Glad to see you back at it. Excellent line up and splitting. I'm in Upstate NY and most of my wood pile is maple. Some of it's really gnarly stuff!

That 6 pound maul kicks ass

Absolutely !!! You can’t go wrong with a maul sometimes. Also that handle that’s in that 6lb maul is still the handle from my first splitting video when I first started the channel and it’s still holding up great !! It’s actually a hardware store handle with less than ideal grain 😂 I’m not complaining !!

Nice work! I'd love to try out the new Council Tool splitters some time. I have one of those winged splitting axes and they are great. I've tried to find out more about them without too much success. I can tell you that it does seem to be a German design but lots of companies have made them, they have been a common "hardware store" splitter where I live in Ontario since at least the 90s and there's a zillion plastic handled no-name ones kicking around here. The one I have is an older wood handled one, maybe 80s vintage, and has an Anglo-American eye and a "USM" stamp. People variously state that USM stands for U.S. Mann or United Shoe Machines (which was owned by Mann by that point) so either way it was made by Mann in the US. Lots of Mann made axes entered the Canadian market starting in the 80s, I assume because of the Canada-US free trade agreement around that time (before that most axes in Canada were domestic, Swedish, or German). Anyway, I can't find a name for the pattern and they seem to just be called "Spaltaxt" in German but that just means "splitting axe" not this kind specifically. Of course the German ones differ in the D shaped eye. I think winged spaltaxt is a pretty good name for the general pattern.

Thank you Matt !!! Wow, awesome comment man thank you !! Since this video I’ve tried to secure this head to a wooden handle 2 more times and it just won’t stay. I believe this head was originally on a fiberglass handle due to the design of the head. I do really want to add one of these splitting axes to the arsenal !! I think I may just have to check out my local store and pick up either a replacement fiberglass handle or a complete one on a fiberglass handle. Thanks again man !!

@@940joey2 I rehandled my sister’s kindling hatchet after the plastic handle loosened and it was a pain because the eye hourglass shaped with the narrow part halfway through instead of the bottom. It took a long while to shape the tongue and I had to cross wedge it too. I think it’s secure but it doesn’t have to be as strong as a full size splitter!

I bring wedges and 8lb sledge when I’m doing rounds that big. Estwing makes a good wedge.

That’s a great idea, I’ll have to give wedges a try !! I do have a couple and I still have the rest of this tree to buck still. Man this maple kicked my butt !! Thanks for watching 🤙

Just watching and listening to the sound of the hits I think you're right that the first one has great potential if you can get the handle to stay on.

I've got a kelly jersey beveled the same as yours. I find it actually is a good splitter but I've also noticed polished bits don't get stuck as bad. Maybe an idea for another video for you. It also flicks really well too.

Thanks for watching !!! Heck yeah love a beveled kelly, they’re awesome!! It’s funny you bring up that point, I feel the same way with a polished bit. I don’t split much with my polishes bit axes, but when it comes to chopping I def notice a difference. It also doesn’t hold debris or rust with moisture !! Polished bit for the win. Thanks again 🤙

i like the fact that you didnt shit all over the fiskars. we can all appreciate the beauty of a wood handled axe that you can customize but some of us just want a zero maintenance (except for sharpening) axe that might last forever. i was camping in a remote spot years back and my damn hatchet handle broke. i dont care how swedish the head is.....its fucking useless without a handle!
@940joey2

Absolutely right man !! I’m really looking forward to spending more time with the fiskars, I think I’m going like it a lot and I really think they have their place !! Here’s a little sneak peak I didn’t mention in the video. I actually ordered fiskars chopping axe during Amazon’s deal days, I’m goin to do a first impressions and use video soon. Thank you so much for watching !! Funny I was thinking about you during the making of this because you were the first person to recommend that I try a fiskars almost a year ago now. I’m glad I finally got to try one out, thank you !!
