She’s lovely..I started my pencil colouring with the cheaper ones and found the same..now I have my Faber Castells in water and normal I have never looked back..these look like they are low on pigment,they may just be dye based.,going by how the colours not getting deeper .It’s great showing the others though.I saved for a year for my first set ..Was shaking when I opened the tin and smelt the pencils..But boy oh bow they were beautiful to use.Easier on my poor hands too..I don’t need to press just build.I find it relaxing using pencils ..But yes a small piece can take me 6/8 hrs to do ..A4 pieces days and days ..Stay safe 🥰

Thank you Christine ♥️ They were lovely for single saturated colours and melted well. Even before the water was added they were ok too. Oooooh but layering really hard with these. I think they had a lot of water soluble filler to pigment ratio. The Faber Castell pencils are just lovely aren't they? Watercolour or regular. Those and Derwent pencils are some of my favourite 😍 I love building layers and it's one of those mediums that are just easy to get started on a piece with, pack away and pick back up. That's a good thing though as this medium take me forever to use lol

When you said Lidl I thought you were saying "little" :) I think these pencils activate much better than Artist Loft and other cheaper brands here in the US. Love the artwork you did with them.
@KatyRylesArt4 жыл бұрын
Hehe it does sound like little 😁 They activated quite well especially with the swatches. But when it came to layering it felt like it just wasn't happening. We don't have artist's loft here but it sounds comparable to the works or hobby craft here in the UK.

I usually pass on any pencils they have other than graphite pencils lol never have much luck with them. most of the other supplies I've tried from Lidls have been ok though and you really cant say no to the price, especially if the supply is for a kid

Thank you fuzzydragons ❤️ the graphite pencils are good to be fair! I had the wooden box set from a couple of years ago and they were nice to work with. I've still got the charcoal (although we all know how I feel about charcoal lol) Ive picked up some really nice acrylic paint brushes which have been fab to work with too. I haven't seen them this year but they had some 2 packs of paint markers and they included this gorgeous white shimmering colour! I think it's hit or miss really what you pick up and what the expectations are. I'll always keep an eye out for anything interesting.

Great image, but it's a shame you were not as impressed with these pencils as you were with the Aldi ones. I love your reviews of products like this, they are always informative and your artistic skill shines through (even when the product doesn't perform as you had hoped). Thank you sooooo much for sharing.

Thank you Janet ♥️ I was a little surprised that I wasn't as impressed with them. They weren't terrible but I wouldn't want them to be my first experience if this medium either. I think they would be fine for kids to take to school (and maybe that's who they are aiming them at) Ahhh they swatched so nicely too. But using them for this piece was a lot of hard work. Especially the layering. I thought that I would be able to layer the pencils evenly and maintain the vibrancy. It was quite nice to be using pencils for a change and to do a video on them. I bought some Mars lumograph black pencils recently and I'm loving sketching with those. I may have to do a video using them in the new year 😍 I'm glad you enjoyed and found it helpful ♥️♥️

The painting turned out lovely despite the issues with the pencils. I think that cheaper watercolour pencils tend to be more difficult to use than higher quality ones. I use them for sketching out paintings sometimes. For young kids the IKEA ones are great, they are really pigmented and bright.

Thank you niña fairy ♥️ ahhhh IKEA! Back in the days of wandering shops. I think I may give them a try if anything ever opens back up again.

@@KatyRylesArt he he, one of the good things about not being able to go shopping is I'm making better use of the supplies I have. Postage to here is usually expensive.

Pencils - whatever type - seem to be a bit of a problem with both Aldi and Lidl (by the way, that "i" usually is pronounced like the "ee" in week or week or... at least here in Germany 😁). And even thoughI l l really can make do with cheap art supplies, these often felt way too hard for me. I'd probably rather get Staedtler's (they got a nice student quality set of 12 to start with), the student line of Faber -Castell's (Color Grip, I believe is what they are called. They got these little rubbery dots so they're better to hold, since you can't just slide of) or Koh- I - Noor's (not a German brand, but Czech. I got the Progressos, they are woodless, which I love, since: creating less waste) 🥰 hey, but at least the tin seems almost sturdy, I use the one from the last Aldi pencils I got for storing loose watercolour pans that don't regularly sit in one of my palettes 😅
@KatyRylesArt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you LunaBianca ♥️ I think because they are in a supermarket they perhaps aren't handled as carefully as in a craft/art store which is why the leads broke easily. I'm a fan of cheap art supplies if they work well. When I was a student I really couldn't afford any premium materials and the staedtler pens were always a good option for me! I think my favourite watercolor pencils are the Derwent inktense. Soft to sketch with and pack a punch when water is added. I do like Faber Castell and koh I noor coloured pencils. They are lovely to work with and blending soft layers. Hehe I think my accent when pronouncing Lidl may come in to play there. Most of the UK probably pronounce it correctly 😁
@LunaBianca18053 жыл бұрын
@@KatyRylesArt Don't beat yourself up, I love your accent 😘 I just tend to jump in with little hints on how to pronounce my Native tongue right wheneverI notice someone having trouble with that, so that's more like a little stupid habit of mine rather than any of your fault 😅 I'd probably fare much worse if you throw English words at me that I don't know and that even though I started learning that like 20"years ago 😂

@KatyRylesArt4 жыл бұрын
Thank you NIMA art 😊 they swatched beautifully as individual colours and perhaps for areas where colour would be blocked in they would be fine. Reworking areas by adding pencil and leaving it or activating it with water proved hard and somehow didn't have the same vibrancy as the swatches. I think they would be ok for kids but in my opinion for an artist/beginner wanting to try them they don't quite perform as more familiar brands would.
@fathobbit61604 жыл бұрын
They don’t look bad at all and good dissolving qualities.
@KatyRylesArt4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Fat Hobbit ♥️ they melted beautifully when swatching and the pencil marks alone went smoothly on the first laydown. When it came to adding over pre coloured areas it felt like it wouldn't take without really pressing down and potentially damaging the paper. It was weird how that happened. If I'd just done a 1 layer picture I probably wouldn't have a different opinion. In a side note. I did really like the tin and the illustration on the front 😁
@fathobbit61604 жыл бұрын
@@KatyRylesArt yes. They started off well but didn’t perform in the end. However given the price I think they were not bad. Thanks for posting your test of this product I always look forward to your videos.

Thank you Linnzy 🙂 Ahh! I feel a bit bad now. But your experience may be different to mine. As you saw they swatched beautifully. However they were really hard to layer and work into an art piece. I'll more than likely give these away to a local charity based art group as I personally don't see myself using them again.

Hi Katy 😊 Considering you were not keen on those watercolor pencils, you created a really lovely piece I’m sorry I’ve not been able to comment as often on your videos at that moment because my phone needs a new battery, it’s an Apple one which means it’s more difficult - I’m waiting on a gadget to be delivered to me that’s going to make it easier, apparently. Amazing to know Lidle and Alidi sell art supplies too - I love that stationary section in supermarkets :-D

Hi Rebecca ♥️ Oh it's lovely to hear from you! I've missed seeing your videos and I hope you get your battery fixed soon! I wasn't hugely keen on these mainly because it was really hard to layer the colours. For single layers they were lovely and vibrant but beyond that it became a lot of hard work. Anyway it's really good to hear from you! Take care ♥️♥️♥️
