Yep - the paper/foil version is way easier to make than the brass foil alone. The paper acts as a clamp when making them,

Looks like the real thing. I ve read the Boxer cartridge was made of 0,003 inches think rolled messing sheet (2 1/9layers) with paper inlayer and an drawn brass ground plate. Yours looks like one

Hello Volunteer Rifleman. I have a question… I often hear it said that the minie ball increased the effective range of the rifles that shot it from 100 yards with a ball to around 800 yards with the minie ball. Is this extreme increase in performance true? If so why? I also wonder, if it is true, could I drop a minie ball in a modern hawken rifle replica and expect the same extreme performance increase? I am aware that some manufacturers make conical projectiles intended for the hawken but none of them give the type of performance boost the minie ball gave to the civil war rifles. Thank you

It is not the transition from ball to Minnie that created the vast increase in range. It is the combined transition from smoothbore musket with round ball to rifled musket with Minnie that created the increase. Now, that said, round ball has greater wind resistance than the conical minie which will get you better down range performance but in your hawken, you are already starting from the rifle advantage.

Barry are the reloadable?

Not in the traditional sense. I should be able to reuse the base, but the foil walls are not reusable. The point of the exercise is to learn how the originals were made. For reloadable, I will stick with the modern full brass 24 gauge shot shell conversions.
