The fully extended, bucket loaded off the right side track... tip, is a good indication that the machine needed the top mount counter weight to do that maneuver in a stable manner. Looks stable enough in line with the tracks. The adjustable width under carriage would save a lot of head aches with over width haul permits, but she is still a big heavy one... Thanks for the guided tour, Chris.

Nice that Volvo lets you test drive new machines. Other than mining or building highways not too many contractors need one that big.

Thank you for the demonstration of the Bigger VOLVO excavator. I had the privilege of meeting the President of Volvo at Con-Expo a few shows back. Very humble nice gentleman. Volvo Reminds me of (BE) BUCYRUS-ERIE back in mid 80s up till their End of Construction equipment build. The (500-H) it could have a standard 6 yard bucket. The track control reminds me of the old multi purpose control that the early machine had. In (BE) controls a full power pump to a foot pedal for Dipper arm. Was told by an operator that it was for pushing pipe home. Log loader set that foot pedal to be control of the Heel function.

Really like the feet free option, as Chris says ideal when your clearing out gullies, river edges and pond edges. Also in the cab it was really quiet compared to being on the outside, companies have done a lot of R&D into all round operators comfort over the last few years. I think they have finally realised that is a place of work, you could be potentially spending 8 to 10 hours a day sat in one of those things. With feedback from people like Chris and Mike at DP, who have a lot of followers, the companies that make these are going to have to take note.
@tujuprojects2 жыл бұрын
In my understanding that’s possible because that cabin doesn’t have pilot hydraulics in controls, everything is wired and hence easy to add more comtrols to it with software.

Slower than you might imagine, except that he had a team of equally adequate machines
@markpashia70672 жыл бұрын
He would have needed a team of haul trucks to keep up with him since two scoops would have filled his one truck. Then you run into traffic flow issues especially backing down the dam to dump. All the extra hauling costs to get equipment to job sites plus extra fuel burn might have actually made it not profitable. The key to any job is right sizing the equipment and fuel burn rates offset against labor rates of workers. His 220 and haul truck are a pretty good compromise on the size jobs that he does regularly.
@Mtlmshr2 жыл бұрын
@@markpashia7067 well said, I was thinking those questions and I answered them just as you did, it comes down to using the correct tool for the job. A cabinet maker generally does not use a sledgehammer 😳‼️

Couldn't go any faster than Barney
@pinwizz692 жыл бұрын
Just think how much faster Chris could have dug out the Bealy Good pond with that beast of a monster. He'd have had to buy a bigger Barney to haul all the dirt.
@peterkitts88152 жыл бұрын
This got me thinking of everything you have to consider on a job. Bigger machine needs more dirt hauling to keep up. 2 Barneys would be better than a bigger one. Then you need an extra driver too. Even 3 depending how far the dirt is being hauled. So along with the cost of the bigger machine you then have the cost of another hauler and the driver to operate it. Which also means an extra trip to haul another Barney to the job site. Becomes easy to see why you only go for these if you are always doing big, large scale jobs.

The question is will it pluck a tree out of the ground with out digging around the tree? Would it pull stumps out of the ground with out the tracks leaving the ground? You showed us that a bucket of dirt would lift one side of the tracks off of the ground. It may really need that extra counter weight. What would it cost to haul it to a job site? A new truck and trailer? Permits coming and going? But I'm sure it's fun to operate.

I don’t know why Cat can’t make functions speed adjustment that easy. Every thing we do is with a hoe and truck so the hoe is the main machine. I load load the side dumps with a 352f and 6 yard bucket so I can 3 pass them in and 1.5 minutes. They got a brand new next gen 352 and the bucket is very slow. Cat came out did some stuff but it didn’t help. I gave it 3 days and took the new hoe over and parked it and got the old 352 with 8000 hours and is still twice as fast as the new one.
