For all the OCD people who need the lines etc. Husqvarna are developing mowers that can create lines - always making improvements. We have one of these for our garden and despite the cost it has saved us so much- no paying to have mown grass taken away, we can put the time spent lawn mowing into work or something more productive. Also our climate is so wet here in Ireland that we are waiting to (a) have time to mow which usually means weekends and (b) have a dry day. Those two rarely happen simultaneously here in this country so it means when we do get to mow the lawn it is super high and makes it a pain of a chore! The auto mower solves this problem as it can go out whenever you have it set in any weather. In summer, we set it to go out at night as the kids are often playing in the garden throughout the day. The neighbours have often got a fright seeing this beast going round the garden with headlights on!😂. Also the kids have named it Betsy and my 4 yr old boy loves to sit on her and go for a ride round the garden! This was one of the best purchases we ever made. I might be slightly biased though as my husband sells and installs them!🤫

I installed a Toro robotic mower about 15 yrs ago. I got down on my hands and knees and trenched out the grass to install the green perimeter wire with green stakes. I sectioned off my front yard, backyard 2 sections and both sides of the house. It mowed great for about 10 yrs until the battery packs wouldn't take a charge anymore. All the neighbors came out and we're awed that a robot was mowing my lawn. Toro had the same safety features, shut down mode and theft alarm. It was suggested that you mow every two to three days to maintain the mowing height. Yours of course is more sophisticated with programming and mowing height.
@mmmhmm41633 жыл бұрын
Wow 10 years is a great battery life. Were you able to replace the battery and keep it going?

Toro decided to get out of the robotic mower line so I couldn't get replacement batteries for the iMow. That was a shame as it did a great job mowing the lawn.

And you brought up a good point that I made in another comment: This technology is nothing new. The mower itself with it’s very small cutting blade is very basic (a spinning disk with 3-4 small blades). The tech, even with GPS and the guide wire is also very basic and has been used for years. You’re basically paying a huge premium so you can set it and forget it.

It took me a while to figure out where they were going "home" to as there were dome shaped huts of woven willow placed over the bases with an archway as a door. I have one a Robomow and is worth the price. Pros: keeps yard looking cut all the time, don’t have to buy gas and very energy efficient, I have time to do other things besides mow grass (time is precious), if you paid someone to mow your grass now you don’t have too ( in this case it will pay for itself), everything is made to be easily fixed by the user so need to take it to a shop (more money saving) Cons: it don’t mulch leaves so you will have to do it, you have to remove sticks, pine cones, kid toys etc...from yard before it runs, depending on your yard it can get stuck in muddy areas but it’s rare occurrence I love it and think the price is great for what it does. And like others said there are cheaper brands and will get cheaper over time.

I had the Honda version. It worked really well. Best if you have an established lawn that is contiguous. Also if your landscape is finished, meaning not going to change the border. I have several of them, to cover different (non-connected) parts of my garden. The whole lot cost the same as a top-of-the-range ride on. I previously had a 60" wide mower and it took me 1h30m to cut the lawn. Not long each week ... but I had to do it, and if it was raining on Friday evening I had to do it on Saturday morning if we had people coming ... now I have the mowers set to only work at night, so I never see them, but an unexpected bonus is that every morning when I get up the lawns all look freshly mowed ... they never get to that day-before-mowing look nor "it was raining and I didn't do it for a week!". Saves me 1h30m a week, I don't have to buy smelly Gas for it, zero maintenance, no oil changes, no trouble starting, no blade sharpening (replace the tiny blades twice a season), silent. Downsides: it won't cut along the edge (other brands can do that), so I use a small hand mower to do the edges. The software is dreadful. It all works fine, but it is really badly thought out, particularly if you have multiple units - choose the mower on screen, go to a different screen to see the settings, somewhere else to see the MAP of where it is stuck, can't change mower from either of those so back to the first screen to change mower. APP tells you there is an error, but to see the history of error messages you have to go to the mower ... and so on .. it could be so much better. My big one (same as shown in this video) is borderline for length of perimeter wire, as that also goes around my island beds and I have a number of paths rather than one big area. That causes erratic behaviour (rather than meaningful messages). Finding a break in the wire? Nightmare. The unit has 3 guide wires (direct from Garage to different points on the perimeter). It would be trivial to have the unit tell me which section the break was in ... but nope. Not even whether it is a guide wire or the perimeter wire that is bust. I bought an extra detector for that, but it doesn't work very well. But nothing would get me to change back to the old smelly ride on :)

We bought one of these about 18 months ago and absolutely love it! Super easy to install, we rented that machine to put in the line and did several acres in about 90 minutes. Easy to move the line if want to change it later. It is a bit of an upfront investment, but since we were paying a landscaper to mow... it has paid for itself already. We think it was totally worth the $. Just have to do the edges. We have scheduled it to run early in the morning so it's not in the way when we are out on the lawn. It even runs in the rain. My husband bought a dog house (Home Depot) for it and cut a wider hole for it to live in. :-)

Interesting info. Very curious to see how it cuts on spring & summer vigorous growth, looking forward to future update.

@@gardener6904 Laura said she ran it every 2 or 3 days or more often if you want; she also said it does microscopic cuts so when she ran her hand over the grass there was no long cuttings or clumps of grass; I am thinking the more often the automower is run it would be ok even if lawn wet; I am sure if it did not run for 1 week then the grass would be too tall and the clippings would be too much and clumping; I do not know; she did not address that;

The stripes is the first thing I noticed. I looks just like my carpet after my roomba ‘Robert’ cleans up.
@cathrinegilbertsson99463 жыл бұрын
These are very popular in Sweden we have a cheaper version and have had it for 4 years we love it.Ours goes up to a fence around the garden and turns so my husband does have to trim every month or when he thinks it needs trimmed as you can see the grass growing up the bottom of the fence , you can even buy little houses for them to go charge in and yes we have one and is painted the same color as the house ...lol....

How did your cats 🐈 Russell and Cheddar react to it? Also, if it starts raining before the mower finishes does it stop 🛑 or does the wet grass plug it up? It would be a game changer not having to mow weekly or worrying about the lawn while traveling.

I am surprised Russell didn't jump on it for a ride. That would make a great fun video.

I love your channel! Could you give us an update on how this is taking care of the lawn? I'd love to understand if it helped with fertilization with the constant mulching and how you handle the edging on the flower beds. My backyard is very similar to the area you are using your unit on so any info I am sure would be helpful to me and to many others!

I don't know about these mowers. I have a big lawn, if I had a smaller yard I might consider checking into one. I agree with you about burying the wire. I have mixed feeling about these types of mowers. Also I live on a farm & I do have a large yard like I mentioned earlier. For right now I will stick with the old fashioned mowers! 🙂✂️🌾💁♀️

Me dad has one! Really handy for those who aren’t so physically able.. He also carries it to the front lawn and it’s not that heavy at all to what I thought it would be. It can sometimes get stuck on an apple if one has fallen from a tree but overall it’s a gem! It is super quiet and yay for not having to buy petrol for a mower.
@dianebarlow15153 жыл бұрын
TheLandOfJonny if it gets stuck on an apple will it shut itself off or sit there until the battery runs down?
@TheLandOfJonny3 жыл бұрын
It should simply shut down, provided the wheels weren’t continually turning ,.. if that were to happen the battery could go flat/flatten. If the battery were to go flat you’d have to lift it and manually put it back in the charging station, where it ought to recharge, but it may not which would mean a new battery.. Never happened to my dad, it always apart from once, shut down. Batteries should normally last 3, or 4 years. 👍 hope that helps :)

Very interesting...but I think with all the technology out there they could program it to mow in straight lines instead of all over the place. Plus if it mowed in straight lines seems like it would take less wear and tear on the battery. Thanks Laura for all your informative videos!!!!!

I would love to have a self mowing Lawnmower, we bought the robot vacuum cleaner and I love it. I have osteoporosis and I love doing my gardening, mowing, and cleaning my house but then I’m in a lot of pain for days. I believe they have other brands out there that are more affordable. Thank you for sharing, enjoy!

I’ve seen these units used in Edinburgh in a hillside that would be too dangerous to mow and in Pisa in a large flat lawn that would free up the gardener for other things. Very fun if you don’t enjoy mowing (I, however, love to mow).
@pamelagraham31003 жыл бұрын
Now that would be worth saving money for! We are a family of technology and save and buy anything that would give us time to do other things. The Jetsons used to be a dream of our family and here we are, so very awesome!

Well Laura, I'm so glad you are going to enjoy your new toy. For myself, our neighbor has one & I find it to be very annoying, or maybe it's my neighbors that are annoying with that mower. That thing runs ALL night long. The headlights drive my dogs crazy, & I get that funny feeling when I see the lights coming through the yard. The mower can get hung up on a piece of anything & will cut in place until you move it. Their yard does look nice I will admit, but for me, I enjoy getting out on our mower, feeling the sun & breeze on my skin. The smell of fresh cut grass. My life feels better I think by doing myself instead of everything being so automated....but I'm from the old school. Congrats my dear.

The lines in the grass a regular mower makes look so much nicer. Whether you go back and forth or in circles... I can't see being very excited about this at all.

We have the same one here in Sweden and it's a godsent, untill your cats stop being afraid of it..... 😅 😬Had some close calls but its been fine for 5years. Here in Sweden it got more common to have one, and as we robot owners here do, I can strongly recommend that you name your baby...i mean robot grass mower... 😅😉It's kind of a thing that you have to do!
@annebeck22083 жыл бұрын
I read on several reviews of robotic mowers that Mole hills can be an issue if you have lots of moles...that stopped us...even removing 5-6 moles a season only pauses the mole hills as new ones move in.

So cool! It looks like a little car. My neighbor had one of their earlier models and sometimes it would hit a patch of lawn that was soft/wet it’s wheel would spin and not have traction and he’d give it a slight push to get it going again. But otherwise it did a nice job.

I live on 5.25 acres and not all of it is lawn. This might be the answer for my space. Having to invest in multiple units is a drawback; but, comparing multiple units to a 70” zero turn mower well now were talking apples to apples.
