 and the Spectral are two very different bikes. For a start, the Spectral has a load more suspension travel (160/150mm vs 130/115mm). It's also got smaller 27.5in wheels, stickier 2.5in wide tyres, and bigger brake rotors. All-in, that makes it a more downhill-hungry bike that's capable of some properly rough riding. The Trance 29 is a cracking bike, and supremely capable for a bike with just 115mm of rear travel, but it isn't an enduro bike. You'll get away with a lot, and the geometry helps in that regard, but you do start to notice the lower travel when you're really hammering it into bigger hits and rock gardens. In some ways the Spectral is more comparable to a Giant Trance, or even the new Giant Reign 29. Hope that helps! [Wil]

I am an older rider who is a bit of a wanna be. I just can't really ride like I want to yet even though I have been riding for about 25 yrs. I just didn't grow up with BMX or anything like that. My question is..I bought both the Strive and Neuron 2019 at the end of the season and had to send them both back..I hated to do it..I loved them both but just could not climb with them. Live in Colorado and at times really need to get up the mountains. My "style" of riding is just try to improve every time I go downhill and pray. I want to be able to throw the bike around a little bit and still have it stable enough to get me down the mountain without killing myself. Love MTB and watch it alot on videos. What Canyon product is right for me?? Or what other bike??

In need of help!! I'm between the Spectral AL 6.0 and Strive CF 6.0 as they're both similar in price at the moment. Which would you judge as a better climber? Also, since I've never ridden a 29, would the strive compromise me significantly on tight corners and playful jumps? Thanks.
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
Yo Isahi! Without doubt the Strive CF is the better climber out of the two. It has a steeper seat tube angle, but it also has the Shapeshifter system. This gives you a short-travel mode for climbing, which provides a firmer pedalling platform, while also steepening the seat angle further to get your weight forward. The 29in wheels will take a while to get used to if you've not ridden them before, and the Strive will need a more exaggerated riding style to weave it through twistier singletrack. The Spectral is good fun, and a really playful bike through the corners and on the descents, but I think the Strive is a more balanced all-rounder with greater high-speed potential. Hope that helps, but just shout out if you've got any other questions mate! [Wil]

I recently bought a 2019 Remedy 7 and I love it! I've never ridden the Spectral before so I can't compare the riding difference but they are very similar in spec. Personally I'm not a fan of the colour or the welds of the AL6.0 frame but that's just me. I've never had a problem with the Remedy, lots of travel when you need it, a decent climber as well. Its definitely a hoonigans bike like the spectral, loves a jump or two.

So overall, this is a better bike than the Fuel EX 8?
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, the Spectral is more comparable to the Trek Remedy, which is also a 160/150mm travel bike with 27.5in wheels. Both the Spectral and Remedy are designed to be big hitting aggro trail bikes that can dabble in some enduro racing too. In direct comparison, the Remedy has a slightly steeper seat angle and a slightly slacker head angle. It also comes with wider 2.6in tyres, and it's built around the RE:aktiv shock damper, which offers a more efficient pedalling platform via the 3-position compression switch. It's definitely a better climbing bike, and in my experience, a better all-rounder compared to the Spectral. As for the Fuel EX, the new 2020 model is a 140/130mm travel 29er trail bike. With the new frame and geometry, it's more capable than the previous version, and that blurs the lines a little between the Fuel EX, Remedy and Slash. We've currently got a Fuel EX 9.8 on test, and so far it's been an absolute ripping bike to ride! Check it out here if you fancy; flowmountainbike.com/post-all/first-look-2020-trek-fuel-ex-9-8-review/ Hope that helps, but just shout out if you've got any other questions mate! [Wil]

Debating to buy this one of the 5.0 and save a couple of quid. I cant see any major differences between them, any advice? Thanks
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
For sure Adam! The Spectral 5.0 looks very similar, so it's hard to spot the differences between that and the 6.0. Here are the main upgrades you get on the Spectral 6.0; - Fox Float DPX2 piggyback shock (vs Fox Float DPS shock) - SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain w/10-50t cassette (vs NX Eagle drivetrain w/11-50t cassette) - SRAM Guide R brakes (vs Guide T brakes) - DT Swiss M1900 wheels (vs Sun Ringle Duroc wheels) The DPX2 shock is a definite performance-enhancer for the Spectral AL 6.0, particularly if you're riding high-speed gravity trails. It's got terrific bump response, and keeps the back end glued to the trail. The Float DPS shock is still good though, and will feel a bit poppier and more lively in comparison, with a little less high-speed control. The DT Swiss wheels definitely come recommended - they were solid all throughout testing. The Guide R brakes also get nicer levers than the Guide T brakes with a better feel and also with tool-free adjustable reach. As for the drivetrain, the GX Eagle stuff is a little slicker than NX Eagle, and as well as having a wider gear range (500% vs 454%) the 10-50t cassette is a helluva lot lighter than the NX Eagle 11-50t cassette. Hope that helps Adam! [Wil]

@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Matti! Yup, for 2020 the Canyon AL 6.0 goes to a Shimano SLX groupset, which includes a 1x12 drivetrain and the new 4-piston brakes. Comparing like for like, I prefer the SLX shift quality over the SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain. The cassette is smoother, quieter and it shifts under load better too. As for the braking, the SLX 4-piston stoppers are brilliant, with solid power and usable modulation. The Guide R brakes on the 2019 Spectral AL 6.0 were pretty good throughout testing, but they did need a bit of attention to keep them feeling solid. I've been spending a fair bit of time on the new SLX groupset, which I'm comparing directly with SRAM GX Eagle. The results will be up on flowmountainbike.com soon, so keep an eye on the website for that one! Hope that helps, but just shout out if you've got any other questions mate! [Wil]

Chris Taco i dont think the cf 7.0 components are better. The Fox DPX2 has more adjustments compared to the super deluxe select + Suspension. I would also go with the Fox 36 Rhythm because of the better Performance than the Pike select. The Guide R breaks are Not That good like u may suppose. I dont know if it is worth spending 400€ more for the Carbon Frame. Why do u think Carbon will be the better Choice? Because of the 600g less in weight?

Dies&Das the brakes aren’t a whole lot better but they are better for sure. And I they spec all the trims except the top end with only rock shox for 2020. Plus you get sram GX instead of the cheaper NX. Plus a carbon frame is whole lot better for stiffness and lighter. Also the wheels are lighter making the bike overall much lighter. I’d spend the extra. Well worth it.

Chris Taco the Rock Shox suspension on the cf 7.0 doenst have a lockout. The AL 6.0 doesnt come with NX! It comes with Shimano SLX. The Fox Float DPX2 on the AL 6.0 does have more adjustment (Open/pedal/lock)...in my opinion its the better one. But you are right, the Carbon Frame is a cool and a better looking Frame, but i think the best bargain is the AL 6.0 :)
