Having solve cubes since the mid 80s, I've heard the "peel off the stickers" answer for decades. I think the statement held more weight back then when a) cubes were much harder to turn and solve times took minutes instead of seconds and b) since there was no modern internet, it was a lot harder for the average person to learn to solve the cube. Now there is such a large cubing community and such a large number of youtube videos and websites to help people learn, that peeling off the stickers seems stupid. But back when I started, the only resource I had was literally ONE book that I found at a library 3 towns over. I love how far we have come and how the cube has endured through it all.

As a kid I peeled the stickers to get it back to original state. The original rubix cube had stickers that reattached pretty much without damage if you were careful. the hardest thing was to line them up right because if not you would have a cube with crooked stickers and that was kind of telling. Today you got a vast number of sources for the information. wasn't like that back in the day, so resetting to solved state required labor. And when peeling the stickers, you usually had gotten somewhere before giving up. Like done with fist two layers and at the "how can i do the last without messing up everything" stage.

When I first started I had the basic 3x3 Rubik’s cube with stickers. My daughter started playing with the cube and wanted to go to bring it to bed one night. The next day I started practicing and I soon realized that two stickers had moved and wasn’t sticking as much. Had a little talk with a smile of course. We eventually went out to get a new one with a 2x2.

I'm 49 years old. I remember when the Rubik's Cube (Ideal Toys) came out. Keep in mind, that in the 1980s, we didn't have WCA, or algorithms, or speedcubes, or even solve sheets that came with the cubes. This is when the "peel the stickers off" thing came into being. It was the intuitive "cheat" but yes, it always left the cube looking trashed, and most people didn't realize you could take the cube apart, nor did they know how to do that, so re-stickering was the only solution they could muster to re-solve a scrambled cube. Also, we didn't have the Internet, or places to get re-sticker sets, so once you took the stickers off, I'd imagine the cube was pretty much trashed. I can't say first hand, as I never went that route back in the day, but I saw it done plenty of times. In the modern age of Internet, vinyl shops, speedcubes, and WCA with solving methods like CFOP, Roux, ZZ, etc, sure, peeling stickers seems silly, but when you hear that it's usually from an "adult" who isn't even aware there are learnable solutions to solving a cube.

I also cannot believe you did that 🤣🤣🤣 But you are right, that suprisingly too many people think this way 😥 But even more often they want to disassemble the cube to pieces and than assemble the cube back together... And this way can work also with the stickerless cubes. But for suuuure they will struggle with the color scheme 🙄 So they maybe can think that even this way it is not solvable 🤣 Especially when they place the centers wrong. 🤣 For such people some cubes are made so that you cannot disassemble them (bad ones for speedcubers) unless you destroy them so you cannot assemble them back together. So maybe you can try your time solving the cube by disassembling it and put back together the right way 😜 For sure it will not be so painful like this video 😁 Good luck!

I’m about the same age as Tony Fisher and back in the 80’s, I did know some kids in school that said they just pulled the stickers off (I believe one kid wanted to do that to my cube). I would have been pissed had they done it to mine as I knew they would never be the same. Also, back then you couldn’t order a new set to fix it like you can now. I don’t think the sticker quality was the same then either as what’s available now. Personally, I thought it made more sense to disassemble the cube than risk destroying the stickers (although I did know how to solve it and mainly took mine apart out of sheer curiosity - I don’t remember if I did that before I knew how to solve it or not). On a side note, the stickers were all uniformly square unlike most of the cubes today. Even mine were square and mine was some knock-off brand and not and actual Rubik’s - but they all seemed to have the same construction (even the few shape mods that were out). I still have mine and I have no idea who made it but it has a weird color scheme: it has all the same colors but black instead of blue (other colors are standard: white, yellow, red, green and orange). We also used Vasoline to lube them as there were few other options and “cube lube” hadn’t been invented. I found out the hard way that a little goes a looong way and I’m not sure I would recommend that now (not that there’s any need with all the products available that are much better). I feel like I should be telling this on a porch. “Grandpa, what were twisty puzzles like back then?” “We’ll, in my day...”
@cubingwithbemfly27804 жыл бұрын
On a side note: I don’t think anyone tried the “sticker” method as a way of speed-solving, just simply as a way to solve it as they typically got frustrated, gave up, and felt this was a way to “out-smart” the cube. Quitters. I imagine there were a few cubes that got “solved” by throwing them against the wall - problem solved.

Back in the day...before these fancy algorithms AND this fancy KZbin....before this internet...and...in fact...this fancy windows interface, there was no way to get solutions except to A. Find it or B. Send away for it. So it wasn't a matter of it being practical or fast. It was literally the only way to put it back in order...and...honestly I remember doing it 3 or 4 times and the stickers still stuck firm, so maybe they've changed the glue or something. Eventually, we figured out how to pull the rubik's cube apart and put it in order that way, and this spared the stickers which would eventually get frayed around the edges from being peeled off.
@FireflyX5L2 жыл бұрын
Ok I bet it’s way faster if you made sure that the centers were in the right place and you just made stickers switch spots 😂 My sis brought a classmate’s rubik’s cube home once and said that it was for me to solve and then she would bring it back. It was fairly obvious they tried the sticker-peeling method, because it was impossible. I just checked which stickers should be where and then I gave them new spots :)
