Adam, having just seen your rant on "bevel cuts", one suggestion to resolve your issues with them is to make a V fence plate jig insert for your table saw cross cut sled. Make the V perfectly 90°, 45° each side of the blade, with the point centered on the kerf. This way you can make bevel cuts referencing each piece to the appropriate jig fence where even if your jig is out 0.5° the bevel faces will be parallel and the stock will end up in a 90° relationship, rather than trying to get the exact 45° referencing to a single fence. Alternative is to make a 90° fence jig for your cross cut saw, same principle, where you cut one end against the normal fence and the matching end aligned against the 90° jig fence. Essentially this would be like stacking the ends with the pieces in final 90° orientation, and cutting through both at once.

To REALLY do bevel cuts with the level of precision Adam (i presume) would like, a miter trimmer is the tool you want. Example: Lee Valley has one for ~$219 US - pricey, but when it's the tool you want it REALLY would make a difference. I do not own one; it's not the kind of woodworking I do...just passing on acquired wisdom...

Adam needs a bevel jig for his table saw. It doesn't even have to be a perfect 45 as you use each side of the jig to cut corresponding sides of the from so they match up perfectly.

In fact, i had gotten through the entire project without a single sniffle and was feeling rather proud of myself for it. UNTIL I SAW YOUR COMMENT. Half a box of Kleenex later, i tried to recall every single wood build my Pop had done just for me, some of which i still have (i’m 62…hoard much?). And then, there’s the unfinished sailing ship that lives in a storage shed here on my property, that he did from scratch, no kit, and all the individual strips of wood he cut for it that remain unused. The ship itself is 3 or 4 feet long and a couple of feet or so high, counting the masts and all. It is my dream to find some talented soul who is willing to undertake the completion of this vessel, which is probably just that: a dream. Adam, if you are ever up in Mendocino County (about 150 miles north of San Francisco), i have a project that’s got your name on it! Free of charge! Yours to keep! Make it so, Number One!! I just hate to see it go to waste.

"Miter cuts" :) And remember, rather than doing them by hand, if you don't want to bring out the miter saw, you can always do them on the table saw, you just have to make sure to get a solid 45 on the blade. And actually, you could probably "Adamify" it and do them on the Bridgeport.. That could be a good time. :)

So many little descriptive words that our brain just picks a kinda-related word, and we will say it with full confidence and without even second-guessing. I've managed to say veneer instead of patina before. Entirely wrong, but still a word relating to a top layer finish.

@@matthewray6008 I've always been under the impression that you use "miter" when talking about the joint and "bevel" then discussing the angle of the joint. Kinda an "every miter has bevels, but not every bevel is a miter" thing.. More of the reason for the existence of "Dual Bevel Miter Saws". That being said, I'm an amateur woodworker at best. :D

Very cool! Soft close, power outlets, USB ports, and auto-lights! What more could you want in an end table/nightstand? ... A 6" circular section that lifts up, and underneath is a hot cup of coffee... on demand!

I use a sanding disk on my table saw (on a backing plate that mounts just like a regular saw blade) to sneak up on perfect bevel cuts. I make sure to (1) use an accurate angle gauge, (2) use a solid metal backing disk that won't warp, and (3) set up my cross-cut jig properly (at perfect angle to spinning disk). Place an item in the sled, adjust the "blade" to whatever angle I need, and carefully present the work to the spinning sandpaper just a tiny bit at a time. I can even make compound bevel cuts this way. I love your entire maker series!

I'm a little concerned that when the drawers are fully open the light won't work as it will be behind the drawer but can't see an obvious solution short of putting the light IN the drawer rather than above it with the messier look that would have given. Maybe they just need a stop to prevent the drawer fully opening.

It's great and nicer than anything I'd make but there are two things really bugging me about the lighting system: 1) The USB ports are upside down! Once you know the proper way it's really irritating when things are backwards. 2) There could be an extra layer of insulating paper around the switch terminals to help prevent shocks. Fortunately both of these points could be addressed without much work.

AS a guitar builder, I love that a Japanese pull saw is chosen over a power tool...I have been scratch building acoustics for 30 years, and have sill never used a table saw. you need to get a shooting board! Used with a hand plane you can fine-tune the fit of your bevel cuts to be absolutely perfect every time.

Cutting miters is truly the bane of my woodworking existence. I've done them on the table saw with an analog angle gauge, digital gauge, on the miter saw, and by hand with a miter block and they never ever come out right!

Wonderful project, thank you so much for sharing! I love the way your end tables turned out. I must say that one missing element was the ability to see your wife's reaction upon the presentation of your gift. In any case, I daresay she was thrilled. And btw, although I am neither expert nor professional in building things, I've been attempting to for decades. I would love to engage in mechanical projects, but most of my forays have been into the Land of Woodworking, where I feel I can grasp the problems at hand and solve them to at least a respectable degree. (As reluctant as I am to take on mechanical projects, I'm downright petrified of plumbing projects and refuse to go near them. Let's call it plumbophobia. One of Dante's 'circles of hell' should be plumbing projects.) Anyway, tung oil has long been my finish of choice for indoor furniture and objects; I just love its quality and the way it allows the grain to come through-especially when applied with patience. For slabs of felt I spray adhesive it onto a thin sheet of ply and then cut on the table saw using an old fine-tooth blade. Surprisingly clean cuts.

Built myself a new workbench out of very nice plywood, 4x4's and 2x4's over the weekend to replace the small pre-fab bench that came with the house. I was so excited about how it all came out. I agree with your comment about the drawers, I had extra material, so I salvaged some of the drawer slides from the old bench and remade a very small drawer for one side of the bench and it was so satisfying. Wish I could include a picture.

You can get 1/4" (5-ply), 1/2" (9-ply), and 3/4" (13-ply) Baltic Birch Ply from most of the woodworking shops like Rockler and Woodcraft. Love the stuff. And I even like using the ply as an accent to my builds with it.

Adam I have watched you for years and have alway admired all your thoughtfulness, but watching you push all that soft cedar off the table saw and let it drop to the floor is uncomfortable for me. I am also a maker and take such pride in my work, as you do. I understand that space is a premium, but a small outfield table is a must one day build. Respect to you Steve Dunn

Oh Adam... as a woodworker, there was a part of me that was yelling my brains out watching this. No outfeed table, using a Japanese Ryoba on huge material, not using your bandsaw to rip that big boy, no dust mask while sanding... oy vey. I still love you man.

Having a bandsaw in San Francisco isn't like having a bandsaw anywhere else. Generally mine never has the space around it necessary to swing an 8' piece of lumber and I opt for the Ryoba too.

A bit off topic, but I’ve been enjoying adams apron for just over a month now. I work at a bike shop and it is so convenient having all my tools on me and not needing to reach behind to the bench to grab something or loosing tools deep in my pants pockets. I know they are pretty far out on orders, but if you have been thinking about getting one I highly recommend it. Such a high quality bit of kit for a rather reasonable price!
