That's because it is specifying a certain kind of staff, as opposed to it being a quarterstaff, jo staff, or whatever else. Hell, the even more technical term for it in Japanese is "rokushakubo," which is even more redundant in Japanese, as it means "6 shaku (equivalent to a foot) bo." I dunno about you, but I've never seen a Japanese or Okinawan bo of another length. Those tend to be hanbo or jo staves.

The one understanding lacking in these types of videos: What is the weapon that you most likely would have access to in a combat situation? A staff is found everywhere: broom, rake, pole, etc. Carrying a kubotan is much better than not carrying one. Knowing how to use one is the key. Training with them is. Knowing how to use a staff is much better than not knowing. Knowing them adds options that you wouldn't have otherwise. Having options is what wins fights and battles. Training is about being prepared for them.

This! I was going to say this but you beat me by a year. Spears are so hilariously good in hallways, you just jab fast, erratically, and at different heights, and man, nobody wants to go down that hallway. There's just something really unpleasant about someone making stabby movements at you if you don't have something ranged or something good to block with, and can't dodge to either side. And even if it's blunt, very few people are going to go "okay, I'll eat the end of a wooden broomstick to the ribs: after I close in, I'll have the advantage. This is fine." Maybe it's just me, but there's a instinct "eh, let's not" that I feel when it comes to be stabbed, even with blunt things.

Staff is fine for self-defense if you have it available in an open area. The benefit of the staff is that you can use it like an extension of your fists or like sword. Holding a staff in thirds gives you about 2 feet of extra reach over your normal fists, but with much, much more variation for how and where to strike, plus you can add fakes, joint manipulations, thrusts, or switch to a long sword-style strike at any time. A person isn't going to just flippantly block a staff strike without taking damage. People just feel silly swinging a stick around, but the fact is that it's probably the most fundamental melee weapon in human history. As for portability or practicality, it's just a tool for a particular job. I hike often, so it's a natural fit for that. Same for rucking. That said, if you want something more portable and practical for daily or more city-like applications, then a jo is probably better since it's basically the size of a walking stick which is far less conspicuous if you are treating it as a walking stick. Finally, buy a rattan staff with the skin intact. Rattan is highly durable, flexible, and lightweight. I have been using rattan for my staff of choice for a while, and even practicing by beating it against an oak fence post, then the post looks beat up, but the rattan staff barely has a scratch.

Nice to finally see a Bo staff video. Personally I prefer the Jo Staff as its a bit more dynamic and there are more options in a smaller space. Plus I think it better without the taper as a standard one can generate more power. The taper is good for spinning and more flashy moves.

@c.m.s87824 жыл бұрын
You mentioned an important point when you compared the Bo with escrima. Both are not weapons you usually carry on you in your daily life (at least where I live). But knowing how to use sticks as extensions of your limbs can give you an edge and make you a more (mentally) flexible fighter. Training the arnis double sticks for instance thought me to respond to the angle of an attack instead of the "type " of attack (haymaker punch, forehand or backhand swing with a stick etc). It is best to see it as an add on to your arsenal.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart9354 жыл бұрын
I like staffs cuz they're easier to obtain than most other weapons...its a stick. Lol. Also, it's a ranged weapon, meant to keep people at length. Loved the hurricanrana from mike. That was totally unexpected. Yet also not surprising. I've always wanted to try one, but was afraid it would backfire and I'd get slammed straight or my weight would make them collapse before I finish the swing. That smaller staff was pretty cool too. That's something I'd likely get.

Personally, the reason I opt for staff as a self defense weapon other than the abundance of it around is the balance. A well made staff carries a proper balance on the center and it resonates well with the movement of the body. It also provides an almost perfect defense range considering you can thrust and deliver two blows in one motion. Plus it's not decimating your opponent and just cripple them so you can get away. To me, bo staff is a pacifist weapon entirely made to protect than to kill. Also, I enjoy staff cause it's modular, put a small knife on top and you have a spear. Either way, my utmost reason for its preference is mainly due to its balance.

The bo staff was a Shaolin combat weapon. They would bring their "walking sticks" and immediately become an armed army. They fought armies with swords and shields and the bo staff allowed them to strike from a further distance. And the same fighting principles of hand to hand combat applied - finding open targets, taking advantage of an opponent's imbalance, instantaneous transitions from defense to offense, etc. It is a fierce striking tool. With almost no movement, you can deliver an injuring blow to the head, body, or legs. One strike would injure and then you could finish the opponent and take him completely out of the fight, or move to the next opponent. The bo staff is also an energy training tool - apart from its striking and defense capabilities - relaxed endless spiraling movements allow energy flow. The bo staff is also a balance training tool in the same way tight rope walkers use a balancing pole. You can hold the bo staff in front of you, lift one foot and stay balanced forever (as if you were holding onto the back of a chair - it keeps you balanced). After a few days of that training - you can let go of the staff and balance on one foot as if you were still holding the staff. The bo staff is useless inside your home with furniture and limited space (not to mention scratching the ceiling) - but as a combat weapon it may be the most effective in terms of injuring and incapacitating an opponent with a single strike from a safe distance, while also being an effective defense in blocking attacks. In the hands of a trained fighter, the bo staff is deadly effective.

I am constantly striking my ceiling with my bo. Occasionally with my sword. I can't practice outside or someone would report me. So I mostly train from a low horse stance to avoid the ceiling strikes. It helps that I'm only 5'7".

This is an interesting video. I've been watching hema videos where they discuss long weapons versus sword. Long weapons usually win all the time. You don't even need to spin a staff to make it dangerous. Just poking straight can be bad enough and keep selling at a distance.
@Stephen_Curtin4 жыл бұрын
You guys kinda discount holding the staff near one end and using it's full reach, but that's exactly how a lot masters from medieval and renaissance Europe used their staffs and I'm guessing they knew what they were doing.
@SenseiSeth4 жыл бұрын
well, i mean I would get we've learned more since then. also, they probably had something sharp and pointy at the end!
@Stephen_Curtin4 жыл бұрын
@@SenseiSeth I doubt we've learned a whole lot since then seeing as how people actually used staff weapons back then, if anything we know less now. Also I was talking about staffs not spears or polearms, so no pointy ends.

The bo staff was my introduction to martial arts and let me tell you what, its an amazing starting weapon. You can learn how to fight with anything starting from a staff. Wanna do a twohanded weapon, hold one end of the staff with both hands, want to learn to punch? Two hands palms down near the center of the staff. I could go on, its just amazing!

Instead of blunt ends on that retractable staff, if you replace it with pointy ends and maybe a bit of edge closer to the tip it would be even better.

In the discussion about the collapsable staff, you didn't explore the social acceptability of deploying it. Scenario: Someone attacks you while walking home from the market. you use that and successfully defend yourself. Knowing your own community, will the use of this or any weapon be acceptable? I think that that is what makes even a walking stick unacceptable these days. At least, here in L.A.
@SenseiSeth4 жыл бұрын
yea i think the dilemma of "did me deploying this weapon START the fight?!" is a big topic
@no-trick-pony4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how to deploy it I guess.. Like, if you just hold it vertically in your fist and shake it down once to deploy one end and than pretend it's a walking stick, nobody will probably care much. If you do the "baton-im-gonna-beat-the-shit-out-of-you" move to deploy it, it's probably not acceptable.

@regalisexa38694 жыл бұрын
It could possibly be effective if you have practical experience with it, understand your range in the enviornment and have enough grappling experience to disarm it from them in case of a struggle (aka they try to grab it). I can see why you ranked flashlight above it, sure it has greater damage potentional, but that potention comes at a cost, the maneuverability and the concealibility as well, which means that a greater emphasis has be to placed with my skill in general (whipping out and extending it) not just with that weapon but the grappling associated with it, with a flashlight you have the element of surprise, and opportunity with a greater range, and not having to attack; that's not even going into the legal repercussions. Don't get me wrong, I bloody love the bo staff (it along with the sword were my first weapons I trained with), but disadvantages make it a weapon that while probably readily available (brooms, pipes, others) need a lot more skill to wield than say a flashlight. Anyways end of rant, hope everyone's having a good day👍

staff is 100% my fave too. I’ll have to work on a “how to ACTUALLY make a bo staff work” lol
@dirtydan27212 жыл бұрын
I would never swing with a broom when in a fight, instead I would level it with the face and make quick jabs to the nose area. A broom will snap and not hurt people too bad if swung, if you get jabbed in the face a few times it's gonna hurt and do serious damage even with those little plastic brooms.

Chinese styles have this way of using the staff were you hold it near the ends (at least one hand) and then when you swing it you get your hands together on one end. Either the lower one or the upper one it depends if you want to hit donwards or upwards (though you can do it sideways too). It's kinda like swinging the whole thing like a bat but faster and you're more covered. From a certain point of view it looks like the staff is getting longer as you swing it.

I guess if you really want a staff-like weapon you could fake a limp and walk around with a really long cane, use it like a quarterstaff. Come to think of it, have you & Mike reviewed canes as possible self-defense weapons? I know Cold Steel makes a few that are built to take heavy hits. They even have a 59 inch "walking staff." 1:24 And lol next time you catch Mike doing a Dempsey Roll you gotta add that sound effect.
