Thank y'all for taking the time to really show how important it is to use quality broad heads. An ethical hunter should never use any of that cheap junk. It should be illegal to even sell that garbage to the hunt live animals with.

It would be interesting to see this type of testing on the "old guard" broadheads like the Ace Standard 160g ($7 each), Zwickey Eskimo ($8.30 each), Tusker Aztec ($6 each) to see how well they do.

I agree. I can tell you I bent a Tusker Delta on a cow elk shoulder, once. The Ace heads are great, esp. since they started brazing them way back when. But the bumpy interlocking ferrule profile gives them demerits innthe Ashby 12 Factors system. Still, I bought five 6-packs and they might last me til I die.

Those mechanicals from Amazon at that price are obviously junk. But when a front deploying broadhead stops The blades slam back forward and appear to have not opened. You would need to examine the hide to see if they opened or not.

So Troys point about the insert bending is interesting. I had several aluminum outserts bend. These were from a reputable company. The theory was that the length of the field tip, 200 gr, provided enough leverage to bend the threaded portion of the field tip and the aluminum portion. I would not have believed it and would have assumed I hit a reinforcement in the target had it not happened to every arrow in my quiver at a shoot. It can happen but only under a specific set of circumstances. I have since switched to a full stainless outsert system with no issues.
@stephenballard3759
@stephenballard3759 20 күн бұрын
Oh, and thanks to Troy gor clearing something up. Clear back in Traditional Bowhunter Magazine's Ashby article series, Dr. Ed had mentioned the threaded stem on broadheads being an "area of significant weakness and vulnerability to damage", which I had beleived ever since. Now, with Troys work, I had wondered all along why that was no longer true. Seems like, similar to how it developed that adding insert weight didnt help if the head was fragile, the screw-in bit is only a liability if the rest of the head already sucks. Good to know.

Thanks for doing this guys. I'm always on the lookout for something that's actually functional and cheap. I have bought several Ebay broadheads out of curiosity, and I wouldn't wipe my NOSE on most of them. It's sad to realize that the "Allen" heads some guys used to buy at WAlly's World were just this crap. I swear, though, I'm just about priced out of this sport. I do about everything as cheaply as it can be done, and I can still barely afford to hunt, anymore. I love the idea of buying $30.00 monolithic broadheads I can resharpen, but I actually lose plenty of arrows, too! There were even broadheads for wood arrows, which were obvious knock-offs of old Magnus and Eclipse. They seemed too light weight, but I grabbed some when they were cheap. Disappointingly. I could bend the triple-laminated tips with my fingers . I almost hate to say ANY of them AREN'T crap, because American businesses deserve our support, but the knock-off that rhyme with Snelix heads, and fake Dirt Crap heads, I wouldn't hesitate to use in a pinch. I'm sure the fake Snelix is garbage steel, but its 8/100 thick, and they say it's 420 stainless.

You answered your question about why mechanical broadheads don’t open. Theres a similar issue with liner-lock pocket knives. The mechanism is so flimsy that any torque or bend will lock up the mechanism and prevent it from opening

Appreciate Ranch overseeing. I wonder if you increased the weight of the polymer broadhead arrow to 3-4x that of the arrow used with all the other shots if it would have been a pass thru like the magnus? If so, there may be a case for weight over broadhead durability in extreme cases.

I have a package of those Cheapshot broadheads (100gr) usually carry one on my quiver for shooting close range at something I don't want to waste my good broadheads. Beyond 20 yards accuracty goes out the window. They seem to benefit from a heavier arrow and in my testing are horrible on crossbows as well.

Cool Video! On the polymer broadheads. Much like an old Bear Razor. Nock your arrow, line the broadhead up, so when you shoot, the broadhead is vertical,,, then get straight fletched arrows. They will be more accurate,,, but not much more.

It’s funny about the bone stuff with mechanicals… I had two that I trust. Even had hit bone with them in the past. Thorn and sevr. Both I have put through shoulder blade no issues and fast recoveries. I prefer sevr as thorn doesn’t replace blades and are a shoot once and once only basically now. Sevr you can replace the blades.

I’m all fairness, how times did you all shoot the shoulder before the single bevel blade? Seems like it was already Swiss cheese before that shot was made. I know it what you use and you know it works, but it really only had to break through one shoulder. The video was definitely fun to watch!
@TheHuntingPublic

Definitely shot the pig 4-5 times but shot other heads before and after that one. Single bevel was the only one that blew clear through. We also tested the single bevel on a hog last year vs many of the industry leading mechanicals and it consistently outperformed them when hitting heavy bone. That is only two tests though with a few dozen shots. Lots more to learn!

MUZZY. I use 100gr 3 blade, trocar tip. The best broadhead on the planet for the price. I have never once not had a pass through on whitetail. One time I took a shot at a deer quarter toward me. I know.... The arrow entered on the deers right brisket and exited out the back of his right hind quarter. I have video. It's possible to reuse the broadheads because the damage is almost nil. If anything one blade is dinged up. My grandfather had me using WASP broadheads to begin my journey of hunting, trying different things and learning.

Would be cool to see a little more investigation. Is there an arrow or even trad archery setup where the polymers fly consistently? Would simply lubing up and loosening the cheap mechanicals allow for more consistent function? Would a small glob of epoxy or JB weld hold the 3 blade together enough to survive being shot through the bone?
