Back when I was a kid, we used lye solution and aluminum foil to make 'dirty' hydrogen. We collected it in the biggest balloons we could find and had great fun igniting the balloons in various ways. One day I put a small steel tube in the neck of a balloon to use as a nozzle. Since the hydrogen was 'dirty' with NaOH./water vapor, the flame from the tube was yellow-orange. Anyway, the tube got too hot to hold, and I dropped it into the kitchen sink. The flame heated up a patch of the enamel [cast-iron sink, really thick enamel coating] and it spalled off! A shard of the hot ceramic found the balloon, popped it, and the fire-ball filled the kitchen! Mom was not pleased.

Hello Cody! You made this welder stuff, and its AWESOME! But I have a small add to the hydrogen storage problem: The hydrogen not only leaking at the smallest spot, but it can diffuse through normal steel. At this process, its dissolve the carbon in steel, and tusn it to methane. The storage can will be fragile, and fail under load. This takes time, but do not trust that container anymore. If you really want to store hydrogen under pressure, youll need some high nickel alloy tank.

Hydrogen also diffuses in between Iron atoms, that's why you usually need special tanks to store it. It also changes the structure of the metal and weakens it, so you should watch out to not have as much presure in your hydrogen tank, because the chance of a rupture gets higher the longer the Hydrogen is stored inside.

A hydrogen flame will never create a good quality weld because if you have excess oxygen you have oxidized metal, and if it has excess hydrogen it creates brittle hydrides.
@Marc83Aus8 жыл бұрын
Preheating or post weld heating can reduce embrittlement, but I've heard it's better to use an oxygen rich mix and use methods to reduce oxidation. One simple method is to set up a propane flame over the weld area, it doesn't have to be strong but it serve to preheat the metal and also it burns up the excess oxygen.
@DeliciousDeBlair8 жыл бұрын
Agreed, propane as a shield gas can help a lot. The ideal heat shield gas in this situation is carbon monoxide because not only does it rob that extra oxygen, it helps add trace carbon to the surface of the work piece to give a hardened surface. This may not always be desirable, but when it is, it can be used. Another quite dangerous shielding gas is cyanide gas but it is so much more dangerous its not really worth discussing unless you are in an enviro suit with a remote air supply. Cyanide can harden many metals because of the nitrogen content over and above the carbon content, but the risk of poisoning makes it generally impractical.

I have found that if you drink pure water (zero mineral analysis) for several months (or even rainwater probably... unfortunately I didn't have access to rainwater at the time I switched to pure water from tap water) as opposed to municipal (also called town water) tap (faucet) water; your ability to differentiate between different tastes get a lot better. I can now easily taste the difference between distilled water, rain water, quality bottled pure water(which is very rare) , crappy bottled water (which is very common! Especially ones with high mineral counts on the analysis label or no analysis label at all) and of course tap water which you can usually smell before you even taste it! [Just sharing my experience for inferential reference. I think I should say I don't drink much soft-drink (soda-pop) at all but do drink alcohol so not sure if what other drinks one takes makes any difference. If you are interested the brand of pure water is from noblebeverages com in AU (not affiliated in any way)]

I worked for a company that made odd machines, one of which was a oxygen/hydrogen torch that was made to cut four feet and greater, thick steel. One day when the machine was finished, we tested it, I couldn't believe it, it actually cut four feet of steel. The cutting head was supplied from four bottles of hydrogen and eight bottles of oxygen, all hooked together with what looked like hose that looked like garden hose, but actually made for this purpose. The pressures for the gases were 240psi for the oxygen and about 120psi for the hydrogen, both being combined in a cutting head that was over a inch in diameter. The flame was about three feet long, shortening to a foot and a half when the extra oxygen was added. The cut itself was fairly clean, top to bottom, with very little flare-out at the bottom. Yes, Cody, the torch is possible and is used.

+Christian Montrose The torch is not hot at all actually you can touch the flame to your skin and it will hardly burn you, the oxygen and hydrogen is the oxidizer for what ever your burning. So what ever it is, its burning its self, an oxy/ace torch alone wont cut through the iron it just melts! Take a hot coal from a fire, what happens when you blow on it? it burns faster cause your giving it more oxygen. Burning faster creates more heat, so the tungsten will keep heating up until it melts and falls off.

Cody, I noticed in the second series using your homemade torch, to test for leaks, you were going to dunk the tank in water. In the propane business my brother figured out something similar to their propane leak testing solution by making his own. Use an old saline eye drop bottle filled 3/4 with water and just ad a few drops of liquid dish soap to the water. Shake it up, you want fewer bubbles in your solution. Then spray it around the new welding and valves to check for leaks. If you find one it will bubble and pop, bubble and pop. Hope this Idea will help you with your leaks. Sam

I must tell you that it was the most painful experience, ended up in the hospital. They rinsed my eye out with a lubricant eye cleaner, I had a sunburn to the retina. Please where those glasses. I did not listen and found out the hard way. Most people do. When travelling close to a STAR, humans would go blind forever. Even with lead glasses. I worked with a FLAME THROWER for a while, it is not fun. Mixing gases off old rusty tanks is dangerous. COLD WEATHER IS DEADLY. Valves break and explode. FACE MASKS in wool. +TrollFaceTheMan Heat conductivity of the gas is a major factor. While oxyacetylene burns hotter, it is a 'less dense' heat. I will go to hell for that last bit, but I don't know the proper words to say that one gas system has more 'density' of heat while the other has a higher temperature but is less 'dense'. Should have paid more attention in class...
@TrollFaceTheMan9 жыл бұрын
That's is a valid point. But I still stand by my original statement that the torch heads can make a huge difference. It sorta like the Idea of a pencil point vs swirl flame propane torch. Even if you have them using the same fuel amount the Swirl just burns way better, because the primary and secondary flames are mixed efficiently into one flame leaving very little "Waste heat..." Unlike the Pencil flame where only the very tip is hot, and the rest of the flame is rather cold and wasteful...
@jolllyroger18 жыл бұрын
it's not the torch heads that make the difference and oxyhydrogen can exceed 9,000 degrees it does not carry away the heat and seems to automatically adjust to the material .... it will melt everything known to man. ... you see science even though scientists think n they are God's they know so little about how nature and the world works everything is a guess and almost every time of science has its exceptions. ..... the way the sun works no one knows they only guess. .. and the sun is an oxy hydrogen burn and everything melts in the sun ..... browns gas is just so unstudied .... one of those ignored things. ... the combining of the 2 most powerful elements creating water and heat very easily controlled heat yet if combined and ignited beats black powder. .... anyone ever blow stumps with browns gas it world great

While in the Navy in the 60's on our ship the air dryer for one of our RADAR's broke down the air dryer was used to purge the wave guides, I suggested using dry nitrogen that we purged our HF antenna tuners with. What happened was disastrous the UHF voltage in the wave guide arced over making nitric acid, the damage was blamed on me for my suggestion but the fact is that they somehow must have had water in the system and even the air dryer still put nitrogen into the system even though it was less still why didn't the same thing happen in the HF tuners that were at a similar power out. This has bothered me all these years and I was reminded today. Cody I like and appreciate all of your work and the practicableness you bring to science.

Did you know deuterium water ice sinks in deuterium-depleted water? I've read that one of the properties of the flame of that gas (assuming its Browns gas [HHO?], forgive me my chemistry is not too good and I have not heard it called oxyhydrogen but I think that's what it is) is to render radio-active material less radioactive or inert. I have often wondered if that is true. The fact that it can vaporize tungsten, weld glass to brick and adjust temp to whatever it is used on is pretty amazing so I wouldn't be surprised if it could. The science behind it would be very interesting. +Cody'sLab to the rescue? SCIENCE!
@theCodyReeder8 жыл бұрын
This is not browns gas because it is being mixed at the point of ignition, well I guess it is just before it ignites... it would certainly be able to turn brick to glass but I doubt it would make anything less radioactive.
@Drew_Hurst8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for letting me know that the gas is qualified differently when mixed on ignition as opposed to pre-ignition +Cody'sLab I didn't think it would have made a difference. I did believe the article I read about Browns gas and saw a video of a guy welding a glass rod to a house brick! So I did some double checking and as for the radiation... yep that is true too, it was even shown to US congress in 1992 but sadly it must have went over their heads :( You have everything needed to do a test to see if the OxyHydrogen gas would work on your radioactive materials as an experiment. It's not Browns gas as you say but it's worth a try don't you think? (Note that pieces of "metal and aluminum" were put near the radioactive sample and put under the flame from what I can glean from the link below). Results were astonishing! Reduction in radiation to 99% of original levels!! Very early tests in Sydney AU could only achieve 50% reductions but apparently they have been continuing to research and refine this aspect of the gas. Do links work in KZbin? I will add spaces Here is what I am talking about... Lost the link for this sorry but this is all that was written anyway: "Brown’s Gas was first demonstrated to US government officials in 1992. Congressman Berkley Bedell helped publicize the results of the demonstration. There are many different types of radioactive isotopes and many ways to vary the composition of Brown’s Gas and how it effects different types of radioactive materials. When used on Cobalt 60, Brown’s Gas eliminated 96% of the radioactivity in under 10 minutes. Either the mixture can be refined or the time can be increased to be more effective. Americium was reduced by 99% in under 5 minutes." More recent and detailed info here:rexresearch com/brown-haley/brown-haley htm Love your work Cody! SCIENCE!

@Drew_Hurst8 жыл бұрын
Yes that would be an interesting experiment too +gold0monkey but I don't have any of the items necessary to perform it. @soylentgreenb8 жыл бұрын
Brown's gas, HHO etc. are just over-unity energy scams. They're not things that actually exist in the real world. Chemical reactions mean nothing to radioactive elements. The energies involved in coliding neuclei so fast that they form a different nuclei is in the millions to trillions of kelvins. The core of the sun can fuse hydrogen; heavier elements it is much too cold for. This is what particle accelerators do.

I recently started watching KZbin again, and am glad to see you uploading new vids. I am rewatching some of the old content now as an adult. I have been an avid fan of this channel for quite a bit (since 2014), but the man now, and the man 8 years ago are so different. This is a good thing in my opinion, as it showcases the channel's evolution quite well. I was about 10 years old when I first saw the furnace building videos, and I think I've changed considerably too since then. This man singlehandedly got me to study engineering. I even wanted a ball mill for my birthday at one point(I unfortunately didn't get one). I would just like to express my gratitude toward your efforts, and how much it has positively affected so many people. However, I am still not going anywhere near liquid mercury. I do miss the stronger accent though(\j).

+Cody'sLab Bam, that's a cool job. I used to watch the spectrometrec (spectrometer) oil analysis guys burn our jet engine oil samples to see what kind of wear metals were in them. Choke cherry jam is pretty good, though I never got used to being choked by the cherries, though they are better after a number of them, lol. Be careful not to over water trees, though new ones need water. My mom killed off hundreds of trees in her life because of over nurture. If you have water down there, which you obviously do, that will be enough for sure. You can drown the surface roots on plants, but the deeper ones can be right in pure water, though if it's wet dirt they rot.

You can mix soap and water in a spray bottle and spray on your tanks to pinpoint your leaks without having to dunk the whole thing under water. Lots of people also use this trick to find nails and other holes in car tires. Nice Video, Cheers!

I love the idea of using a hydrogen-oxygen fuel mixture, for that very reason you showed in the video…its “waste” product is water. Which, if you build a system to capture and condense the water vapor, which is then returned to a “fuel container” (water tank) to then be used for separating into hydrogen and oxygen again…you effectively have unlimited fuel.

I’m no expert but I’ve done a little bit of welding and torch cutting, and you don’t even need the acetylene to cut! Once you have the steel beginning to melt, you can turn off the acetylene and the oxygen alone is enough to burn the steel itself. The cutting torches we used to use had a lever which would turn off the acetylene so you don’t need to fiddle with the knobs once you get a cut started.
@goodolbertaboy19628 жыл бұрын
Old vid just whatched. Always quality vids. Rapid oxidation needs no extra fuel gas to continue. Once started you could completely shut off fuel, I.e., acetylene or hydrogen, and the cutting process would not be affected. Hydrogen burns hotter for sure. Awsome Idea. Scary 2. Might have to make one of these. My neighbors will be happy :)

I've worked a lot with hydrogen, professionally. You might not have a leak. The hydrogen is such a small molecule that it passes right through the steel. Your cylinders have thin walls, and they've been stored outside, so the sun heated them up, which increased the pressure, which increases the loss rate. Lighting a flame with a leaking tank is nowhere near as dangerous as you think - out of doors. the gas is so light, that it just goes straight up. Good video.

@WS-gw5ms8 жыл бұрын
I've used that torch to cut sheet metal. also in the instructions there is a way to use that torch with oxygen only. it's the steel that acts as fuel. at that point it cuts like a plasma cutter, but goes through a small bottle of o2 in like a minute.
