It sounds like a great thing! My dad developed wet MD when he was about 80 years old. Though it was a bad thing, it led to my moving in with him to help him. That led to almost 9 wonderful years together before he passed away at 91 years of age. That being said, it is sad to see a very active loved one loss their eyesight and much of their independence.I am 65 now, so MD is a concern for me and I always make sure the doctor checks my eyes for it during yearly exams.

@@chrystalthornton1502 I am sorry your family has to deal with this as well. Once it has started, there are injections that can be made into the eye that stop the bleeding. This treatment was developed after my dad had MD for some years. At first he was given laser treatments, but the bleeding always reoccurred. But the medicine shot into the eye finally stopped the bleeding. Preventative measures include taking the vitamin lutein.

I had this test last month during my regular yearly test (combined with my regularly scheduled plaquenil testing). I was told it was to see how I adapted to seeing in the dark, but I truly did not understand the test procedures or how it would be interpreted. Apparently, I passed but we did discuss age-related macular degeneration (a problem my father had) and doctor wanted me to be aware of it along with my thin retinas, and the optic nerve damage he has been monitoring for year (stable for all that time). After viewing your video, I have a better understanding of how the test works and why the woman in the headset kept reminding me to look at red dot. My eyes would begin to wander if I thought I hadn't seen a flashing light in a while and so I would go in search of one (LOL). Thank you for this very helpful video.

@TheCaitthegreat3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this video! I have so many questions regarding the topic...I am dealing with premature Macular Degeneration as a 29 year old woman. My eye doctor first saw questionable specks on my retinas. He was very forward with me about causes and effects of it, but he told me he wasn’t concerned because of my age. Still, he referred me to a specialist who confirmed that it was in fact MD. My age really confuses all the specialists I’ve seen. That all began about 5 years ago. I was told to take certain vitamins and to look for signs of MD, since at that point I wasn’t experiencing any effects. Now I have trouble with night driving slightly but more so on rainy nights. Also sometimes lines or words in books can bend but not a lot. My brother has since got tested for the gene, and luckily he does not have it. My mom has no family history of it, but my dad was adopted as a child so he doesn’t know his hereditary medical history at all. I do have some health issues that are not genetic nor eye related so maybe my existing issues could be related some how...my doctors couldn’t say one way or another because my health issues have minimal scientific data or research! I’m at a dead end, but I’m resilient and I won’t accept, “we don’t know.” as an answer. Is it possible to talk to you via email or even phone call! I don’t care which way, but comments are public. Thank you.

Will you explain why patients’ with macular degeneration have voids like you explained but their brains fills in those spots? Also explaining how macular degeneration can go unnoticed by affected patients due to those patients having their brains fill in gaps in their vision?
@telenelatelin86323 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the feed back loops that make the experience of vision in the brain. One of the first processing points that the nerve fibers from the eye reach is called the LGN (lateral geniculate nucleus), but about 80% of nerves feeding into the LGN are actually from the visual cortex, telling the LGN what it thinks you should be seeing. so even when the signal is being reduced or lost from neural damage, the visual cortex keeps filling it in as best it can, filling in the holes with what "should" be there. This is an oversimplification but that is the idea. this help? In AMD (macular degeneration) the layer of tissue that keeps the photoreceptors fed and healthy stops working properly, especially the ones in the center of vision, the macula. Once they break down, the photoreceptors themselves break down, and can no longer send signals to the brain.

Hey thanks for the question! True age related macular degeneration is something people get once they approach the age of 50 and older. But there are other diseases that are similar and appear when we are younger. For your sake, I hope any symptoms you have are temporary. Sleep is very good for the whole body, even the eyes and especially the brain. Device use is good to limit, as it may put increased demand on the eye muscles. There are some studies that suggest high energy light from the sun and artificial sources could damage the retina, but this has not been fully accepted at this time. More studies will tell. Either way, it will be best for you to have an eye exam with a qualified eye care professional in your area. Hope that helps.

I can, but don't like driving at night (or when it is raining at night). Am I concerned? Not to an extreme, although ignoring signs might not be the right course either. I will pay attention.

I have retinitis pigmentosa and I just can't see at all in dark or dim places
@rodneywhite49623 жыл бұрын
Ok the technology is cool but other than charging me more money how does it help. If it is dedecting macular degeneration earlier then can be detected from a retinal exam, then how does that change the treatment. Is it not the same..sunglasses, vitamins, stop smoking and maintain a clean cardiovascular health? Wouldn't you have suggested that anyway?
@victoriadzurinko53823 жыл бұрын
Hello, Rodney. I am the Director of Professional Relations at MacuLogix. Having a metric like the rod intercept can help you to detect and monitor your AMD patients at every stage. Much like an IOP or A1c, it gives you more information and gives your patient an easy to understand metric to follow their disease as well. Please feel free to reach out at MacuLogix.com if you have any additional questions.

@@victoriadzurinko5382 with IOP and A1C if it's elevated, we have tools to lower pressure or decrease ones blood glucose level. What can be done in the subclinical setting when your dark apdaption is abnormal beyond what is suggested ..sunglasses, vitamins, smoking cessation and improved health? Why measure at a subclinical level a statistic that cannot be treated?

I have birdshot. Does this mimic the same symptoms as macular degeneration because my symptoms are all the same.
@DoctorEyeHealth3 жыл бұрын
Birdshot is pretty rare! Although not exactly, symptoms of chorioretinopathy can show up with similar symptoms to AMD and even diabetic retinopathy. How long have you had it?

You're not helping the patient any, when you say flash, what do you mean? Every time the green light goes completely off and on, or are you speaking about the pulses within the green light? I've seen many videos on this subject and the docs. are more concerned with how much extra time their techs. will have to mock around rather than guiding the patient through this procedure, and not explaining the procedure very well. **If you slow this video down to the lowest speed, those flashes are turning off and on...too bad you couldn't explain that on your video.
