If you ever use a pot or maybe something like the bear bowl on direct fire, you can put dish soap on the outside bottom and it will burn the soap instead of the pot and then it's super easy to wipe the soap off. Keeps your outdoor pots from getting all black.

It looks like a sheet of Teflon. That stuff is waterproof and can handle a TON of heat. I use it to cook things on bc it's nonstick. It can handle like 500 degrees before not being safe for food. But can handle a lot more before burning or degrading.

We used to boil water in paper bowls over open fires. It's actually a really simple explanation. Water boils at 100 degrees C so the paper, that needs 230 degrees C to burn, won't get any hotter than that. So as long as there is water in the bowl any material with a higher flame point than 100 C will work.

In the Army we had these things called Mess Tins, you could fill them with water or food. They then boiled water or heated food when exposed to a heat source. The cooking device is just mess tins from a newer material.

Bananas are not straight, especially as straight as that doohickey. I also don’t think I’ve ever wanted to fill a banana but I am curious. I’d buy it for the lolz. 4. Radiate portable campfire: 8/10 - It’s actually pretty cool & convenient. Great for chilling in the back yard & making s’mores with kids. If you're feeling adventurous though you could concoct some kind of fruit and/or vegetable smoothie to fill it with. When the portable campfire was acting like it was going out after you put the lid on but then instantly reignited with force due to the air crack in the lid is called “backdraft”. The lid snuffs the oxygen so the flame dies down but since the lid was cracked, it left just enough oxygen to keep a wick or two just barely smoldering. The flame had been burning for over 30 mins so the whole thing had built up some heat by this point to retain the smoldering ember as well. As soon as you open the lid and reintroduced oxygen back to the smoldering ember… BOOM you have what is called backdraft when the hot gasses (smoke) or a smoldering heat source has enough oxygen saturation reintroduced back to into it to reignite the source with a little bit of force. In larger examples, backdraft can be an extremely violent reaction and the death of many firefighters if they don’t read the scene correctly and identify the signs.

You should use the banana thing to fill a pickle with chili paste. Something that might actually be a good use for it is filling brats with cheese. Another not completely terrible idea would be to core some frozen brownies/cake and fill them with ice cream or whipped cream. When you cringe at this, just remember that you asked for terrible suggestions.

The term you're looking for is backdraft. Acts like an explosion, it's when a fire in a confined space runs out of oxygen but is still super heated, and then there's a sudden introduction of oxygen and it self reignites from the heat already there

The bear bowl would probably not work well without the water in it. That said a camping hack I learned ages ago is the fact you can put water into a paper cup and drop an egg in and make a hard boiled egg by putting the cup directly on hots coals and ash from a fire. The quick search I did says it works because paper butns at a higher temp than water boils. This bowl probably works in a similarly.

Tyler, firefighter here chiming in on the candle, what you experienced is called a flash over. This happens when you have combustible smoke that either reaches its combustible temperature or is introduced to a spark. Check out some videos on here about them
