Is it worth it to spend $75 on tree pruners or buy $7 ones? What are the differences between the two, and can we justify spending 3/4 of $100 on one pair of pruners? Let's find out!

@@jamesprigioni I love them. I got them at Costco a couple of years ago, probably $25-ish. I've always had great results with Fiskars. I have some loppers that are 25-30 years old that still amaze me. They used to be made in England, I think.

A fantastic subject to cover. For years I used cheap (or mid range) never really had a issue when kept really sharp. But I did notice the cheap wear down quicker when sharpening. A good quality product is a investment for any budding garden enthusiast.

I bought £0.50 (60 US cents) pruners at the supermarket on clearance from £1 or £2. Same springs as my Felco 2, 8 if and when the time comes that a Felco spring breaks or is lost I just need the springs to last a few days to order a new Felco spring. In the meantime they are just in my kitchen drawer for chopping up chicken bones to put in the compost caddy. Another cheap pair sits in the greenhouse for chopping off ddead plants in winter to save cleaning my Felcos or Tobisho. I don't want to bad use or leave my good tools in the greenhouse.

I love watching your gardening channel and can’t wait till next spring to try out somethings.. Maybe you can answer a question on lemon tree plants. I started a lemon plant with seeds from a lemon that I had seen on line. First it doesn’t smell like lemon like they said my whole would smell like but my question is it is about two and a half feet tall and don’t know if I am supposed to cut it down or just keep going with it. Also should I plant it outside in the summer and if I do will it make it through the winter? (Live in Illinois). Any suggestions please. Thank you 🙋🏼

I have probably another 10 pairs of pruners that I let the high school students use on my Christmas tree farm, but they don't get to touch my Felcos. A good pair of secateurs go a long way, especially in a food FOREST. I'm a cheap person myself and can't justify $75 on secateurs. However, I got some from my brother for Christmas that is pretty high-end compared to mine. His make a nice clean cut with almost no force it's crazy! The cheapo ones I have are like dull and kind of push/pinch the three together rather than severing it. I highly suggest if you have a food forest you invest in some good secateurs, its night and day compared to the cheap Chinese ones that are dull and flimsy. Awesome vid as always James, I always get a good feeling, oooh yeah when I watch your videos. ^^

If the branch is a bit thicker don't just squeese harder but also move the tool up and down so it can cut easier. When you are using a knife to cut something you make a back and forth motion, instead of only putting pressure on it without any motion.

The nice part of the more expensive prunerrs are how they hold up over time. Cheap primers work fairly well when they are brand new, but they quickly loose the edge and lock switches can snap off, handles can crack and blades can separate. Sometimes i screw up and leave my primers out in the garden by accident. Exposure to weather will immediately rust the cheap tool, where the pricey one is more forgiving.
@dustman96
@dustman96 4 жыл бұрын
A good pruner makes such a big difference. A pruner with a thin blade made out of quality material is the way to go. Most cheap pruners have a thick blade with a greater bevel angle on the cutting part of the blade, making it much more difficult.

The ars cut fresh green super Young soft stems without any crushing. You can get on ebay usually for around $40, but need to be patient as they come from Japan. I have nothing to do with the company just love the pruners. You might even put your felcos in your pocket after u try the ars. I'm happy to bring mine down to test if you have any interest. Perhaps you aren’t very fluent in steel, but the felco is high carbon steel. The felco heat treats the blade so it’ll hold an edge longer. The benefit to carbon steel is edge retention and ease of sharpening. Down fall is it rusts so you need to keep it clean and keep it oiled. China carbon steel is probably a super cheap low grade of carbon steel.

Have you seen a quite old saw, how it's cutting the tree?!? You don't apply the force so that you break the saw in two. The goal is to cut the tree in two :) Actually, I can't buy a $75 version for some reasons, among them, the shipping alone would be more than a pair of the cheap ones...so I learned how to correctly cut with the poor version of pruners.
