Yeah, I think that's a pretty good mindset. It's quite likely going to be an entertaining film on it's own, but the problem is that it's definitely not going to capture much of the spirit of GITS, and that pollutes the legacy. Newcomers to the franchise are going to watch this, and even if it makes them go back to watch/read the original material, the franchise as a whole will probably never really be special to them. KaptainKristian's video about Calvin&Hobbes made me realize that. The only reason this movie is being made, at least from a corporate standpoint, is because a lot of people have heard that the original movie is good, but they don't want to go out of their way to seek out old media. they just want to consume new stuff. That's why FFVII is getting remade, it's why Psycho is getting remade, it's why almost every remake ever gets made. I'm not going to accuse people of being sheep, because I completely understand, but I do wish they'd consider what they really care about before buying.

The guys at weta workshop are incredible, they did all of the prop work on the lord of the rings trilogy, their dedication and commitment knows no bounds, they were making props for almost 2 years before they even started shooting the movies.

Love the huge influence taken from Innocence's sex dolls. This is basically a geisha-ed rendition of them. The film is taking from every animated iteration of the franchise: - Lots of shot-by-shot takes from the animated film - The geisha robot inspired from Innocence - Hideo Kuze from the second season of the series At least visually, the film should be a joy ride for GitS lovers. I know it'll be for me.

Sadly, I'm not super hyped for this movie, despite being a huge fan of the original film. I feel that part of GITS strength comes from its Eastern cinematography, like very spare usage of slow motion, use of long takes in action, etc (see John Wick if you want a good example). Most Western films, however, use fast cuts, abuse slow motion, and focuses more on spectacle than substance in set pieces.

So, what we have here is a live-action version of a classic animated film. The thinking seems to be, "Hey! It works for Disney several times a year. Next up: a live action version of "Mulan." Weta makes saleable statues, the geisha is one such; the whole thing stands about a foot tall(?), and has an interchangeable head so that you can have open or closed face. It's the whole geisha, though, and not just the head.

Easier options I guess... You can get the Blufans version of Ghost in the Shell the Bluray box is a geisha with an opening face. And someone did a limited run of A4 lenticular posters or steelbook magnets of the opening face too. . If you can find the Staff Box version of Ghost in the Shell Innocence that has the doll face opening too. They did some weird limited editions of Ghost in the Shell Innocence, including the fabled 'Dog Box' which included a basset hound music box...

i disagree. there was a lot of old-school tech elements in the GitS movies, especially the second one. it was more about old Japan and the contrast vs the new stuff, but if you see the thermosuit it looks futuristic as hell, vs a really old theme of prostitute/entertainer (some say it's the oldest job in the world, a profundly human one) being lavishly synthetic but elegant, like there was more than one way to do tech, a human one and an automated one. I imagine Motoko in the basin with those high-tech machine VS some old guy polishing the skin and adjusting the eyes on those geishas in his crummy workshop. to me it highlights a lot of Japanese modern culture in a way the animations couldn't (especially with the revival of the old traditional crafts in the last 20-30 years) in a cultore about robots and whether or not things have souls, it becomes very interesting to see those robots being "born" with human hands or soullessly manufactured. then again, I only go with what we've seen so far. we have to wait for the movie before judging it.

Simply amazing. Digital work is getting to the point that its becoming at times seamless compared to reality. But its the practical effects like this that gives great movies a whole other level. KZbin needs more of this. I remember being a kid watching Discovery Channel and the like, when they would show these amazing special FX behind the scenes production. Completely unreal how much work goes in to this stuff; and yes even when it comes to CGI.

Looks quite nice. That's one of the downsides to the movie, it probably will only be in the movie for a few minutes at best, you wont get close up looks of it probably or if you do it will be quick ones. So most people will miss out on the intricacies of these models.

I dunno, it's pretty reasonable to be wary and not expect anything from the movie. Most adaptations of eastern properties turn out bad from the perspective of the people who liked the original, and many people don't see a reason for it to be adapted at all. People have been burned too many times to think that this will be any good.

Just fantastic craftsmanship. I love that the film makers allowed Weta to take it this far you really have to respect that. Amazing job for all involved i cant wait to see the movie too.

No matter how good or bad this movie turns out to be no one can say that the teams working on costumes, practical effects, visuals, cgi etc didn't do an absolutely incredible job. From what we've seen so far, the movie's gonna look absolutely gorgeous.

I was just fascinated about how they pulled that off, keeping the gears spinning. How tiny must their servos be? I had a mini freakout at that point. Also the detail in the metal, especially around the eyes. Yea, gears don't make great robotics (sprockets do every once and awhile) but they certainly look cool and unique compared to the massive amount of Sci-fi material that's flooded the industry.

CreationsOfKoon. in a future where superhuman prosthetics are common couldnt you see such things being built as nich market luxury items? think of super high end cars built today, modern technology makes many automotive components dirt cheap to make in an effective and efficient way....yet people pay extra for a car with hand crafted highly artistic hood hinges.

It's a marriage of form and function. You could build an advanced robot out of hand-carved, laquered wood instead of machined plastic.

I also find this unfitting, the robots in GitS always looked very futuristic, but plausible. There was no sign of old craftmansship. The gears also look a little bit dated and no real engineer would expose them so much. All good craftmansship of the artists in honor, but I think I like the animated version more.

I'm so torn to see this movie. They did so much work to make it so incredible but not enough to use Asian actors on clearly an Asian movie. Yes that again. I love manga and anime too much to not say something. I'm may have to bite the bullet, but the jury not out yet. Great vid about truly talented workers and prop makers on the set.
