I have been disappointed in Leupold for some years now, feel like they sat on their namesake and let the competition pass them by. While doing this they seem to think their value is much higher than the competition. Once again sitting on their namesake, whilst there are now many other options of equal and or greater value, at a much more reasonable price. Gavin your camera mount, scope test platform, is absolutely awesome. I’m digging the crap out of it ,great ingenuity and fabrication skills.

It was disappointing having the LVPO sized objective, in a 40 or 44 mm would have been an absolute yes. However for only 2 oz more the 3.6x18x44 mk5 HD was the clear choice for my 16" .308 hunting rig.

Thanks for that fantastic review. I know of no other reviews that provide the precise information about tracking, magnification, and parallax that yours did. In fact, I’ve never seen any effort to confirm the latter two at all, and usually the tracking tests are conducted somewhat … casually, leading to questions about how accurate they are. I have had the same scope for about a month and it’s currently mounted on a 1970s-vintage M1A. Precision with that setup isn’t anything to brag about, but that has nothing to do with the scope that performs exactly as I hoped. I may move the sight to a different 308 autoloader that I have my eye on, but haven’t made any decisions about that yet. One of my reasons for getting this scope was my experiences with a maximum of 6 power magnification. The rifle I used one on was capable of delivering precise results at distances beyond what that magnification level was really suited for.

I look forward to checking one out in person. I love my 5HD 3.6-18x. My initial reaction to this: we REALLY don't need a 35mm tube for this type of scope, and the 24 oz. is also a bit past a tipping point IMHO. I'd much rather have a lighter, 34mm tube (or smaller).

Just purchased the Leupold mk5 3.6-18 h-59 for my Daniel Defense mk-12 5.56. The optic is a great match to my DDmk-12. I’m loading 77 smk’s that are producing 0.4-0.65” accuracy so far for five shot groups. It has tight vertical groups out just past 800 yds. The optic tracks perfectly through the entire elevation. Glass is remarkable and adequately compares to the my NF atacr’s and other optics above the Leupolds price point. The fov on 3.6 x should be great for up close running coyotes. I’m very happy with the Leupold mark 5 hd optic. Thanks for the video and informative content!!!!!

I've been running the same model in a SPUHR mount on a Christensen Arms MPR. It's crazy how lightweight that scope is for the power. That's one of the main reasons I went with it. Having a 10lb rifle that can reach out to a mile is a game changer.

Huge fan of 2-10 scopes. Glad to see Leupold getting a solid contender out there. I own a couple Vortex PST Gen 2s. Very easy to plink steel at even a 1000 yards. And a hell of a hunting scope. Does need a slightly updated reticle though and thats honestly my only ding on Leupold scopes in alot of cases.

Leupold makes great scopes, I have own many of them, but in low light at maximum magnification the exit pupil size of this scope is only 3 mm which will make the scope seem very dim. The human pupil size at dusk to nearly dark is 5-8 mm, you want a scopes exit pupil size to match the pupil size of the hunter to have a bright scope. A 50 mm scope at 10x gives you a 5 mm exit pupil which will appear brighter. There are better options for low light hunting applications.

Tried the zero stop. Hated it with a passion - can only be adjusted with a small Allen key, so each time you're shooting new ammo (or even the same ammo p/n, just different lot) out comes the key. I defaulted back to the VX-5HD 2x10 with only the pop-up rezero. Infinitely superior for my needs (I rarely dial elevation, and when I do, it's nowhere near a full rev).
@jasoncown

It's worthwhile for competitions, imo. Get it zeroed before a match like you would any time you shoot for precision, dial back to zero after every stage.

Ive watched every review on this scope hoping someone would shed light on the intended use for this scope's magnification range. Essentially, we're in between an LPVO and a dedicated midrange optic (4-16 or 3.8 to 18) With a good lpvo, you get an excellent 1X for cqb then a decent 8X or 10X on the high end. With the midrange optic ranges referenced above, , youve got all the magnification you need for out to 1000 yards +, and, then just get an offset Red dot for your cqb... BUT, WHAT PURPOSE DOES 2X10 fill?? You dont get cqb 1X and you dont get high end magnification... So, what exactly do you get? Who wants this 2X10?? For what purpose?? In What scenarios does a 2X10 shine? There are some great 3X9's out there for a fraction of the price .... Im a newer shooter, please help me understand. 🤙
@guyminer3168

Good question! When I used it on that short-barreled 308 I concluded that it offered a bit more of magnification range than the usual 3-9x scopes, or the wonderful 2.5-8x Leupold. 2x is getting down to the magnification for dangerous game/close range hunting, while 10x is plenty for some rather long range shooting. The increase in price is more for the quality of the scope than the magnification range. When I shot with it, I enjoyed using it. Was it perfect? I don't know. But, what is? And I'm the fellow who usually hunts with a simple 6x Leupold...

My main use of a 2-10x32 Viper PST is eye relief. I have it installed on a 20” AR. It a good optic for a “fighting rifle” works well in most situations but not great in all. I also have a March 1-10 shorty. On a 14.5”. It is a great but expensive optic that has quirks. Eye relief is the main issue, in conventional shooting positions it’s great, and the optic clarity makes it like like a red dot at close quarters. In my opinion there isn’t a do all optic. But if pushed to choose just one I have a 1-6 VCOG that has worked around the world for my needs. I hope this doesn’t confuse the issue more for you.

I’ve got a Athlon 1-10 second focal plane on a 16” POF Revolution DI. It’s not exactly what you would call a super high end optic but I’ve found it to be an excellent all round option. I haven’t really seen the need to put a offset red dot on it as the 1X field of view and eye box is incredible. Some people complain about the 10X eye box, but I’ve used many of the older high magnification glass for varmit shooting and this is way better than those. Ultimately, any optic is going to be a compromise at some level. That $500 Athlon is a great choice for a small frame 308 and it’s allowed me to stock up on a LOT of Norma ammunition with the money saved. It’s probably not a jumping out of helicopter in Afghanistan optic, but at some point you’ve got to realize what you’re going to be actually doing with your weapon.

Did you try macro lens or lens with shorter focus capability. When I have time I will set up firm set up. That was hand held looking in the view finder. Just Thinking. Can you tell about twilight performance? I know it's just a 30mm objective and you cannot reall compare to a 50mm objective.. But I am in love with the data on paper and love the way it looks and build quality. But here in Germany it's hard to find. Only 3 only dealers who sell this scope and no chance to test it without paying 3200€, what is about 3500USD😮 We live in a heavy populated agriculture landscape, and the most shots on game are taken in twilight hours, and just wildboars are allowed to be shot with either nightvision or thermal device. So, twilight ability is very important. I would appreciate and answer 😊 Thanks.
