The cook kit was amazing Mark, what an awesome adventure. It was far from boring and you're always fun to watch. That was a sturdy pot of Chick-A'King and gave you the muscles to paddle back to the dock. Great job man, awesome vid!

Thanks brother! That cook kit is awesome! Keep your eyes open I will be cooking an epic meal in that thing soon. I have some great ideas for that thing. That lunch turned out great it will be revisited again for sure. Maybe next time I will cook eat it out of a bannock bowl......the kit was a little pricey at first glance but I paid $86 CAD for it But you get 2 pots, 1 fry pan wind screen, pots stand trangia stove and a pot handle. It is really light and easy to clean too. I cant wait to experiment with this on the Ice this winter. It's going to be lots of fun. Brother I am in love with that canoe. I have some trips in the works for that canoe. Maybe a couple of canoe camping trips next year will be in the works. All I do know is it will open up some good opportunities for some great times and videos in the future. I am glad you are back brother. Cant wait to see your next video. You have a great week and I'll talk to ya soon.

I've been using the Trangia stove and cooking kit for over 30 years now. It's a really elegant, simple and reliable system. I do a fair bit of winter camping in snow shelters and I have found the Trangia system to be very reliable even at very cold temperatures, but there are some things to bear in mind when using it in very cold temperatures. The first is that the burner itself can be carried in an inner pocket so that the stove and fuel inside it doesn't get cold, which means you won't need to pre-warm it as you described in the video. Something else to keep in mind is that pouring cold fuel around the outside of the burner won't work at very, very cold temperatures because alcohol does not ignite in it's liquid state. It's the alcohol fumes which ignite. If you do find yourself with a cold burner and only cold fuel to work with, the trick is to fill the burner in the usual way, then light a piece of paper or birch bark on fire and just set it atop the burner to warm the cold fuel and get it to give off fumes, at which point it will light. With respect to types of alcohol, a good clean fuel is methyl hydrate, which you can get in the painting department of Canadian Tire or the like. It's much cheaper than fondue fuel and burns clean and odor free and you can buy it in larger quantities for even greater cost savings. I do hope we have an opportunity to meet up sometime soon - perhaps in the spring - so we can do a little paddling together. There's a number of techniques I can pass along to help you on those really windy days. Happy paddling! - Martin

Martin that would be great. I could use a few pointers. The wind was only supposed to get to 20k 30k gusts but in that spot the wind channeled through the 2 islands and stopped me dead and started to push me backwards seemed like much more than 30k. It even blew my toque off. Freaked me out a little. I tried to get nose first into the wind so it didnt turn me around but it was tuff. I am not very experienced with a canoe yet but I'm learning. In the video I mentioned putting some alcohol on the burner because of the burner warmer thing that trangia sells. I think I would just keep it in my pocket as well. I stayed away from trangia stoves because of the fuel. I saw too much opportunity for a spill. I saw the wood alcohol at home depot and it was cheaper for sure but passed on it until my bottle arrives. I plan on trying a few different fuels and see what works best availability wise. I hope we can arrange a meet up at some point. I think it would be a great time. Have a great week my friend.

Picked up two more vintage fly rods on the weekend. Fondue fuel is cheaper than the meths I bought. Dollar store? Nice eating stick! Food looked great! I have a trangia and a stick stove that it fits in. Not as good of a windscreen as you have. Think of all the calories you burned off getting back to the boat launch. Thank you for taking us along, Mark
@AdventureTimeOutdoors
@AdventureTimeOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Where are you finding these fly rods? Are they in good shape? I picked up 4l of meths for 7$ and was less than half price. I didnt think of checking the dollar store though. I'm going to check. Getting out of that windy section and going up wind was brutal. I jacked up my elbow a little too. I fished that whole bay and then did 2 more trolling runs before calling quits. I paddled for about 5 hours. Cant wait to get back out. Next time with some bait.
@shovelhead8
@shovelhead8 6 жыл бұрын
These two flyrods would make you cry. A bit of dirt on one cork, and the other one looks almost new. No reels. Nice aluminum cases. I picked up a 5 piece rod and reel in the original cloth bag, not a real collector piece, earlier in the year. And last month it was a Daiwa combo set, in the case.Fly and spinning set, depending on how you put it together. Missing the spinning reel, but I had a spare. Funny, I did not see any nice bait casting rods this year. I can take some close-up pictures if you want me too. Thank you for the reply, Mark

Just on my usual yard sale videos. Nothing in detail. I can do some close-ups for you and send them email. The pair of rods has no markings that I could see. Looks like hand wound guides. The 5 piece is OK,not a real collector item. The diawa is probably just a user, but the price was right. Let me know and I will take some pictures.

What a great video man! Loved the paddlin and fishin and cookin...awesome. There is a specific winter pan thats made for those, but it amounts to a plate and sprinkling fuel on it as a preheat, like you already mentioned. I used an aluminum pie plate on a couple of sticks. Great outing man, thanks !

Glad you liked it man. I got my first 👎after 5 views. I was getting nervous! Well the wind was a challenge for this canoe noob but i am getting better with each time out. I figure paddling on the saint Lawrence river with the current and the wind when I get on a real lake it should be a breeze! I dont know if you know Pinemarten but he had a great suggestion of putting a piece of birch bark or paper on or beside the stove it warm it up in extreme cold to get the alcohol to light. I saw that little dish and was thinking no way I spend money on that. Too many diy options for that. I plan on trying many different meals in this thing. I'm working on baking bread in it. That will be in an up coming video. Thanks for watching man it's always great to hear from ya. I hope you and Tammy are doing well.

Great video dude! Always had problems with alcohol burners while ice fishing in minus 30. Also found that if I left fuel in the burner, when it got warm out and the vapours expanded, made the burner no longer air tight and it leaked afterwards. You should be out Musky fishin...they got the feed bag on right now!

I know those big girls are on there way from the deep. I lost 3 lures trying to catch one during this video. I will be out again soon. Lol I am looking forward to testing these stoves in the cold! They have to be better than those propane/butane stoves. Even the one they market for winter doesnt work well under -15.. thanks for the heads up on the expansion issue. I will look out for that. Hope everything is good brother. That Cleaver was gorgeous! Have a great week. ATB Mark

Sticking a couple of those disposable hand warmer things under the gas cylinder of your stove, or under your alcohol stove, may give enough heat to get them running.

Hard to beat the old Army M1950 gas stoves. Heavy but good lighting, and lots of power for the cold weather. I imagine a wrap or two of plumbers felt around the alcohol stove might help, but it would not fit in the windshield then.
@AdventureTimeOutdoors
@AdventureTimeOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
@@shovelhead8 I think I will just keep it in my pocket. Lol once it is lit it is no problem with the alcohol. It's not like the pressurized canisters that need to stay warm. I have had battles with those in really cold weather and will never use them again.

I'd love to know how much of that fuel is required to boil 1 litre of water in that setup, efficiency is really important for me because i do long multi-day treks through mountainous terrain and want to save grams where possible, seems like a really nice clean burning fuel indeed! Brother great to hear from ya. It is really a great kit. There is a totally non stick kit but I found the aluminum pots cleaned just fine. I love cooking with a wood fire too but after this dry summer and all the time I spend outside in winter I needed a better option than canister stoves. I am sure you will like it. My good friend Pinemarten told me that methyl hydrate works great in the stove with no smell or soot aswell. I bought some and will test it soon. I got 4L for $7. If it burns as well as fondue fuel it will be a great savings. Have a great week my friend
