A hands on review of the Trangia 27-5UL cook set. The -5UL means 5 pieces Ultra Light. I wanted to cook a meal on this set to give it a real review and my thoughts on it.
I can honestly say it is a fantastic cooking system and would recommend it to anyone who wants a simple cooking system that works exactly as it should.

When you want to heat up a cold burner, you can drip a small amount of fuel into that little "moat" around the outside of the ring of jets. Light that as well as the fuel in the middle. Various ways to drip it. Simplest is to dip a twig in the unlit burner then drip a few spots of fuel from the twig into the moat.

Excellent description of how the burner works with the liquid turning to gas as it's heated. Amazing little piece of kit.

Good Video Paul, the small hole is for the multi fuel adapter, as for the meths add 10% water to the meths, It will stop the pots going black underneath, it does work. I have 2 25's, a mini trangia and a gas adapter. I love them.

I thought I remembered this video 🙂. I loved it when I saw it the first time around. I think that is what I'll cook up for dinner tonight. It's been awhile since I served it up. I make it at home in my rice cooker by adding some brown gravy to make the rice cooker like steaming it better. Glad I ran across it again! Have a fine weekend 🤗.

i have a 25 and a 27 and use them all of the time, sometimes i cook full meals on the 27 with all of the pots and pans but i also take the 27 with me on dayhikes and hikes where i only need boiling water and strip it down to just the windscreens, the burner and the kettle. stripped down it doesn't weigh very much more than a trangia 28 and works fantastic in high winds with no additional windscreens. my favorite thing about the trangia 25 and 27 is that when you are using it, the pots and pans are always securely held in place and won't slide off or blow away easily. you can stir a pot with one hand and it won't slide off the stove.

One thing I really appreciate about my Trangia 25 is how quiet it is. I sometimes will use a Pocket Rocket .. with gas cannister for a really fast cup of hot water. It's a tad faster for just that...but the noise is imho quite irritating... and far less stable than the Trangia. Also the pocket rocket is very poor in the wind. All around... Trangia is the winner for me.

For me the best Trangia are the Storm Cooker 27-21 UL/D with Gas Burner, I have the Kettle 27 Small, 0.6 L and ditch the small pan, so one large pan and a kettle. I ditched the spirit burner many years ago, it takes much too long time to cook and uses too much spirit, so gas cooks much faster and uses not much gas, so it is a much more light weight solution with the gas burner ! Highly recommended.

Hello Paul, thank you for the video, I was wondering how the Trangia system worked, I liked the way you explained the smallest details, because they are all important. I was also thinking about the handle scratching the pans, it would be interesting to know if the rubber grommet versions are better? The video would have been even better without any music, just the sound of the birds and your voice. Thank you again!

Have the brass burner - the “incendiary Swedish doorknob” and a 1 liter Trangia fuel bottle. Bought them last year, for “just in case” on a trip to L.A. (by request of an aged parent). Am thinking to get most of the full set, for the following: 1) Ebike “travel”. Due to age and health problems, I will probably need to stay in either hotels or “improved” campsites. (Electric power will be required) This will mostly be for backup, and/ or wanting a warm meal while “on the road.” 2) power outages at home. These are rare - one to three a year - but have lasted as long as 16 hours. I *have* wanted warmed meals then. I have very limited cooking skills, so a typical meal will involve “boiling rice and veggies.”

I recommend putting the pot or kettle on as soon as you light it. It's just wasting fuel otherwise, plus the pot keeps the heat in and the burner blooms faster. I've never had one go out doing that.
