The MCW home base is actually my local hobby shop. You are right, Mike is a great guy and really cares about providing a good, accurate paint for projects. I have only used his lacquers and had great success with coverage, flow, etc. Nice to see a small business step in to replace such an important need for the hobby.

Hello, @Donald Woodward If you've had a chance to use the MCW metallic paints, what would you say about the "fineness" of their metal flake appearance, that is, in comparison to other manufacturers' metallics you may have used? I'm getting ready to work on a 1/24 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and I'm concerned about the scale appearance of the paint I'll be hitting it with. I know that, like MCW, Zero Paints and Gravity Colors carry paint specifically identified as Guardsman Blue. I tested Tamiya X-13, recommended as a (close enough?) match for Guardsman Blue, but to my eye it appeared too coarse. Thanks!

MCW is a lifesaver. Due to miscommunication in the Hobby for Decades Testors brand got a bad rep due to ignorance of how enamels are used and applied. Model Master had the best paint on the market for Cars and Military, the quality was top notch, but sales slowed due to ignorance and lack of presentation by Testors. Acrylics took over because of ease of use and much more tutorials on their use. My LHS just started stocking MCW paints and I was ecstatic to be able to get some easily after seeing "Old Man" Don do a video on these. Great paints and they use the actual mixtures the Auto and Military builders used so these colors are spot on. Thanks to Mike at MCW for a great line and replacement for Model Master colors. Great video Rex!!!!!!!!!!

I had purchased a 1:16 scale 1979 Firebird model because I wanted to have a re[plica of the car I got for my HS graduation gift in 1991. I wanted to make sure it was accurate, and was thinking I would have to find a body shop to get the right color paint, and pay a ridiculous amount for way more automotive paint than I would need. Ran across a post on reddit while researching using actual manufacturers' paint codes for models, and someone mentioned MCW. Quick Google search pointed me to the website, and I went thru the entire site looking for the paint code I needed for the gold '79 firebird, and it wasnt there. Sent an email, and Mike replied quickly and told me, if he doesn't have it, he can make it, and made me up 2 bottles of laquer in the exact paint code I needed. 100% spot on accurate to true color. Also asked him about GM Paint code 70 Flame Red used on '75 Corvettes as I was searching for the true color of the General Lee for another kit I have. Not only did he say that he would make some, but he started carrying it as a regular item in the shop, and even has it labelled as the color for the General on the site. 100% will use MCW whenever I need to re-create an actual car to scale. Thinking about switching to MCW for my scale military aircraft as well.

Nice preview. I use MCW almost exclusively on all my nascar race cars. Good luck with that hardener.😀 I use it in all my enamel shoots and found even cleaning rim, the hardener seals jar shut. I transfered mine to a dropper bottle, solved the issue. Can’t say enough about MCW. I learned to airbrush with their lacquers, but I have slowly started using more and more enamels. The incorporation/availability of the FS type colors in the enamels is particularly of interest to myself ( miss The model masters). There's no other choice than MCW, that's because you can't get Tamiya Enamels here in the US. 😉 But actually I do like both but I believe Tamiya doesn't have that many FS numbered enamels. MCW is working on getting most done. Plus a larger jar, a tad larger than the Model Master jars is a bonus too. And they go on great

does the Mr. Color Leveling Thinner work well with the military lacquers the way it does with the MCW enamels....? i do almost entirely military aircraft as well as commercial airliners. now and again i make a rare sally outside of my normal circle with an occasional car kit for a special purpose. many modelers,myself included have tried to get away "on the cheap" using store-brand thinners,etc with some pretty sad/unsatisfactory results such as trying to use 70 % isopropyl alcohol to thin Tamiya acrylics or hardware-store mineral spirits and lacquer thinners for enamels such as Testors,etc. i,ve found out the hard way that Humbrol enamels are very "finicky" about only using THEIR mineral-based thinner{secret formula?} or else the paint will go rotten and turn into useless "jelly" in the tinlet in a short time. 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol works just fine with the Gunze-Sangyo Aqueous Hobby Color latex acrylics but for Tamiya,it,s best to use their own formula thinner for best results as well as to preserve the shelf life. sometimes Testors enamels are funny that way too....best to use their own formula thinner as well or else it,ll go bad/rotten in the bottle with a bit of time. for the MCW military lacquers,what is your best recommendation to thin for airbrushing if needed as well as their grey primer....? if only we could have been the proverbial "fly on the wall" at whatever boardroom meetings with Testors/Rust-O-Leum and heard the REAL reason/reasons they had for dumping the entire Model Master paint line.....! a shame Pactra and Floquil are no longer with us....:( are you familiar with or have you ever used a line of paints from Imrie/Risley....? i think they were turpentine-based and made for painting cast metal military miniatures....i remember as a teen seeing them used on other models such as armor and aircraft in articles in the old SCALE MODELER magazine back in the 1970,s but in never saw any I/R paints for sale in any local hobby shops in any places i lived in. keep up the good work,sir.....this is a great YT channel.....! :) oh,one more silly question...what sort of seal does MCW use in their bottle caps...? if it,s the old-style cardboard/foil/thin poly like Testors,i might try to replace them when i get my MCW paints with discs of soft polyethylene or polyurethane cut to size from a sheet of the stuff to ensure a durable and totally airtight seal....i,ve had a number of Testors and old Pactra paints go bad/dry up in the bottles due to a cap that had even a slight defect in the inner cap seal and once that happens,no sort of solvent/thinner is any help.
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 2 жыл бұрын
I have never thinned MCW lacquers for painting. They're pre thinned and unlike other pre thinned paints I find theirs just right. I've thinned Humbrol, Tamiya, Testors and Aqueous with Mr Leveling Thinner exclusively and have had no troubles. Unfortunately MCW uses that cardboard disk. I've ask about them changing it or the jars themselves. You can use my old trick of storing them upside down, that creates an air tight seal
@Grimhilde7
@Grimhilde7 2 жыл бұрын
@@barbatosrex9473 ah,ok.....i,d think they and Testors would have since advanced beyond those obsolete/old-fashioned cardboard seals by now. i suppose i,ll have to get some soft poly sheet of the right thickness and make a die of steel tube of the right diameter with a sharpened end edge and start cutting out my own seals. hobby/model paint ain,t cheap anymore like it used to be and we,ve got to protect our investments.....! i suppose i,ll grab a few of those big bottles of Mr. Leveling Thinner 400 as well. i did restock and overhaul some of my paint drawers in my workshop rollaway boxes with goodly amounts of both Tamiya enamels and lacquers i had flown in special from Taiwan by DHL. there went a few grand$ of my ill-gotten wages...! {senior captain,s pay} at least we can get Tamiya lacquer thinner here through "normal channels"....any reasons you might know as to why they,re not importing the enamels here yet....? the acrylics have been here for just over 40 years and the TS and AS sprays since 1999/2000.....i,d had some silly ideas about buying the Tamiya enamels in quantity on overseas trips and packing and bringing them home myself but decided it wasn,t worth the risks involved versus US customs and civil aviation authorities concerning the carrying of any sort of flammable liquids/substances aboard passenger airliners.....and that includes ANY form of paints.....HUGE fines in the tens or even hundreds of thousand$$$ and i,d be out of a job and lose all my civil aviation licenses too.
@Grimhilde7
@Grimhilde7 2 жыл бұрын
@@barbatosrex9473 OK.....got my shipment of MCW lacquers and found it might seem to need a bit of thinning/reducing,especially the flat grey primer. best possible thinner for the job...? maybe Tamiya,s lacquer thinner with retarder....? or the Mr. Thinner 400 leveling variety.....? i,m sure toluene or xylol would be too "hot" to use on plastic. MCW,s primer evaporates/dries almost too fast and clogs my Olympos airbrush as well as semi-dry droplets creating a rough surface by drying before it has a chance to level itself properly.

I started to use MCW (lacquer) about a year ago and thought it was great at first. It levels well and cleans out of the airbrush great. The downside is the fumes are 3x worse than say Tamiya Lacquer and comes out to be about 2x-3x more expensive. I did a test last night with an old 1/48 F-117 and it took 16ml of MCW paint to fully cover while it took only 5-6ml of Tamiya Lacquer. So approx. it cost me $5 bucks to paint the top side of a 1/48 F117 with MCW paint and only $2.20 using Tamiya lacquer. Overall its a nice product but its coverage isn't great and its too expensive. I like the shop and the owner but there are better alternatives. The one enamel i tried didn't impress much but I am not a huge fan of enamel.

Are enamels better than acrilics ?
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 3 жыл бұрын
Now that's a trick question. They are two completely different paints. One is water based and the other is solvent oil based. It really comes down to the user. Some out there don't want to use a solvent at all due to smells and flammable characteristics and others like me don't mind. I feel solvent based paints perform better and are easier to use. Acrylics have a learning curve to get great results. But again that's just me and my opinion. If you don't mind a solvent paint like an Enamel then I would go for that

@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks for the response, i only have Vallejo Game Color paints right now, they work pretty well but dry super fast, even too fast sometimes, tested the other day using paint retarder but it didn't do much, maybe i should of used more. The reason is so it doesn't dry in the airbrush, should one also use flow enhancer if paint retarder is used?

@@TheIcemanModdeler yes you can combine the two. The good thing about solvent paints is no tip dry at all

Why lacquer thinner rather than enamel thinner?
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 3 жыл бұрын
You can use lacquer thinner when thinning enamels. It's actually better than enamel thinner, helps it dry faster. They're both solvent based paint so either thinner works. Always go for lacquer thinner when model building, it just performs better and has a quicker drying time.
