I miss this time in video card history, cards looked cool, they didn't take up 4 slots, sli/crossfire was still a thing. Back then building PCs was more fun IMO. We were seeing big leaps in technology still, opposed to 5% uplift every generation.

I know new games don't really support it... but I feel like this technology could still be viable if sli wasn't so goofy. I think they eventually dropped the need for an SLI finger but also matching cards seems unnecessary. seems mostly like features to make it arbitrarily exclusive. Maybe I'm just salty, but buying a second card for a significant performance boost just sounds so appealing when the high end of the GPU market is still fucked but the rest has largely recovered. It's not really the end of the market I'm in, but seeing things all post apocalyptic isn't reassuring for the future.

@@pptemplar5840 You didn't need matching cards back in the day. You could go with different brands, heck you could do different models, (as long as it was 2 amd cards or 2 nvidia cards) but it would clock down the better card to the lower end one so they basically matched. I did this a few times.

And a good GPU (like 3870 or 8800 GT) cost only 200EUR yet they still ran games nicely. These days 200EUR gets you only a low-end dGPU.

@@RuruFIN200 Euros were waaaay more valuable in 2008 than they are in 2024, when comparing the average wage in my country.

As I recall this was the first time ATI/AMD decided not to compete in the high end. The strategy didn’t work great for 3870 but it did for 4870 that turned out to be a great card for the price. The 4000 series quickly replaced 3000 and I never owned any 3000 series card.

If I remember right the HD4000 was pin compatible with the 3870 so they could save money on boards.

I have a HD3850 and HD 4890 in working condition, i used HD 4890 with windows 7 on Black Mesa game and i had 60 FPS low settings.

I have one machine with the X1900's and the external cable for crossfire. It is a Q6850 machine with XP. I have another X58 board with a Xeon version of the 990X i7. That machine has two R9-280Xs. Love ATI stuff.

Pretty reasonable results for what they are. But wait until you run a hd4870x2 or 2 4870s in crossfire. The difference between my 3870x2 and 4870x2 is pretty big for what they are.

Nice!!!! i just build my Retro Gaming PC with pair of HD 3870 1GB model (Dell OEM) with i7 870 and MSI Big Bang-Fuzion (P55+Lucid LT24102) for weird dual GPU other then CF or SLI and it working great play old games.

i managed to snatch a pair of identical blue pcb sapphire versions of those 3870s , has the same graphic as your sapphire the lady with the gun . both were shipped to me for a grand total of $23 with shipping included , the kicker is they appear to be new based on visual and acting condition , did not come with the boxes but aside from that i'm impressed to get both in immaculate condition for this price

I own spphire ATI Radeon HD 3850 1GB GDD3 model. I wanted to get 3870 1GB GDD4 card or cards but it was expensive and hard to find. In USA 1 card was currently sold 340 USD. I wonder what are results for 1GB variants because GPU memory size and speed make a lot of difference in resolution and textures! Next is drivers and OS. Draivers are affecting 50-20% of performance for single card. Finding the right combination for one game or benchmark is a lot of work and testing. I like HD 3000 series because it was the last card series to support adaptive anti alising!

I have one still that I've been hanging onto for a long time. The thing that disappointed me about the HD3870x2 is that the x2 had GDDR3 instead of GDDR4 memory.

Hey, which driver version did you use? Everything after 11.12 is notoriously buggy and slow. I would recommend the 11.11C drivers. They are the fastest and most stable ones. My 4890 gained like 12K points in 3DMark03 using Windows 7 vs the newer legacy drivers. It's nuts. The driver situation on TeraScale is really bad. It's basically the reason why AMD has the bad driver reputation.

I never understood why they couldn't stack vram capability. Also SLI / Crossfire implementation was halfbaked compared to how SLI worked in the Voodoo 3dfx days which spread the workload of each card much better by having each card draw scanlines instead of a vertical or horizontal half.

Both Apex Legends and Fortnite support SLI and Crossfire. Implementations vary depending on your setup which means frametimes will also vary. There are official lists of these games. I did a dual RX 460 4GB Crossfire not too long ago and it was pretty good in apex and needed a command entered in the CLI of Fortnite. Fortnite still stuttered but it smooths out after a while. Apex cranks with two RX 470s. Ujnfortunatl;ey I only have GTX 470s to crossfire so I haven't bothered to test them with either game yet. Hoping to get my hands on another GTX 1080 so I can see how that runs. BTW, they work in DX11. In DX 12 it's a crapshoot.

I happen to still have a 3870 X2 (2 GPU's on one PCB) 1GB model. How rare is it? It was part of my very first PC build. It still works but needs to be repasted.
