Yes, the weather has been crazy for weeks on end! Hopefully all over and we can start enjoying spring time on the water. Great vid. Enjoy.

Hi Steve always good to hear from you. AJ is a local boat builder. Check out the vid on the Couta boats. Arabella is his work. Immaculate.

I think that Danforth type anchors probably work quite well in a range of conditions for smaller trailer type yachts. I have had in the past an Investigator 563, and a Sonata 7 trailer yachts, both had Danforth type anchors and there was never a fail in my experience. Now on my Nantucket Island 33, I have a large Manson and all chain rode which is brilliant, but the boat came with a large Danforth type anchor which I cleaned and restored but never used. It difficult to store. However, I bought a largish Danforth type Manson racing anchor which I have on hand as a stern anchor if required. These are light weight aluminium but hold strongly. I ended up using one on my Sonata, it held us solid. If it works don’t change it. Finally, I am almost convinced to buy the Neo drone. They seem indestructible, and a good learning tool for sailing photography. Best.

I’ve also got a large Manson a £20 one that was given to me but I haven’t tried it. It’s a bit big further 18 footer and I think that things have developed further than the plough anchors now. If upgraded I’ll be putting a little snap spread on starting the anchor on the deck putting a portal through the deck so I can store the road and chain below, so it’s quite a big and expensive exercise but necessary once I start doing some work here on the coast

Ran a larger Danforth on a 16m 50 tonne fishing boat anchoring on anything and everything. Couldn’t fault it at all

It’s always been my favourite too. This one was small for the conditions but didn’t falter.

I've lost faith in my Danforth as the primary and i purchased a Rocua self righting so even if it looses grab it will regain in short order i sleep much better knowing that it's one less thing to worry about

I'm with you on the Rocnas and other modern spades. My issue is they are expensive and don't store flat. There is an interesting comment earlier in this thread. Many knockoff Danforth's in circulation. This one of mine is a good one though not original.

In reality, the Danforth anchor is unsuitable for pretty much any type of boat beyond a dinghy. A modern type anchor such as a Sarca Excel, or a Rocna would be way more suitable and appropriate. I hear you like the idea of the anchor folding flat, but why not simply keep it on the anchor rollers up on the bow. Surely a more safe and sensible option to protect your lovely little boat. A new Sarca is on my shopping list to replace the old CQR on my Swanson 30 when I can afford it.

I will need to build a new bow roller snub bowsprit. Once I get into less sheltered waters I plan to do something like that. I also want to put a port into the deck so astronauts to be able to stow the chain in the locker instead of on deck.

I wouldn’t attach a Danforth to anything that floats.

Now that’s pretty direct talk! 😊 works fine on the river but once I start venturing into Les sheltered conditions I’ll be upgrading. Thinking a Little rockna would be nice. I’ve got a couple of CQR’s but they have been less reliable than the danforth. I do have a 20 lb Manson but it’s a bit big and again it’s a plough which I’m not fond of

Do you need to get permission from authorities before publishing drone videos? We do and it's not great.
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising Ай бұрын
I was about to so say then thinking it through.... we do need permission to film using a drone in national parks and reserves. Tasmania is currently 47% national parks and this is growing to encompass vast areas of marine environment. There was an interesting case of a couple of guys that went panning for gold in a national park filmed it and posted it on youtube. They were fined so heavily they had to close down their channel! Outside parks, not permitted over private property, of government infrastructure or flight paths. Doesn't leave a lot of margin! How are things with you? getting ready for winter?

I don't think that was a genuine Danforth anchor, genuine ones have danforth cast into the stock, as far as I can tell the were never imported into australia There are a lot of copies in Oz that are sand anchors that don't work quite as well I bought 2 genuine 25lb ones in the states when I passed through a few years ago ,I have use them in Ernest a few time in different parts of the world on my 39ft yacht and they have never let me down My primary anchor is now a marsh (south Oz) and secondary for soft mud is a genuine Danforth

I suspect you are correct. I've neve seen the brand stamped. So many knockoffs. I've had one or two that were not so good. But this one is a winner. I know modern spades are very effective but on a small boat 18' the danforth folds flat which is nice for stowage.

Why on earth didn’t you just go to the Beauty Point pub pontoon? You would have been much better off.Charley
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising Ай бұрын
You've got a strong argument there. A beer and chips near the fire would have been nice, but I wouldn't have learned much from that. I'm preparing to take Sarah Ann into some challenging situations where there are no pubs and pontoons. I'd rather find out what works and what doesn't in a relatively safe situation with perfectly flat water.
