The most difficult chrome look to do is a shiny finish on the back side of transparent materials. So far I know of only two paint products that can do it. Spaz Stix Ultimate Mirror Chrome and Rustoleum Mirror Effect. Spaz Stix was developed for painting on the inside or outside of vacuum formed Lexan radio control car bodies. As long as the surface is smooth as glass you'll get a silver metallic surface that is as reflective as vapor deposited aluminum on glass. This Spaz Stix paint will also work on styrene and hard urethane resins. I use it to replicate the look of vapor deposited aluminum on the back side of urethane replicas of plastic car parts. The company makes black and white backer paints and a clear coat for use with Ultimate Mirror Chrome. Spaz Stix paints come in tiny spray cans or bottles for use with an airbrush. The price is $$$. The Rustoleum paint is a bit less shiny than the Spaz Stix and it is only for back side (second surface in mirror terms) application. The exposed paint surface looks like any "metallic" silver paint. I don't know how well or if it will work on Lexan but it works on hard urethane. It *does not work* on styrene. The carrier solvent attacks styrene. It was formulated for use on glass. Rustoleum also makes a "gold" version but it's nowhere near as shiny. It doesn't make a truly reflective "gold" mirror out of a piece of glass like the silver Rustoleum or the Spaz Stix will. These Rustoleum paints come in a larger spray can than the Spaz Stix paint, and cost less. All other "chrome" paints I've tried present a "silver metallic" look when viewed through a transparent material, the same no matter how chromelike the front surface of the paint film is. This should be a test of all "chrome", "silver", and "mirror" paints. Use a piece of glass, a piece of Lexan sheet, a piece of styrene sheet (a CD jewel case lid works great with Spaz Stix), and a transparent hard urethane test piece. Smooth-On Crystal Clear 202 is what I use, but to test the paint's "chrom-iness" the front and paint side surfaces have to be glass smooth.

Best chrome reviews on the Internet for airbrushes. I will quickly check if I can find that one from Zero paints. My store doesn't have the Spaz Stix and Molotow is super shiny but I can't seal it. Sometimes I forget to seal what I've done and then I can't seal anything anymore with the Molotow chrome on top.

All of the ultra realistic chrome paints are the same thing. They were developed for the special effects, art and automotive industry. It was developed in Germany and is usually sold by the gallon. Maltow put it a marker form for touch-up. It sells for $100/gallon retail. Unfortunately it lasts only 6 months in the bottle. There are ways to extend the life, this is one way, add alcohol but it loses the effect a bit.

Great information. I use SMS Hyperchrome. Have you tried it? It looks great over any surface. I sprayed it over bare plastic, primers, and paints. Great results. You apply it in very light dust coats. And then buff it to a high gloss shine.

I figured out the issue. You gotta use this stuff over either a black or white undercoat that has to be high gloss. High gloss paint works absolute best for gold and high gloss black works best for chrome. Otherwise you really are missing out so much with the paint. It will look literally like chrome on a brand new rim. You will see how crazy of a difference it makes.

I wonder how it stands up to handling, masking, and decal setting solutions? I found that using Molotow you need to reeeeeally flood it on. You might have sprayed it too thin.

yeah you have to spray this REALLY wet. if you do it right, it looks exactly like chrome, like dead-on. the good thing though, it refuses to run, you can seriously put on layer after layer of wet coats until it's perfect. the handling is fine after 24hrs. I haven't tried masking it or putting decals on it, would be curious about that too

can't wait for you the other chrome stuff. oh you defiantly need to go back and try molotow again apparently you can thin it out and it work better rather than strait to airbrush they have a video them-self. also it made me wonder if you ever tried sanding a before chrome painting like a high grit of 600-5000 so maybe it stick better and or maybe you can go heavier to smooth out cuz there grove the chrome can stick to now . nice work as always

The mistake you keep making with brushing chrome on is you DAB it on so it flows out into itself. You don't use strokes because it dries so fast that the strokes dry.

Nice to see you test it! Btw, have you tested Humbrol metalcoat? They come pre thinned for airbrush in the regular tins, or as spraycans. I have only tested it with a normal brush on some track pads on a tank model kit. Rubbing it with a cotton bud is supposed to give you a mirror like effect, it did not work that well when I tested it, but I belive you need more than just two brush strokes as the enamel paints evaporates while drying.

Great video as always!! I have found Alclad works the best for chromes, they get the job done without being too shiny and thus the model doesn't come out too toyish. Black wash, India ink, Tamiya Panel liner (All the same stuff) over kit chrome ends up looking toyish and patchy (Non uniform), though in the grills itself panel wash does a great job after swabbing off the excess. So far for metals the Alclad lineup has worked out best for me, soon as I get more colors from MR. Hobby metal lineup I can do a safe decision.

Gonna have to give that green stuff a try. The AK Super Chrome really does remind me of a stainless steel. I think it has a place and would look nice in certain applications but I wouldn’t call it chrome. That green stuff chrome and Allclad really are the best options. I’m definitely interested in the finishers tests. I’ve got access to some. Might have to stock up 😬

Great overview, Alclad is always solid, GSW just seems to work and became a staple for me. But if I'm really looking for that perfect chrome, for me it has to be Happiness over 2K black base from Korea. It's like spraying a near damn perfect mirror with that deep metallic feel most paints lack. It's a bitch to get a hold off and had to use one of those local shipping services but was worth it for when you want to go all out on a kit

Personally I prefer the airbrush chrome paint from Spaz Stix (makes paint for RC car bodies) over Alclad chrome. With Alclad if you put on too much it just goes silver where the Spaz Stix if you spray on too much it still produces a chrome finish. Also the Spaz Stix goes further as I have been able to paint 3x-4x as much using the same amount of paint. Also during my tests I found that you can put chrome paint over any color of paint and still get a chrome finish so long as it has a gloss finish. The only difference the base coat makes is how light or dark the color is affects the brightness of the chrome (at least for the two airbrush paints I mentioned above). I have done a few parts with black sections over white then applied the chrome and you could still see the pattern in the chrome.

With the Patriot it only calls for 15 to 18 psi. The Patriot is known for working at a low psi. It's even what they say to use in the manual

As someone who manages stock of one set of products for the company I work for. It's hard man. Costs go up real quick like if you want to keep large stock piles of things on hand. It ties up a lot of money in storage costs and the product itself of course. You have to go by past statistics and hope for the best really.

I'm surprised you didn't try a lacquer clear over it, just to try something different. Also, what did you use to thin the Tamiya? If it was Mr leveling thinner I wonder if you would have worse reactions using Tamia thinner or something closer to alcohol given that it has an alcohol base
