As a person with some hearing disability, finding out Adam has hearing issues was, personally, an emotional surprise for me. His super positive attitude made it a hugely positive one. Happy new year all, happy new year Adam.

My 19 year old son was diagnosed as 85% deaf at age 7. This was a late assessment, and whilst it wasn't a perfect sequence of events, his hearing aides are almost magical in the impact has had on his life. In Australia (trivia ahead) John Howard (Prime Minister for a while) was mostly deaf and set-up/funded Hearing Australia in such a way that my son (and I) didn't have to worry about money when it pertains to hearing loss. Everything is covered by a laughable $37 yearly subscription (that they don't even chase if you don't pay). Adam ... your public advocacy for hearing loss is very important and appreciated by parents all over the world (I'm in Tasmania BTW). Cheers ... happy new year.

I've been an optician for close to 20 years, and your statement about hearing aids being something that will dramatically make your life better echoes so strongly with me. I work with pediatric optometry and pediatric ophthalmology, so I get to work with kids as young as 5-6 mos. A lot of times, their parents will have a stigma or a preconception of glasses as "nerdy" or "uncool" or whatever. I ask them every time this question: "What if I could offer you a device that will automatically make your life better and easier? And that it will work right now? I can make your life (or your child's life) better. Right now. Today." When viewed from that lens (pun definitely intended), their parents usually wake up and get their kid's the glasses they need. Makes my heart smile when the kids get their glasses too (we've all seen the videos...I get to see that daily).

Similar situation here.... I was so self-conscious when I started using a white cane in my late 30's. I've been legally blind since birth and usually I can see to get around without it, but with only a little bit of central vision in one eye, it makes my life a lot easier to use the cane. I wish I hadn't waited so long and I wish my parents had gotten me proper training on cane travel when I was a kid, but they didn't think I needed it. Falling down at 40 hurts a lot more than it did at 5 or 10, and people are a lot less forgiving of adults who don't see them (without the cane, they think I'm just oblivious/rude). The cane makes getting around at night or in crowded/unfamiliar places so much easier and safer.

Gamer 49 Their eyes cannot be “strengthened” as if they are weak. Their eyesight is poor because of the physical shape of the eye and how light passes through it. Kids need their vision to be corrected because if they don’t their brain will actually never learn to use the eye. It could mean that they will never get good vision. No amount of “strengthening” will do anything to change that.

Thankyou for sharing information about your hearing aids! My father has struggled with not hearing well since he was young due to an accident. He has become so used to it that he finds it annoying to wear hearing aids as it makes things sound 'wrong' and 'too loud'. It become a really frustrating topic for the family as he seems happy to not hear anyone and definitely has memory problems. I think some hearing aids like yours might actually interest him though as he loves the more high tech version of things that he can modify and if he can adjust them alot he might find a good middle ground.

I personally am supposed to have hearing aids, but don't wear them for the same reason. I originally got a pair a few years ago but rarely wear them because I just don't like how things sound with them on. What gets to me though is more the sound of static and any background noise there may be that I couldn't hear before. Granted if I wore them it would likely turn into white noise and i'd learn to ignore it, but even still I don't wear them.

The advances in technology are amazing, a friend of mine was born with 37% hearing loss, his latest set can almost seamlessly interface with his phone and computer. I’ve sat with him in study sessions where he’d have switched to binging youtube videos via his direct audio link and we’d be none the wiser without walking by his laptop.

I'm 21 and I've recently noticed I have trouble understanding people more than I thought. I always feel bad asking people to repeat themselves because I can't hear them the first time without leaning in close or focusing on their mouths for visual cues. I also have heavily relied on closed caption since it's become difficult to focus on what's being said if there's music or noise. When Adam started talking about it, I got a bit misty eyed because I've felt pretty alone about this whole ordeal (especially being kinda young), so I'm glad he was here to share the experience! Hopefully this upcomming year I'll ask my doctor about my options and maybe try to get some help. Thanks for talking about it Adam, it really made me feel less alone.

I'm 27 and while my experience doesn't sound as bad as yours I have noticed very similar things. Part of my issue was ADD which I started getting treated for almost 2 years ago and things improved dramatically. However I do notice a portion of my problems are likely hearing related. I have an audiologist appointment next month. You are not alone and there is no shame in getting help.

Thank you so much for advocating for hearing aids. My son who is now 10, has been wearing cross talk hearing aids for almost two years now. When he was 8 we discovered he was completely deaf in one ear. The cross talk hearing aids allow him to hear from his deaf side and it makes a huge difference. Especially say he's playing a sport or in classroom. They would sit him with his good ear towards the teacher, now he doesn't need special placement or sitting arraignments. So it makes him more typical.

i have had hearing problems since I was 3 and have had many visits to the optician since. My first memory of one of these visits was of the Doctor saying to my mom that i would need regular checkups and ear tubes for the rest of my life. Now 13 years and seven surgeries later On my last visit in September the doctor looked at my ears for a few seconds before turning to me and saying that my ears were fully healed and that I wound never need to see an optician again. Those words have changed my life forever and made me fully realize how much little things like being able to heat base notes and being able to swim were ever you want effect someones life. It also added a greater appreciation for how fast technology is advancing, going from constant checkups for the rest of my life to being able to hear like a normal person for the first time in my life, and recovering from even something as minor as the 2% hearing loss, that was my peak during that time, is a totally transforming experience.

My sister's deaf and cant hear 1% and there are programs in every state where as long as you pay for the ear molds they pay for everything else $35 per side if you need both side and they even do payment plans never met one person who couldn't afford or get hearing aids if you are message me from what ive experienced most people over 20 who get them barely use them they ffind it overwhelming but a kid seems to adjust easier

Update- I started to put together a project and went to ebay to source the amp IC's- only to find there are literally THOUSANDS of options under $100 right from China and some nice rechargable units with charge cradle for $15USD- There is seemingly no point in pursuing the project at all. Of course I ordered some to test for myself though ;) Will see but I think there are plenty of options out there.

dude, if you even think you have hearing loss get it checked and dealt with ASAP! it will not get better on its own. i'm 65, worked in Mills for over 40 years have 15-20% loss I can not here my wife in Walmart most of the time, due to the background noise, and the ringing in my ears. please don't do like I have, do it right for you! THE THINGS YOU WILL MISS OUT ON ARE ENORMOUS but small. like a child's little voice, or laughter.

I'm 32 and It happens o me to, specially when background noise is present, such as music or others talking., then I can barely understand what they're saying.... And this has been happening since I was a kid. When I was in school, it was very difficult for me to hear what teachers were talking when classmates were talking or making any kind of noise. Weird enough, I'm able to hear subtle sounds and very low and very high frequencies in rather normal environments....

As a 37 year who got hearing aids last year, I can vouch for how transformative they are. My hearing wasn't that bad (10-15% loss depending on the ear) but I had trouble having conversations in a crowd and these things fixed it, I can also hear a lot more birds now which is a nice plus.

Thank you for all the times you've been open about having to wear hearing aids and the commentary on the cost. I began losing my hearing two years ago from something that most likely I was born with. Hearing aids have become my lifeline to the world but there's much that needs improvement. Without my insurance they'd be totally out of reach, thank you also for your comments about what it's like when you're not wearing them. The comment about memory and hearing decline was truly an "ah ha!" moment. I and my family have noticed a decline over the past year and while not conclusive. It gives me comfort that I'm not the only one experiencing this. As a college student, I've often wondered what my future is going to be like if I'm already struggling with memory.

I lost the full hearing in one ear when I caught swine flu (6 yrs ago) and was in hospital for 7 months (big thanks to the medical services!!!)... now on the mend and I am constantly missing scraps of conversation. I will take your advice sir and get me one! And this was also I inspired by a phone app where you can plug in headphones and it enhances sound in a similar way... so if you want to see what enhanced sound is like then get that phone app for a taster. It was before mythbusters. And counter to popular belief most people around loud noises don't have hearing issue. Your risk is higher but is still low.

@@TheDevilWAH it makes sense. People around loud noises wear ear protection as standard, whereas just going to a concert seems like nothing. I've noticed that people from UK (myself included) can stand the cold weather in short sleeve shirts and no coat, but people from cold climate countries aren't used to the cold... They always wrap up warm before going outside, even for a moment. If something happens frequently, you prepare, but if something only happens occasionally/rarely, you don't see the need to prepare.

@@dsample sorry what I meant is it's like smoking. Most people who smoke won't end up with smoking related cancer. A fair few will many more than average but still most won't. If you meet some one with hearing loss the chances are it has nothing to do with load noise. (even if they have been exposed to loud noises) most hearing issues are other conditions. It's the most annoying thing when you tell people you are losing your hearing the first thing they say is. "Oh is that because you were exposed to noise" I am just saying is some one says they have hearing loss don't make suggestions why, it can come across quite rude and insensitive. If you really want to know an indivual case just ask. "Do you know what caused your hearing loss?"

The disability aid market as a whole is egregiously overpriced. There truly is a tax on being disabled and it's pretty appalling. Everything costs more money when you have a disability and on top of that people with disabilities tend to earn less than people without them. I think that in the long run, the maker community holds the keys to helping out with this. You see it starting to happen with 3d printed prosthetics and orthotics, but it's also possible that things like Arduino and other open source electronics can revolutionise electronic aids like hearing aids or ways for blind people to interface with the optical world. This is really important to work on and if you have someone with disabilities in your life then ask them if there is anything you could make with your skills to improve their quality of life.

You can buy hearing aid in China. For the price of one in the western world, you can buy 5 or 6 models in China www.made-in-china.com/products-search/hot-china-products/Hearing_Aid.html I wouldn't go for the cheap ones though, but for the models with digital processing.

Have you checked the insulin prices in US? It's the most unelastic market there is, ( economists use it as an extreme example of elasticity of demand) and the prices (for such a simple drug) have gone sky high. Only someone with the spirit of Scrooge ( since it's also holidays) would intentionally explode the price of such an essential drug and leave people to die just he can get a bigger bonus bc the pharma industry is a cartel and not true market supplier.Everything medical related have huge markups because they can. Big pharma bro Martin Shkreli is an example of this mentality.

Hearing Aid Audiologist from Germany here, if anyone has questions feel free to ask! The Model Adam is wearing is a Widex Evoke 440 FS2, which is the High End Model of the Evoke Series. There are cheaper Versions of these available, with some features not activated. Even the most basic models will improve live quality dramatically.

@@myopiczeal actually, that´s what happened with my grandparents, they both had hearing problems and used this hearing gadgets. I remember a couple of times the discussion between my parents about buying a new one or now, cause of the high cost of a basic model. Always with aids there is abuse

@@myopiczeal Sure there is a markup, but it isnt as high as you might think, the High end models pay for the Engineering, so the low End models can be sold just above their production cost. Developing hearing aids is quite complex, you can not just use off-the-shelf parts. To keep up, every Manufacturer needs to develop a new chip every 4-5 years. Most People don't need the high end models, they dont let you hear better, they make hearing more relaxed, which is only important if you had hearing loss for a long time and getting hearing aids just now, it makes adapting to this new flood of information easier.

I spent 20 years as a troubleshooter in the business telephone arena both in Southern California, and Oregon. I fixed things others like me could not. For 20 years I had a blast!!!

Hey Adam and Tested crew! I just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience and outlook on having hearing aids and hearing loss. I was born almost four months premature and so I have hearing loss and pretty bad vision in my left eye. I've had to deal with wearing hearing aids since I was a very young child (I'm 27 now) and I still wear them today. At least I should, they are so expensive and most health insurance plans don't cover hearing loss so I have a six or seven year old pair of hearing aids I carry around but only put in when I really need to. I'm lucky enough that my hearing isnt so bad that I can do that. Anyway, I'm glad to see someone with your popularity and outreach make such great statements about something that even today is highly stigmatized. Thanks Adam, you've inspired me ever since the first episode of Myth busters and I'll never stop watching your content. Live long and Prosper.

Thank you for your heart felt message about your hearing aids my almost 10 year old daughter has worn them since she was 3 months old and they have made a world of difference hopefully your message will inspire others to get them and manufacturers will lower the cost and they will start being covered by insurance companies

When I borrowed my cousin's Magic Leap One, I had a similar experience where I fired one of the Grordbort's weapons that had an arcing trajectory and it went out of the window above my front door and I saw it through the window in the door as it landed in my cul-de-sac. There was something very compelling about that the way it treated the area outside of the scan.
