@@sailinghjem I have been trying to get practical information on appication of silic one and other antifouling and noone else demonstrated how to roll paint CORRECTLY and a bunch of other tips. (I have always assumed I could already roll paint my way--but was it the right way?) . Its also kinda nice to see a video where people are dealing with cold and wet--i live on the Clyde.

@@peterdunbar4973 thanks again Peter. I was surprised to learn that there’s more to painting with a roller than just slapping it on and rolling away! We were happy to have the guidance of our friend Chris! And oh aye, it was Baltic cold with bloody awful wind. Just like in your neck of the woods 😀

finally someone found out what Cyril and Cedrik are... thanks! Keep asking myself that same question, since the eighties.

Hello guys, can't stay away. Looks like a good job, and no more difficult to put on than an ablative antifoul. However, down here in Plymouth, I was told by the marina chandlery that the yard refuse to lift any boat that has Silic applied. Apparently there have been major problems with boats slipping out of the slings! - perhaps the insurers have a view on this - I don't know. Meanwhile I'm on my third year of Coppercoat, which only needs a jet spray and a once-over with a scotchbrite pad (to expose the copper). I'm with one of the major marina's, so I'd be slightly nervous that the other major's also have the same policy?

Hello Peter! A cross strap should be used between the slings as with a long keeled boat. Insurance companies usually deem this to be standard practise, so ours told us! Boatfolk had no issue with holding us in the slings over the Easter weekend (we’re still in them now!). When we lift out wet we’ll also be asking for plastic wrapped straps as well, which also helps given the slipperiness. Least they can do considering how much they charge for lifts these days!

I had a boat next to me use Silicone (we have 8 year old CopperCoat, which is brilliant and easy to patch on a steel boat!)... The other boat got an ex-military silicone *really* cheap from Boogey Nights (If you know... you know!) It went on fast, and the whole undersides felt like they were coated with rubber... Very odd to the touch... Absolutely brilliant if you are in cold water and the fouling will just "Sponge" off, but don't use a scraper! He is sailing around the UK and can haul out regularly for a gentle scrub off it suits his needs very well. We are in warm water... Where there is no such thing as a 100% effective antifoul, you just have to dive and scrape every few weeks!

Thanks for sharing your experience! It does feel rubbery when it’s dry, but goes super slippy when wet, very odd. The water here never gets warm enough to dive in the boat without a good wetsuit, so we’re looking forward to getting to warmer climes and seeing if it is really feasible to simply wipe any fouling away with a sponge!

Cyril went to the darkside after being laid off, pretty sure he was Watto in the phantom menace 😅 I think it was Ryan and Sofie who i seen do the silicone antifoul in some distant boatyard, remember something about a timerestraint between the primer coat (pink) and the binding coat (yellow) being important. Mechanical and chemical bonding of the epoxy maybe? How was it cost wise?
@sailinghjem
@sailinghjem 6 ай бұрын
Poor Cyril 😂 Four hours minimum between the pink and yellow coats at 10 Celsius is what I read. There’s some epoxy in the yellow coat that binds to the epoxy in the pink coat so it probably needs time to happen. We were lucky enough to be given some samples to try out, but the cost would have been about £300 for a 41 ft boat 👍
