Awesome video as always, would you mind testing out blackjacks and saps in general? There's quite a lot to cover about them once you discovered them. Getting the mask on chin first should possibly help with the beard issue, alternatively full head masks like the classic Russian gp-5 will probably help to get a good seal easily despite a beard for example. In general surplus military issue gasmasks should be about as good and are less expensive

When my Dad was undergoing training in the Royal Navy in the late 70's/early 80's, he remembers being locked in an exposure chamber with CS gas. It was a rite of passage in the Royal Navy. You had to attempt to navigate the chambers, only allowed to begin applying your gas mask as the room began to fill with CS gas. Dad remembers it being one of the worst experiences of his life, and still blames it for his lingering claustrophobic tendencies.

They do it still in every branch of the military. You go in with masks on, the room starts to fill up and you need to 1 by 1 take off the mask then you go outside and try to eat and drink. I've heard it's absolute hell the first time but you can build an resistance to CS gas over time

@@MrDylanm842 Ah really? That's interesting! Dad remembers it being claustrophobic, intense, sickening and oppressive. But he was in the chamber exposed to the CS gas for a considerable length of time - which probably wouldn't pass 'health and safety guidelines' these days ha-ha! I mean this is important because tear gas isn't exactly a discriminatory weapon, there's been multiple cases in the Portland area of the cops just tear gassing entire neighborhoods during protests. There was one case where they ended up managing to launch tear gas into daytime traffic, which ended about how you would expect having a bunch of people in cars suddenly unable to see. More people should have gas masks considering you could literally get tear gassed while in your home near a protest.

You know when I first saw this I thought , " Oh no , you've lost it, you've fallen into the deep end of the pool and we've lost you" but actually, after what s happened here in the last few years a good smoke filtering mask is actually a good idea. In 2017 we were evacuated because of forest fire, caused by people target shooting about 10 mile from our home. ( target shooting is the official word I'm thinking the broken glass, hot sun not so much the actual shooting ) Also not to far north of us an entire town was lost ( almost entire ) and many people had to drive out thru the fire . So really a mask of the type you are holding would not have hurt to have.

I went through the gas chamber in basic training, and "refresher" training after that. Military CS gas is not to be messed with. It's flammable, and is heavier than air, meaning that if you're hiding in a basement or other low place, you will die from asphyxiation if it doesn't burst into flame. It also causes your skin to burn, your eyes to tear up, and your snot locker to cut loose. Very unattractive. I've not been exposed to pepper spray, but if it's anything like ghost peppers, it's a walk in the park compared to CS. Heads up: if you've had any issues with breathing (pneumonia, covid, etc..) you will still feel some painful effects even with a functioning mask and filter. Experience talking.

Their products will protect you, but they are severely overpriced. For example, the Mira CM-7M(which is just a Mira brand name for the Czech made OM-90 mask, which in turn is just a Czech copy of the British Avon S10) costs 275USD, while on eBay, an original OM-90 with it’s full kit, costs half that price. Both of these will protect you equally(if both forms a good seal). The only difference is one is very overpriced. I’ve seen quite a number of people think Mira gas masks(professionals call gas masks “air purifying respirators” or APR) are manufactured in the US, and thus justifies the price. Unbeknownst to them, all of Mira’s APRs are made in the Czech Republic by a Czech company called “GuZu”

Hey Mike, love the content. I messaged you on IG one time about fighting on stairs just posting to help algorithms, see if this is a better medium of communication, remind or bug ya. It's been a pretty common string through unplanned fights that I've noticed and never seen a video on. I've personally been slammed on/down them a couple times and would rather avoid that again(though I think I know what to do now). Many houses, atleast in the north or the ones I have lived aside from those in the artic circle, have two sets right behind the door, one up one down. Other locations you commonly find them where altercation are more likely include public parks, hiking trails, parking garages, schools, apartments, hotels, and venues(bars and clubs). They are also a location where you can actually be very reasonably, or more likely to be forced to defend yourself. They are usually confined spaces(some parks have open concepts without a dangerous fall) where in which many of your options of retreat can also be dangerous. In the home(or apartment sometime you let people in or out through the fire escape) if you are trying to remove someone or you are answering your door to surprise force you can find yourself retreating, thrown or pushed backwards. In the multi-level house it causes you to quickly make a decision(or plan) do you attempt to go upward, dealing with a higher center of gravity, sharp edges and grappling difficulty or down causing more dangerous foot placement, instability, susceptibility to kicks, gravitational weigh disadvantage and a potentially dangerous fall but faster retreat, lower CoG. My ideal video would discuss what you would prefer for different scenarios/skill sets, up, down, or to get side to side(which I had be effective once in a two-walled stairway), and any tricks to use to hold your ground (I guess dont be a pussy, wrestling and angles) or tips when that's not the case. I guess this isn't exclusive to Mike, are their any tricks anyone has, advice, theories or quality videos on the subject?

8:10 Advice for future videos, break a twig with lot of leaves in it, spruce trees most ideal. You can use that to brush away most tear gas remnants from the mask and your clothes. Then do a quick 50 meter lap with the gasmask to brush off the rest. Or this is what we did in the army anyway, to prevent what you just experienced from happening.

Easiest seal test drill for these. Blow out hard shout gas gas gas to clear the speach diaphragm. Cover the filter with your palm and try to inhale. If you get any air at all it's a bad seal

Mike, they make what's called a spray sock. You put it on under the respirator so your face hair doesn't mess with the seal. They cost like two dollars at any paint supply store.

But would that wick liquids under your mask? I don't know if I'd trust that in an NBC environment. I was thinking petroleum jelly might be a good choice?

My buddy and I made a shitty video showing how to make your own masks, and testing them. Had to settle for using pepper gel to test, which isn't very high fidelity. We've been meaning to try them with something like pepper balls. I liked seeing how well the pepper balls effected Mike vs Jay, gives me more confidence in using those to test aerosols.

Great video! Those mask are solid, they worked well even though ya'll both have beards. If you do more mask test and need a better fit, you can try and do what a lot of firefighters do and rub Vaseline over your beard and where the seal forms.

I just made a connection about why beards went of of fashion for a while and clean shaven was the thing. I think it happened during world war one when all the soldiers had to be ready to put on their gas masks so they had to remove their beards, and after the war clean shaven stuck as the trend.

We tested this in the military by having tear gas in a container and then we went in and sat in the container for some time (can't remember how long) with gas masks. It was some diluted version but I remember having an exposed wrist and it started itching like crazy afterwards.

A large factor in effectiveness of these filters is the filtration rating. A Multi-gas cartridge will stop its rated protections, but a P100 will protect and also prevent small particulate from non protected threats. 3M Multi-gas P100 is probably the best general purpose filter. Another large factor is WHERE you are hit. Of course, even with a rated filter, it's very likely you will be effected when it's sprayed directly on the vent intake. In more realistic scenarios where your arm, legs, or people around you are directly hit, the vapors hitting you will be much less. Spraying it like paint on a board won't do anything, you WANT aresol suspended in the air, not wait for oil to evaporate. A fine mist is what police want. Sometimes, a stream or gel is wanted if you can get a direct hit, but that is more rare. Generally a mist is most effective.

A good way to check your seal on the mask is putting your hand over the filter intake and inhale to see if any air is leaking in.

We had Emergency Escape Breathing Devices aboard the aircraft carrier in the Navy. They produce oxygen chemically. I had access to lots of spaces on the ship for whatever reasons and knew where there extra EEBDs. Breathing oxygen when you're hungover works great.
