Actually as a pharmacy student, I can confirm that we take a compounding class, where we use a mortar and pestle for a variety of purposes to make products that are not available commercially. While many pharmacies do not offer compounding services, my pharmacy does. I used a mortar and pestle just this week to make a suspension for a baby, so can confirm there is still a purpose for it.

That was not real ashes that was charcoal. Ashe Is the Gray stuff at the bottom of the fire pit. There is a huge difference because charcoal is elemental carbon but ash has potassium in it. In terms of chemistry and cleaning power there's a big difference. This is why people made their soap from ash

There is actually scientific backing to the urine and ashes as cleaning products. The ashes contains potassium hydroxide also known as lye which is a very powerful alkaline cleaning agent and is used in many places still to make "lye soap" urine, especially old urine contains a lot of ammonia which is a cleaning and also disinfecting agent that you can buy in the store. Still weird, but ...now you know!

Same for the cat poop and vinegar. They likely used normal vinegar, but the clue was they should use "strong vinegar". You need to use 20% vinegar which you can find labeled as cleaning vinegar, not the standard 5% variety. 20% vinegar will remove hair.

Guys...you did this wrong! That is not ash...it is coal! Ash is the grey very fine dust the wood makes after burning. You can mix ash with water or urine in this case to make sodium hydroxide, also known as lye. It takes 3 days for the chemical reaction to take place (cold reaction) and you only use the clear liquid after the sediment settles or you can boil it until you get a frothing clear liquid. Lye was used and is still used for lots of stuff: washing hair, clothes and floors but also as medicine for treating stomach aches, acidity and light poisoning. As i said...lye is still used in bio-products like detergents, soaps, cleaning products, being a very eco-friendly substance.

Sorry guys, you didn’t do these correctly. It would have been good to consult a historian. ie: the “ashes” you used were actually just ground charcoal, not actual wood ash. Wood ash is white and has a different chemical structure. So, what they were looking for in the urine-ash compound was just lye and ammonia. These are commonly used cleaning agents still used today.

Tanning was in the same vein, as they used urine to strip the hair and fat off the hides. I can imagine the ashes being a good abrasive scrubbing agent and the urine eating away at the stains. Also, the cat poop, if 100% dried, would turn into a solid with your hair encased in it, so pulling it off like a modern-day waxing bandage could possibly work. I've heard ancient romans used to put urine on their teeth to whiten them... And in some cultures it's been used to dye clothes. Urine was even used to make gunpowder, and had many other uses as well throughout history. But yeah, medieval times were definitely nasty. "Who's that then? I dunno. Must be a king. Why? I think they have the winner selected _before_ they mail the T-shirts out. That way if you didn't purchase, they will already know you're the winner and just mail it to you. I get what you're saying though 👌
