This video is part four in our answering beginner questions. This time i will be talking about testing and maintaining stable water parameters. Some of the questions i will be answering are what water paramaters should i test and what are the recommended ranges? What should i use to test these water parameters? When should should i start testing calcium, alkalinity and magnesium? How do i keep cal, alk and mag levels in the appropriate rages? How do i keep my salinity stable? How do i keep consistent tempature and reduce fluctuations? How do i bring up my ph and keep it stable? what do i do if my water levels are to high?

I have tonnes of it and I'm fluval clearmax and running carbon and was wondering if I use phosguard do I remove the fluval clearmax or can I run them both ?? It's driving me mad my snails and crabs are super super hairy hahaha and I want it to go it's ugly

The first thing you need to do is find the nutrient source, check the tds of your top off/water change water. Next is how old is the rock and how did you come about getting it? A lot of nutrient issues come from using USED rock, rock is a sponge and if the tank that had it before had any nutrient issues you can bet that its inside the rock. As for the fluval clearmax that just removed phosphates but you are still left with elevated nitrates and thats what feeding the algae. I would stick to the recommended amount for reef and change it out as recommended. So now you need to find a way to remove nitrates as well as the phosphates.. You could increase your water change amounts, add biopellets(if you do please contact me before hand) or you could plumb in an algae scrubber/refugium. Those are all great ways to keep nitrates in check. At the moment thats all the help i can offer, like i said find the nutrient source first and let me know.. check out my algae video in the beginner guide playlist.

Another nice vid, thanks man. Did not know that about the elevated Mg level and snails :| Have noticed a few snails upside down on the sand lately on a regular basis My Mg has been over the Red Sea test limit of 1500ppm for a while now, how did you test yours to be above this? I'm using NSW and i've been told the Mg level in our part of the world in naturally high, so now i need i research how to bring it down. I currently use Kalk in my top off for Ca and Alk and dont dose anything so the Mg is clearly coming from my NSW.

I keep using more titration and do the math.

ahaha, fair enough. So i did this and got the color change with the 1st drop of titration so i'll call my Mg at 1500ppm thanks

My calcium and magnesium are high, do you think it's a reason why all shrimp I put died just after 1 day, all my parameters are ok, 0 nitrate 0 phosphate except my calcium and magnesium. Bought fire shrimp, pistols shrimp and perpermint shrimp they all died, but all my hermit crabs are alive, few snails are climbing outside the tank too. I wanted to buy shrimp but until I don't know why they are dying I am hesitant, ty

Need help! I have zero nitrates I mean zero nitrates in my reef tank and I believe it's the cause of my corals losing color, how do I add some nitrates back into my tank? Do I turn off skimmer for some time? No water change? Add some sort of nitrate liquid? Plz answer it would help me so much thanks man!

First off no need to try to add something to increase them. What are you doing to get it to zero? are you using biopellets, zeovit? Big water changes? not feeding? I would look at that first. Another thing that causes corals to lose color.. did you increase your lighting? did you add new lights? Please answer these questions for me to be able to continue to help.
