Drake, as brilliant as ever! You remind me of me when I was at boarding school in the UK. I was foolishly "trusted" (!) with the keys to one of the labs because I'd volunteered to look after the flora and fauna therein (eg. rats, meeses, locusts, cockroaches, stick insects, crickets, bats and cricket bats etc) But our goofy science master (Dr Doug xxx, MA Chemistry, Oxford) hadn't bothered to remove the small key to the "dangerous chemicals" cupboard. Needless to say, I tentatively explored said 'out of bounds' repository, and managed to deplete the stocks of quite a few of the reagents contained therein. And recklessly oblivious to and ignorant of the lethal dangers, secretly mixed this and that behind the cricket pavillion on Sunday afternoons. Needless to say, the billowing fumes, oxidative sparking and ferociously explosive flames were a sight to behold. Indeed, the intense purples, greens, browns and reds of the undoubtedly highly toxic clouds of various deadly gases that erupted - accompanied by intense heat, noise, flames and the invariable explosive disintegration of beakers and flasks - would have impressed the defence industry boffins, especially the manufacturers of chemical warfare pyrotechnics. I very nearly set fire to the venerable cricket pavilion itself with, if I recall correctly, a particularly pungent brew of conc. sulphuric acid poured onto one or more of potassium permanganate, iodine and potassium chlorate, resulting in a spontaneous redox explosion, potentially of severe risk to life and limb.... Back in the day ('70s) didn't all school labs feature big brown bottles and jars of toxic carcinogenic stuff like toluene, 0.880M ammonia, potassium chromate, carbon tetrachloride, mercury, hydrogen peroxide, formaldehyde, bromine salts... picric acid...etc etc ..?? Anyway, the product of my favourite illicit mixture was and remains the simplest to prepare: nitrogen triiodide. Great bang for buck and a nice cloud of purple iodine. But seriously, school was bloody dangerous and one was lucky to get out alive! Most of the deadly reagents we handled with curiosity, gay abandon and naivity have long since been banned outright - boring - but health and safety and the preservation of the ozone layer have rightly prevailed. Such were the carefree days of innocent recklessness, surreptitious experimentation and schoolboy bomb making!

The high amount of lethal and/or carcinogenic cold remedies in the book probably did poison people. In part 3 of the series, apparently the books authors had the silly idea to use a strong Lewis acid with a potent oxidizer in an organic solvent, all quite toxic, as a cold remedy. When the Lewis acid involved was not diluted, the addition of the organic solvent to the two other ingredients instantly proved to be hypergolic, resulting in the beaker's contents spontaneously igniting and vigorously so. When the Lewis acid was diluted, and a piece of aluminum foil was dropped in the mixture, the mixture proved to be highly corrosive, oh and a fire hazard. And this was touted 90 years ago as a cold remedy, despite it being highly toxic and reactive. Also, the book featured other cold remedies containing massive amounts of carcinogens. One had a mix of chloroform, formaldehyde, and ether, plus isopropanol. Chloroform and formaldehyde are carcinogenic, ether will put one to sleep, and isopropanol is not something you want in your body. It's toxic. Let's just say that any physicians who treated patients with these carcinogenic and reactive remedies probably ended up breaking their Hippocratic Oaths unknowingly. Assuming that the preparation of these supposed remedies didn't sicken them, or worse. Also, the recipe that fills holes at the cost of Hydrogen Sulfide production probably poisoned some repair technician 90 years ago fixing metal. Or, their clients. Also, the toxic methods for getting rid of pests in this book probably poisoned homeowners. Given the sheer poison hazard of many of these recipes, it's honestly more than likely that someone followed a dangerous recipe and it didn't go well for them, ending in them getting poisoned.
