I've get a Dayton pattern Collins 4Lbs axe from a friend it's my first American made axe I'm from Germany and I live here so it's very hard to get a American felling axe out here in the Eifel but now I got one and friends of the axes that's a great axe I've never got one like this my german axes are great and very good to split but to chop down huge trees 🌳 my new friend from Connecticut is another thing... a tree big as a upper leg takes 6 hits If it's dry and through fresh wood like a oak it go's like there is nothing... I love the Dayton pattern Collins

That is a good looking boot! I am from Spokane I own several pairs of PNW boots .White's and Nick's. I am trying Frank's out for the first time on a rebuild. I went back to White's after spending over $800, 10 month wait on a pair of boots. I had a few questions on a resole. I wasn't crazy with my final design. The guy was extremely rude and condescending to me. I spent a lot of money at White's over the years. Heard good things about Frank's met with them and was blown away by their friendly customer service, not from the owners, but from other staff. So they are doing my rebuild! ..How are those in the snow? I find they are a bit slippery. Would recommend V 100 lug sole a lot heavier but more cushion and amazing traction!

These are decent spikes but with much use they will break. The outside spike i had to drill the holes bigger to fit n the studs are almost to short with the outside spike.

Try a Tuatahi (New Zealand) Trapper axe/hatchet. I prefer it over my Gransfor Bruks Scandinavian or Wildlife hatchet. Of course they make larger axes.

I have a brand new GBA Scandinavian Forest Axe. Its edge appears to be solid. Mine was made by Oscar Elliason. I do not know anything about him. I am coating the handle with Linsheen, so it is up to my standards. It will have ten thin coats on it before I am through with it. My small Forest axe held up to cutting up some dried oak without a problem. I did sharpen it up, afterwards. It was made by Mithras Blitz. Some pine knots are full of crystallized pine resin, which will wipe out the edge on any axe. I know my GBA axes are hardened better than the edges on my True Temper axes. They ring when you strike them with a ball peen hammer.

Love this video man. Love the rambling too. But I have a major problem. I do this with axes, hammers, anything that needs to be hung. When fitting the head, I shape the head so it’s a tight fit at first. As I keep checking, fitting, and filing to get it to sit lower to the shoulder, I end up with a handle that it’s way too small for the eye. Like I’m taking way too much off but I’m not. It might have to do with the eye being larger on the top than the bottom but looking at yours, you don’t have that problem. Before you even touch a wedge your handle is perfect fit in the eye. I’ve about given up I’ve screwed up so many now lol.

I recently posted this at Urban Lumberjack's channel, regarding his problems with his Scandinavian Forest axe: I had a few questions about the Forest axes, so an experienced grinder (18 years at Gränsfors) called me up. Spoke för over 30 minutes. He had a lot to tell: 57-59 HRC (I was told 56-57 earlier, it was wrong), often 58 HRC. 35 degrees bit ange for SFA and 33-35 for the Scandinavian Forest Axe. But - since the bit is convex it cannot be measured at the edge. It is an approximate angle at the "swell" (correct word?), which I understand as a few mm inside of the edge. At the "curve" of the bit. Approximate angle. The bit is convex to not be "sucked into" the wood when you cut branches, and to make the edge stronger. He actually said that the bigger angle and not razor sharp edge is supposed to somewhat more bounce back when you are limbing trees, so you can strike again, and not get stuck. Note this: The forest axes are NOT supposed to be razor sharp, i.e. you are not supposed to be able to cut paper or armhair with it. If you can, the angle may be to low/sharp and the edge too thin = it will fold over easily when you cut branches and trees. SFA is made for limbing branches off trees, and cutting down smaller trees. Scandinavian Forest Axe (or Large Forest Axe, which it is named in Swedish), is made also for cutting down larger trees. Of course cutting in V-angle. So folding edges may be because of too small an angle and too sharp an edge. Since it is made from carbon steel which is softer, this may occur, hence bigger bit angle, convex bit and not razor sharp. He also told me that Hults Bruk (Hultafors group) use the same Ovako steel as Gränsfors Bruk, and Wetterlings (who now produce axes for Gränsfors Bruk.)

Why do you lift up on the bar when you tighten the chain?

I agree that on my sub 3lb axes there seems to be little difference between the convex and flat cheeks. On my 4lb axes I do think theres a noticeable difference. I use these bigger axes mostly for splitting though, so I personally cant say whether its something to do with the bigger bit, or if its something to do with splitting bigger rounds.

you can see what it was, too much meat left in the center of the hinge. when i do the back cut (which is the most scary cut to make) i avoid torquing the bar back and forth and just keep my felling line pointed to whatever i aimed it at when cutting out the notch. of course keeping an eye on both sides of the cut too. 😊 also I've made that mistake of botching the back cut crooked like that, it can get hairy but I was fortunate that nothing went south. keeping the saw level with your notch cut can be difficult sometimes.
