I think a lot of the raves for certain sunscreens come when people are using only a fraction of the 1/4 teaspoon guideline. They probably perform way differently with a tiny pea amount that I see so many people using. 💜

Let's take a moment to reflect on the cost of SPFs, especially mineral. Used in the recommended amounts, some SPFs make $150/oz foundations look dirt cheap. Look at Ilia, 1 oz for $64. One oz = 6 tsp = 24 applications. Is that correct? Would wearing Ilia SPF serum cost $1,000 per year? Wow. That doesn't even include your hand and body SPFs. Is it difficult to formulate an elegant mineral sunscreen? It must be, or else we wouldn't need videos like Angie's. But is it difficult enough to warrant $1,000/year? Interestingly, chemical sunscreens have also risen in price as brands have noticed how willing consumers have been to pay for mineral SPF. Time for a consortium of consumers and skin cancer organizations to help fund clinical studies that would allow modern chemical sunscreens from Korea and Europe to enter the US market. Avobenzone shouldn't be our only alternative to 100% mineral. More manufacturers could provide inexpensive, high quality SPFs for us.

At 62 I've been using the Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF50 brush sunscreen. It comes in 3 different color shades goes on quick and easy, is water resistant for 80 mins. Looks great on it's own. Or as a finishing powder over make-up. Leaves a perfect matte finish on the skin. I've been using it year-round for the last 15 years and have never had a problem with it's wear or sun protection. And it's the only sunscreen my husband and sun will readily use on a daily basis. It's also compact enough to travel nicely in pockets or purses and can be reapplied if necessary while on the go. Living in Southern CA we get a lot of sun here and so need something that really works even when we're out all day being active.

Angie, today I tested a new mineral sunscreen and I totally loved it. Maybe you or other people here want to try it as well. I'm talking about the Heliocare mineral tolerance fluid spf 50 ( Pa ++++). It was amazing; no white cast, no shine, no greasiness or oiliness, no shiny finish, no settling in hairline or in wrinkles, very natural makeup free finish, water resistant (they don't say for how long but it feels like a wel resistant one). Put it on your 'to try' list
@Lighthouse18522 жыл бұрын
Heliocare as a brand gets very good reviews. Unfortunately like many other overseas SPF filters, I don't think it's available in the US, at least not widely. I'll try to get some if I get to Europe. Ditto for Ultraviolette and drugstore brands over there.

I tried the Babo, loved how it looked on my skin, but then had the same nasty reaction to it hours later as I did to the Mychelle. It smells like Mychelle as well. Really too bad because it looked and felt nice and the price is quite reasonable. Comparing the ingredients in these two sunscreens, then eliminating ingredients that are also present in sunscreens I tolerate well, there were about 10 possible culprits. The one that seems to be a common irritant is hydrolyzed wheat protein.

Hi Angie I think skin type plays a big role in how any spf sits on the skin. My current favourite is the colourscience original spf50. It has a light peachy tint and looks really smoothing on my very dry skin - allowing me to skip foundation and just use concealer where needed for a bit of extra coverage. I'm super pale so it will be a bit dark in the Winter months, but for right now it's working well for me. It doesn't look shiny on me and unlike many mineral spf's doesn't really dry my skin out, then making my rosacea feel irritated. It's just enough coverage to blur mild redness and feels comfortable on my skin. Perhaps my having such dry skin (rosacea and eczema) is the reason they don't look as shiny on me, but anything matte sucks every vestige of moisture out of my skin and makes me look older. I'm fine with a slight white cast as I'm so pale, but if I'm wearing a tinted spf I'm hoping to avoid the need for foundation on a hot Summer day tbh. The prices for some of these spf's is getting to be really high. I pay £24 roughly for my colourscience bottle, which is less than $39 even factoring in the exchange rate. When you consider the generous amount needed a 55ml bottle doesn't last that long, so it's becoming more and more expensive to protect ourselves. Best wishes.

I feel like we have similar taste in sunscreens and I love that. One that I think you’ll like is the kate Summerville spf 40, 4+. It’s a non-tinted, all mineral, and a natural matte finish. It leaves a very light white cast on my brown tan skin but it’s not bad once I put make up over it (so I think it’ll leave zero on your tone). It is pricy but I would say it’s best pricy sunscreen I’ve tried. I got it on a random bogo sale they had on their site.

I ended up at Urgent Care where I was prescribed Steroid shot and oral steroids. It was a total of 12 days to recovered. I posted the review with photos on Amazon. The most popular sun cream / lotion in Europe is Nivea. They have a dozen options. They have a lotion SPF 50 with 5 star UVA protection (5+). One of my favorite mineral sunscreens is SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 32 (Tinted). It feels like a light moisturizer, the tint cancels out the whitish cast of titanium oxide and zinc oxide, there’s none of the lavender, almost iridescent cast that some other mineral sunscreens have, and it looks great on its own or under makeup. The Colorescience color balms are also lovely to wear over mineral sunscreens (and add another layer of SPF protection). They provide a sheer wash of color, are extremely blendable and buildable, and can be used on cheeks, lips and eyes.

I just love the tinted Elta MD for my face. My derm loves it and I love it and I finally feel no need to venture away from it. I honestly cannot understand why anyone would spend $50+ on a little bottle of sunscreen. Have we become insane that we will spend that much money on this stuff? Are we women over 40 falling prey to the marketing that we craved so much for years. I say, give me my Omnilux, some basic sound skincare and Elta MD sunscreen. My 63 year old skin has never looked better. I appreciate all the testing you do to protect us from this predatory anti aging marketing.

Such an important comment. The marketing and “pink tax” is a wallet-draining combination. When I check out beauty channels, I always wonder what else women could invest in versus clothes, makeup, shoes and bags. NOT to judge those things, they have their place, but your point is not lost!

I use and love the Tatcha because it’s a perfect color match, I don’t wear make up and I can reapply easily. All of the Elta MDs made me look Orange. I understand it’s a splurge but I love my SPF and I have a simple affordable routine otherwise.

The prices are getting outrageous but at least there are great products that aren't too expensive! I noticed that most of these sunscreens were being marketed directly to younger women with shades of brown skin, all showing them putting on just a few drops of the products a claiming "no white cast" or "invisible" on skin. They're doing a double disservice to women by encouraging using a tiny amount and draining their wallets and delivering a false idea of sun protection. With the Tik Tok boom these expensive products are going viral and selling tons to women of all ages.
@amandalwayman40462 жыл бұрын
@@LoveABun I use The Ordinary Matrixal, Lactic Acid and Niacinimide, Timeless Vitamin C, and cerave PM. Very inexpensive routine. My splurge is on my prescription Retin A, which I only use 3 times a week now. The Omnilux red light was a real investment but it has done amazing things for my skin. It took about 8 weeks of diligent use to see the difference but it was worth it. Takes 10 minutes a day. Even my derm said she could really see the difference. I have found The Ordinary and Timeless products (which I only buy when on sale). To be as good or better than the expensive products I wasted $ on over the years.

@La Bella Vanity I feel that so many products marketed to women, especially older women, are trying to sell the promise of a return of our youth. There are really great products out there that don’t rob us of our hard earned money. When you look at how much an ounce we are paying for these items, it is sickening . We are smarter than that!

Hi Angie! Just what you want…..I have a phenomenal sunscreen recommendation! It’s the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air-Fit. It’s a physical SPF 50 PA++++. I am one who has ALWAYS HATED all sunscreens but NOT this one! It is the most perfect sunscreen I have ever tried! And I have tried so so sooooo many. I have dry skin and it works perfectly and I also truly believe it would work just as well for oily skin. My daughter, who is 15, has the complete opposite skin. She is oily and acne prone and adores it too! Everyone, please check it out! ❤️

Hi Angie. I never understood why sunscreens have become so expensive. It's crazy. I must try the Babo. The Elta MD tinted sunscreen is my go to, and I've tried the Coola, but it seems not to dry down. Both are pretty reasonably priced, but I will add the Babo to my list. Even though I have dry skin, your recommendations always seem to work for me. Have an amazing weekend. 🥰💖

I live in Florida, have great skin for a 72-year-old, but failed to use a sunscreen daily as they all felt greasy under makeup. UNTIL I saw this video and tried Babo SPF 50 tinted mineral sunscreen. It is A-MAZ-ING. Goes on smoothly, dries QUICKLY and no white cast. I don’t even use a primer anymore. My makeup goes on smoothly and sets nicely. What an unexpected find!

I love the mychelle especially in the summer when it's hot ( it's 110f right now) and I'm oily. Very matte and goes on very dry. Make up looks great over it! I use the Aussie gold in the winter when I'm less greasy. I adore both of these products.

Hi Angie - do you keep a spreadsheet of information on all the sunscreens you test? It would be very interesting/helpful to see a comparison on everything w/r/t the usual characteristics you speak about... thanks for your content!

Thx for recommending the R&R, have used it for 2 days and while it’s different from anything I’ve used before, I like it. I had been using Neutrogena Age Shield broad spectrum 70, but hated it being so white and rubbing onto clothing if getting dressed too soon. The R&R dries fairly quickly on me. Also thx for the tip of the 3 finger method for measuring- I’ve been doing this for the past few wks.

I tried the Babo tinted spf and I had the same allergic reaction I had to the myChelle - red face with burning feeling. So sad as I love that watery formulation! Maybe I’m getting more sensitive with age but my other creamy sunscreens are fine but these don’t play nice on my skin at all! Anyone else have an issue with these?
@slaterbaloff9992 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry you had that reaction, so did I! For me, I'm thinking having Calcium Sodium Borosilicate so high in the ingredients is the problem. Google is saying it's a 'glass-like material', which doesn't sound great on sensitive skin.

Oh! I have rosacea too and have trouble finding a good tinted sunscreen! I thought chemical suncreen was out of question, would you share your recommandations?
@skincarewithaustin2 жыл бұрын
@@Mrs.Tarasevitch American chemical filters are a bit antiquated in my opinion - they often cause a lot of irritation, stinging, a weird ‘warming’ sensation, redness, eye stinging, etc. I think the new generation filters are really well tolerated by sensitive skin, provide more stable protection, and are gentle(r) on the eyes. I’m in Germany personally and I think some of these might be exclusive to German drugstores 🧐 But I love the Sun Ozon sensitive sunscreens available at Rossman. I also like the Nivea sensitive (in the little white squeeze tube. Not the larger body versions), Garnier super UV, Paediprotect sun spray, Suncut UV perfect gel (this one is Asian. SUPER water resistant. Heavy alcohol content), La roche posay UVmune 400 (similar to Garnier), and the Babylove Sonnencreme sensitive SPF 50.

Love your videos, Angie! Thank you for taking the time and trying all these sunscreens. However, im not sure I will ever buy a sunscreen from an unknown, small company, as I prefer the big brands that have more money to invest in research and development. My personal mineral all time favorite is the ISDIN. The mineral is just perfect. It goes a little dark, but blends beautifully in my pale skin. It's perfect for summer, and it is 3.4 oz!!

Drunk elephant bronzer drops are great way to eliminate the white cast. Just add a couple drops and mix. It doesn’t affect SPF rating as using just a small amount. I like Vanicream mineral SPF 50. No irritation or greasiness.

Great video!!! I’m using the Summer Fridays under makeup but I’ve been using heavier moisturizer because of skin products I’m using and I love it under most foundations. But there is one that it combines with to make it look drier. I’m also pale enough that it didn’t have a cast to it.
