I have had the R7 since the day after they began shipping. It has some really nice image quality with the RF 100-500mm. I have the R6 which has been my primary bird camera for 18 months or so. I honestly would have preferred a APS-C sensor version of the R6. I certainly would have been willing to pay $1000 or so more for a better EVF, 3rd control dial, and a faster readout sensor. I have been trying to decide for several months between the OM Systems OM-1 and the R7 for birds. I hate using 2 systems. I have to think too much about the control differences. I don’t care about sensor size at all. We are on the verge of sensor size not mattering much with the way software is going. I have been using Topaz Photo AI the last month or so and it gets better every single update. The R7 is one I will have to keep for the moon shots. The camera is fine in low light. The AF does really slow down as the light goers away. The OM-1 will focus very quickly even in terrible light. The R7 is a great camera. I wish it had had slightly better specs but for IQ it is amazing. In good light the AF is maybe a hair faster than my R6. Never as fast as the OM-1 though. For now I am selling my R6 because of the reach difference. The video is better on the R7 IMO. The 4K crop mode is great for birds. The RF 100-500mm is a great lens. Easily the best I have ever used for birds. I try to shoot lots of Hummingbirds and the R7 is not good at racking those. Neither is the R6. The first day I had the OM-1 this summer I got 162 sharp images in a row of a Hummingbird in flight. It was right at sunset in the shadows so they weren’t great pics but all of them were in focus. We went to Alaska the week after and I ended up a taking the OM-1. It rained pretty much the entire week so I think the OM-1 ended up the best choice. I got caught in a pretty significant storm in August with the R7 and it wasn’t fazed at all other than the AF was confused by the rain. So, now, I am keeping both systems. I am selling the R6. The best camera of the bunch but it doesn’t really fit my use case of 98% birds. I can’t really justify the $7500 for the F4.5 150-400 Olympus lens. The wait list is about a year long. If I could just order one and have it a few days later I might sell everything else and buy one. Good luck with R7. I think it’s the best camera in the world for the money.

Def agree with you 💯 on the excitement. I came from using a canon 200D and a sigma 150-600 combo, been using the canon r7 with 100-500. Been great, took me a few weeks getting use to speed also coming from 5 FPS.

If you don't mind me asking, have you used the 150-600 Sigma with the R7? I know it will take a converter to do so, just wondering if you have and how it performed. I have that lens and am looking at the R7.
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom Жыл бұрын
No I haven't. I currently have a lot of focus breathing and auto focus issues with my 150-600 that I just rarely use it compared to my 100-500. Maybe it's just my copy of the lens.

Hey Adam, I've heard there have been mixed results with the combo of R7 and sigma 150-600. For me all of my shots were soft and out of focus. Others have no issues at all. It's kind of a luck of the draw. I know there was a video from Duade Patton a few months ago about tweaking some of the focus settings and case settings that help some people but at that point I lay away the canon rf 100-500 and my fiance uses the sigma on her canon 7d mkii.

I'm really feeling your excitement my friend. As I am getting ever so close to making a purchase myself. That eagle looked a very long way off, and you seem to have been able to pull off a nice shot. Very impressive little camera. And of course the photographer himself 😄

I enjoyed the video since I'm always trying to gather the impressions of photographers using the Canon R7 and the 100-500mm zoom. Maybe Canon will extend the deck of the R7 Mk2 a half-inch just to give your fingers enough room to slot in between grip and the larger lenses. I don't think I've ever heard a photographer complain about grip being too deep. Had a chance to hold a Canon R3 recently. Amazing feel to that camera. Found myself wishing it was the new R7. That would be the king of all cropped-sensor cameras.
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the grip is just a little tight with the 100-500. With gloves on it could be a little difficult. Overall the r7 is great for the money. As for the r3, I totally agree.

Solid photos! There is a big waiting line for R7 here in Norway, can't wait to get mine. I was testing R5 the other day, I went to shoot Oslo marathon with it and I also was bit annoyed by AF jumping from eye to eye, I changed something in AF setting, something about AF priority? So after that it stayed locked on first subject until it was gone out of frame, You should try to tweak AF settings. Do You have any experience with RF to EF converter?
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. I'll have to check. I have the EF to RF adapter but primarily used it with the sigma 150-600. The R5 is a phenomenal camera and it was going to be the one I pull the trigger on, but my old truck motor seized up and I needed a new car. Priorities 🤣 🙄 the r7 will get the job done for a while. For the price it's fantastic and yeah it can be hard to find one depending on your location. Happy Shooting 📸

I‘d love to use the R7, but man it is small😂 only had it in my hands for a few minutes but constantly slipped of the grip so as Canon decided to not sell a battery grip it‘s no camera for me😢 but totally understand the excitement, regarding specs/performance it‘s an amazing piece of tech

I have large hands, (I can palm a basketball easily). Since coming from DSLR D3, D700 Gripped to mirrorless Nikon Z50, I now pick up camera + lens with my left hand. It changed my whole approach with grip etc. my right-hand grips the camera but not tightly. Kinda like archery where the grip of the arrow is minimal. I'm able to get a lot more stable images, especially in low light. The other thing that has happened is that the rubber grips on the z 50 have not peeled off after having it for 3 years!

"It's not full frame equivelent..............................." What does that even mean? Ok, it's not a full frame camera - well we know that, it has a crop sensor. If you mean that the pictures are not as good as the pictures from a full frame camera, you are very wrong. A few years back, a number of photographers were asked to pick 10 photos out of 20 (I believe) and prove that you could tell a full frame shot from a crop sensor shot. Each of them refused to take part in the test. When amateur photographers have tried this they have failed to prove that anyone can really tell the difference. For bird and wildlife photography, the crop sensor really does make a lot of sense, especially in good light. The use regarding noise has been improved by new sensors (although the sensor in the R7 is from the 90D, so this doesn't apply to this camera!) and noise reduction software AI. The later being a game changer. The real question is why did Canon design a camera for wildlife when there is no proper weather sealing? That is just plain stupid. It's ideal if your idea of wildlife photography is sitting in a car but for most people, that's stupid. The buffer gets hit in one second so you are forced to use CompressedRAW. If it was as good as RAW, then RAW would not exist. And the sensor is second-hand from the 90D. The competitors are queuing up. The X-H2S knocks the R7 out of the ballpark, so far you can't even see it. A bit more expensive but Fuji have a proper range of lens and are cheaper. With a stacked sensor, faster fps, deep buffer, excellent weather sealing, it's the best at the moment. And if you are really on a budget, buy the R10, it does virtually everything the R7 does for less and after all, you can't shoot the R7 at 30 fps anyway.

Wow that's a lot to take in lol. I agree with everything you said. I was just pointing out it's performance capabilities how we shouldn't expect the same performance in low light as full frame. (As every review channel seems to be bashing the low light performance of this camera) But I totally agree. The R7 should have been fully weather sealed because the market and target customer of that camera is mainly wildlife photographers. It's still a great camera. Thanks for your comment. Happy Shooting 📸

I hate the buffer even with a v60 sony tough ush-ii I have to wait a long time to review even one photo. It is annoying. Idk if it's just mine or if it is a common issue. If I take 10 photos in a row I gotta wait a minute + to review my photos.
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 2 жыл бұрын
yeah the buffer on the r7 is pretty slow. 1 second is pretty bad however I havent experienced anything over an 8 second wait time though for refresh. I try to feather the buffer while shooting to prevent hitting it. Works well once you get used to it. Hopefully if theres an r7 mk2 in the future, it fixes this issue
