According to "Rifle Accuracy Facts" the density of the barrel adjusts the natural frequency of the barrel. This can work in favor for accuracy, but also work against it. it's important to note that the frequency not only varies with the barrel density, but also with barrel temperature, and how "fast" the rounds fired excite the barrel. One can absolutely make a light barrel just as accurate as a heavy barrel by adjusting ammunition, heavy barrels are just supposed to be more forgiving. Further, "Modern Advancements in Long Range Shooting" found barrel stiffness to be a factor similar to barrel density. This make sense because barrel weight and stiffness adjust the natural frequency of the barrel, and it appears the natural frequency is what impacts accuracy. Now, does this matter for the level of accuracy a general-use AR-15 is going for? not really IMO.
@itsapittie2 жыл бұрын
The funny thing about accuracy is that you can make a lot of generalizations but at the end of the day a rifle may defy all the conventional wisdom. I have a gently-used USGI M1 carbine that will shoot 1.5" at 100 yards all day long while my other two hold softball-sized groups which is normal for the type. Why? Who knows? Probably just a lucky combination of parts. I've seen expensive ARs that shoot crap groups and nothing seems to help. I'm not saying barrel construction doesn't matter -- it definitely does -- but only the very best shooters are likely to see a difference between good and excellent barrels.
@davidgoodnow2692 жыл бұрын
@@itsapittie It would be interesting to take all three of those M1 carbines, weigh the operating rods, and tap each operating rod and barrel to find their frequency. My guess is that the answer is either there, or possibly in the chamber throat, rifling, and crown. Slugging each bore would show if the rifling in the more accurate carbine is deeper and cleaner. If all of those come up a head-scratcher, it's possible the most accurate barrel is simply straighter with fewer tiny imperfections, but that should show up in the first, harmonic frequency, test. Lessons learned at a Type 56 Norinco factory.
@itsapittie2 жыл бұрын
@@davidgoodnow269 That's kind of what I mean by "lucky combination of parts." It would be interesting but I don't have the skills to do it or the money to pay for it. It would be tempting to say that the other two are just more worn but a new-from-the-factory M1 carbine typically wouldn't deliver 1.5 MOA. It's possible that it's been shot "just enough" for all the parts to wear in to a perfect match. IDK. It's kinda cool to have it, though.
@davidgoodnow2692 жыл бұрын
@@itsapittie It doesn't take any special gear or training (unless you slug the bore, but that just takes a .308-.310" pure lead bullet and a cleaning rod and a mallet). Next time you disassemble for cleaning, use a very quiet room. When you have them all broken-down and cleaned, before reassembly, take a spoon and tap each barrel while it is unsupported and listen closely. Same with each operating rod. That's all there is to it. If you don't have good hearing, but you do have a smartphone, you can use a spectrum-analyzer app on your phone to see the sound pattern. (Smartphones didn't exist back in the day, so it was the experienced ear of a person doing the sorting.)

Perfect clone!" but it handles and shoots just like the one I carried in the service and that was my goal. PSA probably is "good enough" for a lot of people.

A year or so ago a LGS had the complete "plain jane" WWSD lowers in stock for $235 IIRC. (I live in Alaska. It might be a little cheaper where you live.) I bought one on a whim and then had to decide what to do with it. Eventually I assembled it with an Aero Precision no-forward-assist upper, 16" pencil barrel, nitrided BCG, and aluminum free-float 15" handguard. I hadn't heard of the WWSD Civil Defense Rifle at the time but that's essentially what I ended up with. It's a little heavier than the WWSD but only by about 4 ounces. Most of the parts I had on hand, having bought them at various times when I got a good buy, so it's hard to be sure but I think it was about $850 total when I finished. Sights and optic added a bit. It's a little more accurate than my M4 clone, possibly due to the free-float barrel, so it's good enough for me. I think of it as more WWAD (What Would the Army Do?) than a true WWSD rifle. TBH, the items that drive up the cost of the WWSD vs the CDR are things that don't matter much to me. My first military rifle was the M16 (not A1) and every AR pattern rifle I've owned since has had the same control layout. I have the muscle memory for it. I've shot a couple of ambi rifles belonging to friends and I didn't use the ambi controls. The captive buffer is a complete non-issue for me -- don't have it, don't care. A "match" trigger is a nice thing but as I'm just an average marksman, it doesn't appreciably improve my accuracy. The ultra-light carbon fiber handguard is a key part of the WWSD but TBH I choked on the price, I'm a little skeptical about its durability, and I didn't want to give up my backup sights. I understand that the point of the WWSD was to test the very edge of the envelope with a build with all the most advanced parts and that's very cool. If that's what you want, I won't criticize you for your choice in a rifle. I *really* like the CDR lower for its light weight, LOP, and flared magwell. Even if you just build it out with "usual" parts it's a handy and serviceable place to start at about the same price as other complete lowers. If, like me, you don't feel the "high-speed" stuff is worth the money, take a look at the CDR or consider building your own. IMO the KE Arms monolithic polymer lower is the thing that sets this rifle apart from the pack; the rest is window dressing. A CDR would make a very respectable first AR and all the parts already exist to upgrade it over time as you figure out what you want. I like it. If you're in the market for an AR or just want something different, I highly recommend the WWSD or CDR.

The JP SCS is probably the main factor in making this rifle as smooth as it is. Everybody claims they're just for the spring noise, but it truly does completely change the way the rifle feels. I will say that my old bcm mod 3 actually rides smoother than the geiselle but the geiselle is easier to unlock and ambi, when i got the bcm their ambi version wasn't out yet. I'm using a faxon pencil barrel and titanium adjustable gas block. I went with the 13" Faxon carbon for easier gas block adjustment access. may switch to 15" once I get it dialed in. I followed the original 2017 WWSD project closely and built my rifle as Carl and Ian released the videos back then. I upgraded to the KP-15 lower in 2021. My own preference was to use a LaRue 2 stage trigger, a Brownell's skelotonized BCG, Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, a Bravo Company M-Lok hand stop, and a standard buffer and spring. It's 5.01 pounds with the Sig Romeo 4T optic. My only complaint is that the KP-15 lower has a longer than preferred length of pull and the grip angle would be better with a Magpul K2/ sub-machine gun angled grip. The gun averages 2.5 MOA, it's not a target rifle. The Faxon barrel much prefers 62 grain green tip 5.56 rounds. It'll group closer to 1.5 MOA in my experience. Note; the original WWSD barrel was a 14.5" pencil barrel with a permanently attached 3 prong flash hider.

Thinner barrels will of course have different harmonics, they will have a higher whip amplitude. Thicker barrels will still have harmonics, but they dampen the whip amplitude. You can still custom reload ammo to fit these harmonic differences, but thinner barrels will have a far more narrow range of tight accuracy when adjusting the handloads. A change in seating depth of .003" is nothing on a bull barrel, it will still make documentable changes but nothing someone would usually describe as "dramatic". I would like to get test data on this more because I have only custom handloads for medium and bull barrels, but there the difference is still easy to notice.

Definitely not, this rifle is not suitable for combat. Carrying extra weight for no reason is dumb, but at some point you just have to suck it up because the gear you need has some weight to it. Without the ability to mount an ir laser or m203, this thing is all but useless to any organized military unit. The pencil barrel is also completely inadequate for the sustained fire of a firefight. I can’t imagine a single person with combat experience and firearms knowledge picking this over a block ii with a quad rail.

simple: the match grade stuff is loaded to very specific dimensions and primer/powder combination. your particular rifle happens to be at the middle of your barrel's node as opposed to being at the peak or through of the node

I would think what I have seen with pencil barrel being less accurate is from cheaper ones warping with lots of rounds though them and opening up. I would assume your pencil barrels aren't the 100$ specials that likely experience this, and the 100$ special socom/bull ect. barrels wont warp as easily so you dont see the groups open. Just a theory though.

As one of those 10% I sinisterly suggest you learn to work with it as I have never had a safety activate with any that are on the wrong side for those of us in our right minds.

The m193 accuracy snafu is something i have come across myself . Then i shot some into a water barrel the m193 jacket appears to be thinner and the rifli g of the faxon barrels when new can occasionally cause the jacket to peel and cause an aerodynamic irregularity shifting the point of impact several inches at 100. This issue seemed to reduce as the barrel broke it though. But then i also donot run m193 on my faxon barrels if i can help it.
