The Elta MD UV Lements contains Butyloctyl Salicylate which is very close in chemical composition to the chemical sunscreen Octisalate. Colorscience uses it as well. Many brands do. It's used as a booster for UV protection and I think it's fair to say if a sunscreen contains it, it isn't a truly mineral only sunscreen. Not necessarily a problem in the formula, but it's disingenuous for brands to be scaremongers about chemical filters when they're using one.

The Ethyl Ferulate in sunscreens causes rashes in some people. MyChelle and Babo have this. So does Kosas tint. Found this out because the original Biossance spf ( which caused me massive allergic reaction) was recently reformulated without this ingredient and they announced on their webpage that this had caused problem for their customers so they eliminated it.
@holly9397 ай бұрын
@amypovak4750 Oh, thank you so much! I had a bad reaction to the reformulated MyChelle - redness and irritation. I had a severe reaction to the Babo Botanicals with redness, irritation, a rash and swelling that required a visit to urgent care where they prescribed high dose steroids. I don't have sensitive skin nor an allergy to wheat, and these are the only skin products I've ever reacted to. Now I know what ingredient to avoid!

Yes! Same with MyChelle, Babo and Biossance for me. I am allergic to shell fish and the ethyl ferulate is somehow related (derived?) and I got hives and a rash from Biossance that lasted 8 weeks. I didn’t know they reformulated but I still would be scared to try it. 😳

I don’t have a shellfish allergy…and hope I don’t develop one. But I do have sensitive skin, rosacea and allergies to other things. I don’t know if ethyl ferulate is limited to just spf or if it’s in other cosmetic concoctions but I read labels thoroughly since this has caused me trips to the ER.

One of my go-to sunscreen for dealing with acne-prone skin is littlllextra rice berry SPF 50+ sunscreen. The major issues I face with a lot of sunscreens are that either they lead to breakouts or they dry out my skin and burn. However, this sunscreen doesn't do this and it applies great under makeup which as an acne-prone girl I nearly daily wear.

I play a lot of pickleball and this is the only sunscreen that doesn't get into my eyes when I sweat. The ingredient in the Mychelle SPF that causes the rash for me is the ethyl ferulate (confirmed via dermatology allergy testing) - it’s a derivative of ferulic acid and is a fairly new ingredient in the industry. It’s only in the tinted version, so those who otherwise liked this one might want to check out the un-tinted option. It’s also in Pipette baby mineral SPF 50 sunscreen.

The Australian Gold is THE one for summer in hot humid weather. I love the matte finish and it wears all day, even if you sweat and swim. The flip side is it's hard to remove. I use cetaphil or cera ve cream first, and then wash it off with cleanser. I wish it came in more shades bc the lightest one is a tiny smidge too dark for my porcelain skin. But it's still my favorite sunscreen of all time - so far! Thanks Angie, for this useful video! ❤

Hi Angie whilst the USA is ahead in many things sunscreen isn’t one of them and I think the Australian or European spfs are the best you can buy. I have extremely dry, rosacea and eczema prone skin which is incredibly reactive to many ingredients including zinc which really dries me out. I use Ultrasun as it’s longwear (tested to be the spf on the bottle after eight hours) and it doesn’t irritate my skin. It’s a combination spf with chemical new filters and titanium dioxide. It’s fragrance free and available in many finishes including tinted, glowy, extra lightweight serum style or even a true gel vehicle. They do a mineral version but I haven’t tried that one as I know it’s drying on my skin and I am happy with the longevity of the normal formula. Far East eg Korean and Japanese formulas have become really popular but few of them are water resistant and ultrasun is so it’s excellent as a beach or everyday spf. It does pass the Australian testing which is the most stringent in the world, but there are many others available in the EU or Australia that may be just as good. I can’t use the old chemical filters at all but there are so many newer chemical filters available in the rest of the world that may be just as gentle (or even more so) than mineral spfs. Best wishes x

In terms of purely mineral I don't think anything beats murad city skin age defense pa++++ although it bothers me that it's pa++ SPF 15 in Australia. Some of there "purely mineral" sunscreen have hidden organic filters like butyloctyl salicylate which is basically the same octisalate. For example colorescience has butyloctyl salicylate in a lot of their products while fearmongering about organic filters and saying there products are all pure mineral. Lab muffin has a whole video talking about that. I don't think the mineral sunscreens are necessarily safer but I have very sensitive eyes so before I found the first two I mentioned I would use USA mineral or combination sunscreens which I guess is what the colorescience ones are even though they kindof lie about it.

I don't have a wheat allergy but I'm sensitive to coconut & coconut derivatives (which is in SO many hydrating products) which is why I love the Babo Botanicals

I still love R&R Undefined and i also just bought the Haru haru which I like a lot. I'm going to give the Australian gold another shot but it sometimes made my face feel itchy. Because of you Angie, i now wear sunscreen everyday! Thank you for this great video! 😘

R&R works so well for me for last.few.yrs. Just enough tint to give me a.bit of coverage but very thin and easy to apply.

I think I have seen almost all of your 9 years of these. Such a great video. And so helpful

The haruharu is good for me if I'm not wearing any primer. Unfortunately I have very large pores and need a pore filling or blurring primer. On top of any blurring primer I've used it causes my foundation to look blotchy or to pill. I've ordered the #1 sunscreen on this list. It should arrive tomorrow. Excited to try it!

Thank you for this video! Still wish the Elta md hadn’t been reformulated😢but have ordered the healthy labs and looking forward to trying it!

Love it! My all time favorite is still the Colorscience original, not the flex one. Its the one I enjoy applying

I mix the Australian Gold with the Dr G. More Dr G if skin feels dryer and more AG if more oily. Been using for years thanks to Angie!!

The first bottle of R&R I really liked. The one I purchased most recently leaves my skin with an oily feeling and a slick shine. And I have dry skin. Not sure what happened. Really appreciate this video; I will try one of the other best-of-the-best you recommend. Thanks again Angie!

Hi Angie!!! this was perfect timing....my reliable elta MD changed its formula...to greasy for me now.....and I loved it so much, these are definitely great alternatives...Thank you and appreciate you!!!

Try UV Physical. Unless they reformulated that one since my last tube, it is good for oily skin. I had to add a little more moisturizer for my 62 year old skin.

Angie!! I loved this video ☀️💛🧡 thank you , I went to a cosmetic dermatologist to get a chemical peel and she said I can tell you take care of your skin, that’s the best compliment 🎉 I use sunscreen 🧴 everyday no matter what

Thank you, Angie. These videos are always helpful and informative! I am in the middle of morning skincare and I have my Healthy Skin Lab sunscreen at my fingertips. Yay! I alternate days using it or my Alastin or Elta MD. I sure wish I'd had these sunscreens decades ago then I wouldn't be fighting the sun damage dark spots on my cheeks. It's a daily contest with devices and skincare trying to keep them less noticeable. Sigh!😔

I've tried lots of Angie's wining sunscreens, and the CeraVe is the only one that burned my eyes. I also am lighter than Angie, and it looks good on my skin. The Australian Gold is hard to find in the lighter shades, so if you find it, grab it. I quit using the Australian Gold, though, because it is just so hard to get off. I have dry skin & it does seem to want to "stick" to my skin and not come off. The EltaMD has been my go to under my powder foundation, but it's a little dark. It's my favorite to blend with CeraVe to make it just a tiny bit tinted instead of too dark.

I do not have a wheat or gluten allergy but the Michele sent me to the emergency room three times before I narrowed it down to what was making my face swell with an allergic reaction. Had to get a steroid injection and was on one round of oral steroids. I hated it because it was a great sunscreen. However, the Australian Gold has always been the one I reach for and still do. Thanks for your reviews, they help me make informed decisions. ❤

I am about to buy my 3rd tube of Nivea Sun Even Tone BB SPF 50+ tinted. This is perfect for my very mature sensitive skin. I apply it once daily and have no need to add makeup over it except occasionally a little blush.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video. I bought the Australian Gold tinted sunscreen and tried it out this morning. I absolutely love it. The color is perfect for me and it felt so nice going on. Not sticky or greasy. I think I have a new favorite!

I love the first aid beauty mineral sunscreen. I used it in Arizona when I was visiting in April but my go to right now has been the Dr Jart BB tinted moisturizer 44 SPF.. I absolutely love it and use it as a foundation on my make up no make up days.

Great run down Angie. Thank you so much for continuing to push the importance of wearing sunscreen every day and to wear the recommended amount of 1/4 tsp. Few do that but we all must continue to push this!!!! I wanted to love the R&R but can’t get past the smell and having combo skin, it’s super shiny on me. Love the Australian Gold and Eltamd. Absolutely love the HaruHaru!

Thank you for updates! Midwest Summers require Australian Gold, have been a faithful user since you first reviewed. Mix the Light & med shades for my tone match. I picked up Cerave to try for dog walking in the morning. It NEVER dried down! Back to First Aid Beauty for that.

I loved this video. I have tried several of these based on your recommendation. I will rank the ones I tried. 5. Babo Botanical - bad reaction - ended up in urgent care 😢 4. Mychelle 3. DRMTLGY (not on your list today) 2. Unrefined R&R 1. Australian Gold - my eye doctor’s assistant told me that my skin looked amazing today ❤ This one is my holy grail. Thanks Angie! Love your videos!

I look so forward to your sunscreen videos! I know that the Haru Haru is not mineral but I cannot believe how amazing it is! It feels great and is wonderful under makeup, I'm glad that it got "honorable mention". Elta MD & Australian Gold continue to be my favorite minerals. I probably never would have tried them without you. Thank you for continuing to educate us & test sunscreen options for us!

Great video! I have used so many of the sunscreens you talked about today ( thanks to you). As an oily skin girl, I love the Babao and MyChelle sunscreen. It looks like foundation (particularly MyChelle). I am Canadian, I wear the CereVe sunscreen in the winter and Australian Gold in the summer, perfection. I love how you describe each sunscreen and suggest who would it would suit. I will try a couple more of your suggestions. As a Canadian I can’t get some of these sunscreen delivered here, so I will pick them up them up when I am in the states next time.

I did not realize how many of your recommendations I had tried over the years until today. I still use many of them. The Cereve and Neutrgina both broke me out. I still use the Australian Gold, the Elta MD, and this year's new one. I loved the Flex, but good Lord it is expensive for as fast as I go through Sunscreen. That is the only downside, so many good sunscreens are so expensive for how much you need to use. Thank you for testing every year. I would go broke doing it.
