Hello Wooden. Thanks for mentioning me :-) As mentioned in the first video I would recommend this stickers Herma Movable Stickers No. 10315. They are more or less the same as the original Shaper tape. Quite sticky and no residues after removal. Of course a small paper cutting machine also speeds up the whole process. What I found out, is that the scaling of the tape is very important! On one on my test prints the dominos were 1mm bigger than the original. This results in an inaccuracy of about 5mm on 200mm distance! I will start some further tests the next days with accurate self printed tape and do some measurements.

Hi. Thank you for this idea. Others said exactly the same (about the Kylon) and I gave it a try. And indeed it works well, although I dislike that the spray blasts the adhesive around and other things get sticky too, so I prefer the glue stick I tested here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqm0q6WmiLVkfrc

Just made accuracy test with my self printed tape. I did two 20,1mm holes from my MFT design and compared the result with holes that were made with the Shaper Workstation. I design a 3D printed support for the Origin that fits into these two MFT holes. Perfect fit with both test pieces! So if the printed tape has the same size (I used a single original domino for test fit by eyesight), it works with enough accuracy for wood working. Just doing some final tests on my MFT design for the Shaper Workstation shelf top. I everything works fine, then I will release it on ShaperHub later this week.

Thank you so much for this! Your Shaper tips are really excellent! I have used this by taping a full sheet of the printed "shaper paper" to the item being engraved. Just a bit of painters tape along each edge seemed to work ok. Also, I have not tried this, but I once found a glue stick that was designed to have the same adhesive strength at the 3M sticky notes, i.e. easily removable. That might be a good solution.

Thank you - glad you like these videos. The idea with the shaper paper is good, if you have a large enough workpiece, and you don't need to route over your tape. Not sure I would trust such a lose way of attaching if you need to move over the paper though. Someone else also left the idea with the adhesive spray, so I am going to check that out... Thanks again :D

Print out some on larger paper and get them laminated... you can use tacks to pin them down, use double sided tape, or tape the edges. Mine look almost like the shaper workstation table. I’m going to experiment by putting one of these in a table with epoxy, not sure if it will work with a glossy surface so I may have to sand it matte. However, I have matte and glossy laminated ledger sheets and they both work fine, so it may be a non-issue. I tried epoxying some of the actual tape on a work surface, but the ink came off, this could possibly be remedied by putting some glue over it to seal it first.
@Woodensoul

Thanks for these ideas. Yes, multiple people mentioned the idea of laminating a piece of paper, which works well for large workpieces, where you have enough area and you don't need to route over the marked area.

Thank you for your videos. The information you provide is very useful. FYI, I have had good success using full sheets of printed shaper blocks without cutting the blocks into strips. I use “replaceable” glue stick as the adhesive. I find this to be particularly useful for large surfaces which saves some money over using official shaper tape. I use the “add tape to workspace” feature when the tape gets damaged through cutting or simply dragging the Origin over the tape. For smaller projects, I find it’s more efficient to simply use real shaper tape.
@Woodensoul

Hi Preston. Yeah, that is exactly how I use it too. Most often I use the ShaperTape, but when I have large areas, I use the printed sheets and stick them to the wood with a glue stick, as shown here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqm0q6WmiLVkfrc. Have fun!

Hi Beto. I do indeed love the Shaper a lot. It expands your possibilities in the workshop, similar to a CNC, but with less constraints. With CNCs you are usually very limited on the size of your workpiece, and you require a decent amount of computer skills. The SO is much more flexible and easy to use. I made a getting started video that might help you with understanding some of that: A beginners guide kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnLKqY2YndOhY80. So yeah, I fully recommend it. I am assuming the paper stock used to print on the domino patterns is of the thinnest available? ...standard copy machine stock might be too thick? Classic (pre-computer) graphic designers used a solvent-based low-tack "rubber cement" called *Fixogum* for re-mountable pieces of artwork when doing layout work. The stuff lasts forever, can be cleaned up with white spirit, rarely ever leaves a residue. Best of all it's free of any water, so unlike glue stick, your dominio paper won't warp or stretch (which influences the precision of your routing path quite a bit). It's available across the EU/CH and might be worth a try... (US version: Best-Test Paper Cement)

Thanks for the effort! When I generate tape with your settings the dominos come out smaller than on the original tape. I did a comparison routing a 60mm circle with both, and the «print circle» came out smaller than the «tape circle». Have you experienced this problem?
@Woodensoul
@Woodensoul 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank. Oh, that is weird. One possible reason could be that while printing, your printer resized the print. Some printers have a setting that they „resize“ the print, so everything fits the paper. I recommend you check this first. If your printer has other limits regarding how large the margins to the paper edges can be, you might have to choose other settings. The most important thing is that the dominos need to be exactly the same size as the original ShaperTape... Let us know what you found out...

@Wooden The printer was around 50€ when I bought it almost two years ago. Printed label tape (with 4 rows of dominos) is around 0.12 € per meter. For small areas, the tape is obviously best. The biggest benefit of using a full page, is not having to cut it into strips, the benefit of using a full page shows when doing large surfaces. Also things go a lot more smoothly and quickly if you use a low tack spray adhesive from Loctite etc. Sprayed directly on the page. The tape generator would never be a full replacement for the tape, just a nice addition to the toolbox.
@nolancraw
@nolancraw 3 жыл бұрын
Also you are adding tape directly onto the area to be engraved, this is pointless because the camera does not see directly where you are engraving, when doing small areas. so you are essentially wasting tape.

Session 0026 goes into block printing with Origin, and specifically how to mill linoleum. What if you milled several of the dominoes on a strip of linoleum and wrapped it around an ink roller? If this worked then you could lay regular tape (or not) on the stock and roll the domino pattern out and wait 3-5 min to dry. Perhaps there's an edge guide to ensure that the ink roller does not cause any warp? Or make a block print with one or a series of domino’s that you can just press onto the srf.
@Woodensoul
@Woodensoul 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the idea. I don’t think it would work for wood though. I suspect that the ink would blur at the edges due to the wood grain and that the SO would not recognize the dominos. But even if it would work, it sounds like an awful lot of work to do each time
@benkotis5389
@benkotis5389 3 жыл бұрын
@@Woodensoul Thanks for the quick reply. I agree, it probably is time consuming. In any case I’ll test it out because I am interested in print making. Also have you tried spray adhesive on a full sheet? It should stick to the wood really well, and to remove it spritz mineral spirits all over it at the end and when you rub it down the paper should just come off. Any sticky residue from the remaining adhesive can quickly be scraped off with a putty knife. This is not cheaper with the cost per can of spray adhesive and printing, but if it’s time sensitive and your waiting on shaper tape it could do.

As (I think I) mentioned in the comments of the other video, someone I saw just printed out sheets of shaper tape with ~3" gaps between rows and stuck them across the project as full sheets of paper. I've seem some people use spray adhesive to glue down the paper but that can be harder to pull up and messy if leave it stuck for more than several hours. Someone in a comment I saw said they do the above, just put down painters tape, then spray the adhesive to the painter's tape, then stick the full sheets of printed shaper tape. Still haven't had time to try all this out yet, but will report back once I do... ... assuming I keep my shaper. I have until the end of the week to decide. I love the idea of it but I'm still new at woodworking and building out my shop. I could buy a nice bandsaw, miter saw, and decent jointer for the price of the shaper, which seems like a cool tool, but also somewhat limited vs. those other tools combined. I'm open to anyone's thoughts though!

Thank you for your ideas. Indeed multiple people suggest either the label printing or the full sheet paper method (which works well if your workpiece is large enough). I am collecting ideas and might try out a couple more soon. Regarding your question on keeping the Shaper: If you are lacking a bandsaw, miter saw and jointer, then I would definitively recommend you to return the Shaper and buy these tools. While I love the Shaper, I consider it a luxury tool, that you can add to your inventory once you got the basics right. So I would recommend to first buy the other tools, and later the Shaper.

Have you tried printing onto Avery 05422 label paper? Exact size match for the Dominos (US measurements if it matters). And they’re supposed to be removable. Shaper tap comes out to $0.18 per domino. These labels are about $0.01 per domino if they work.
@thomasessex1587
@thomasessex1587 2 жыл бұрын
I was off with my math. I was thinking a 15’ roll, not 150’. So, the official stuff is about $.02 ($.018) per domino. So at this point, I’m more concerned about continuing access to the supply should something happen to the company rather than cost of the tape.
@Woodensoul
@Woodensoul 2 жыл бұрын
I was about to answer that your math is off. I just did it for prices in € and it's 0.016€ per Domino, so similar to the tape, but less work. If you print on regular paper instead of Avery you can go below that, but it's fiddly. The risk of Shaper going out of business is slim, given they have been acquired by Festool, so have decent funding to back them up.

@@Woodensoul Outside of Germany, you have to stay below 50€ to avoid customs fees, which would make the purchase price of the rolls overpriced. DHL will charge a 20€ administration fee regardless of the value of the package. 3x16€ + 20€ = 68€ for three rolls is objectively too expensive.

@@arsenez Thanks man, I know about the import fees (as I pay them often). Yeah, I didn't explore the labels yet. There are many great questions in the comments, but overall I am not that much into self producing my ShaperTape, so it's on my to-do list :D

Try masking tape instead, and why put the tape where you are engraving? Also can the print not go landscape giving longer lengths of shaper tape
@Woodensoul
@Woodensoul Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "masking"? There are legit reasons on why you sometimes need to put tape on areas you will route over, especially on larger work pieces. And yes, you can go landscape.

I am just evaluate the system before buying one. Why cut the printed paper into pieces?
@Woodensoul
@Woodensoul 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ernst. There is no need to cut them into pieces - I just did that for the testing to find out if they hold well. You can just stick the entire sheet on the workpiece. I do have a getting started video that shows you the details, if you are evaluating.

This is awesome. For a $3400 tool I think it's ridiculous they have proprietary tape that you MUST use for their product to work correctly. Companies making you continuously have to drink from ONLY their well are scumbags. Imagine buying a Rigid brand router that would refuse to work with Diablo router bits?

Hi Rick. In general I agree with you, but to defend Shaper a little bit, I never felt that they are trying to rip us off with the Tape. This device requires dominoes for orientation, and the Workstation or Plate try to reduce that dependency as good as possible. The fact that did not do anything against this tool to print your own tape also shows that selling tape is not their primary intention. But yes, I agree that having this alternative way is great.

You’re hilarious. Your using a 4K tool and shooting a video in your wine room (full wine room btw!) and your trying to save a few dollars on the tape. Bad ass and exactly what I might do too ;) my that was to use dynamo tape to print it. Cheers!

Hi Austin. Haha... that's right! To be fair, I am not using self-printed tape very often. I did the video to help others, who would like to use the self printed tape. I think it's a useful option to have. What is dynamo tape?

Why? What is your time worth? If you have this tool, you should be getting good money to use it! To think your time is best spent trying to save…. What a few dollars? To cut out this stuff, and all is time consuming! What if you spent the time finding more work? Your issue isn’t saving 3 dollars, it’s top line sales! If you spent 2 hours looking for consulting work, I’m confident it would be a far better investment of time.

Hi Barney. It’s adorable that you think I am making money with woodworking, but as a matter of fact, this is not my job, therefore investment and money making is irrelevant to me. And, to answer your question „why?“, it’s because I can. I was curious to see if it works and how. Am I using self printed ShaperTape myself? No, usually not. If you watch some of my videos, I never use it. But then again, I have the budget, others might not.

Just in case anyone was wondering. I tried placing a good handfull of Festool dominos on a workpiece to see if that worked. Nothing. Once I receive the Shaper I'll try it again and get back on the matter.
