*_When at Weta, did you not tour the machine shop Adam? They have "a machine" I forget it's name and model, but it cuts swords "in no time". Meaning you can make an incredible sword-or prop sword-in no time, with no effort really._* *_Most/all prop swords sold by Weta are made this way._* *_Think of something in size of around 2 meter long, that's all the space that machine took up. And once cut, the swords can be tempered._* *_This takes all the fun out of going hiking in the woods searching for meteorites to later toil and make your own magical sword; but that machine makes real swords, or cuts real swords._*

The timing of this video is impeccable. I'm in the process of modelling a full line of Middle Earth weapons to be modded into Blade and Sorcery, a VR game. I've been scouring for reference of actual accurate props from weta and peter lyon vs the knock offs that are prevalent. I'm currently in the middle of making Striders Sword and Adam your last video with Peter Lyon where you both made a blade and showed off the original Strider Sword was so incredibly useful from a reference point of view and now you've made this video of Glamdring. Thanks so much for the close up footage and b-roll.

The lore behind Glamdring (Foe Hammer) is epic, made for Turgon, the Elvin king of Gondolin forged in the first age but lost after the fall of Gondolin during the war with Morgoth. Totally bummed I missed out on getting a full size replica of Glamdring, it’s the best looking sword in the films. (The best piece of anything is the King’s chest piece armor, only because the actor revealed that the armorer even decorated the INSIDE of it, even though no one but the actors would see it (well until the behind the scenes extras on the extended edition). That kind of hidden detail always shows the dedication of the artists that make things for films and theater productions.

Weta occasionally releases a limited edition of replicas of weapons from LotR, called the "Master Swordsmith's Collection," all made by Peter Lyon himself. They run anywhere from $5000-12000 USD, if memory serves. And in some cases they're made with even more expensive materials and techniques than the original props. On the original prop for Sting, for example, the elven vine around the grip was just a vinyl transfer; on the "Master Swordsmith" version, it's REAL silver worked into the wood. The latest one they released was Eowyn's sword (with a scabbard, too!), and it is just gorgeous!
