The wc grounds really expand watercolouring options. From experience I have found that the wc ground directly on colouring book pages still cause quite a bit of buckling as the ground doesn’t create a barrier to prevent the water from reaching the paper. By first adding a barrier and then the ground it works beautifully. The barrier I have tried and worked for me are both from Golden; Satin Glazing Liquid and the GAC 100 (sizing). These create a none absorbent layer between the paper and the grounds. To make the layers smooth, I too have both the Qor Ground and DS Transparent ( and their white), using fine grit sandpaper (180/240) between LIGHT layers of ground applications works to give a smooth result. With the Qor thick application as you have seen give rough watercolour paper results where two thin layers with sanding in between gives much closer to cold press paper results. Considering the prep time I usually am doing 3 or 4 pages from different books at a time since you should let each layer dry at least ~24hrs before applying the next. I have rushed it before with mixed results. Enjoy and have fun exploring the new possibilities the wc grounds give you. 😀

CeraChonaill Thank you for this very helpful comment. I purchased the Golden satin glazing liquid to use under watercolors in my coloring books, but haven’t had the nerve to use it yet. I was wondering if I bought the wrong thing for a minute.

Test either the Satin Glazing and/or the GAC 100 on a page in the book you are not fond of as different paper has slightly different reactions, some need an extra coat, some the GAC is better verses the Glazing and visa versa. But in general a plastic barrier which is what either of these creates helps the paper. Just remember you are not creating 300lb arches paper here so you still can’t drench with water affects.

One more note the Qor is not transparent as the DS is. If the intention is to see all the details from the colouring page DS transparent is the way to go. While you can water down the Qor to decrease the opacity it will never be true transparent to see details. Qor is best for your idea for rocks, and the DS for the books.

Lots of good points. And some great tips. I’m mainly planning on painting rocks or other unusual objects so I won’t be sanding anything anytime soon. But ‘thin’ coats is what I thought I was applying. 😂🤦🏾♀️ so that’s going to be something I’ll have to practice.

ColoringKaria You are very welcome. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and for sharing your wisdom and talent with us. I really appreciate it. My only question would be do you take requests for watercolor tutorials? I would love to know how to paint a Luna Moth in Watercolor and I am really struggling. There are only a few tutorials about Luna Moths but they are speed painting or acrylic so it's hard to learn from. Thanks again. Much Love and Respect, Stacy

the Qor ground works well if you put on with a pallet knife. the Daniel Smith I use a soft brush to apply it then work it back with a pallet knife. Remember all you have to do is fill in the texture on the canvas or surface. I use the Daniel Smith mostly and do 3 coats.. they say on the web site 2 is good but I like a very smooth surface to also add in some pen and ink.

PS: it will not work as a 300 lb cold press... thick washes.. etc. it works like a hot press with a smooth surface.. not so much of the big wash multiple colours .. I do a realism style and it works well for that

Using thevqor on canvas seems to be working well

I am using a smooth form of the Qor ground to create 3D flowers, then paint them. Thanks to this video, I will buy the Daniel Smith to just prime surfaces. They are useful for different things.

If you watch the Golden company video for the Qor watercolor ground, they say you can thin it with water and it then becomes more self levelling, and easier to smooth out.
@ColoringKaria6 жыл бұрын
Which video? Because I watched all of the videos on their website before making this.
@bobbijolane3676 жыл бұрын
ColoringKaria it’s on KZbin. If you search Qor watercolor ground and then the Golden video is there in the first 3 or 4 vids. I’d give you the link, but I’m not sure how to do that. 🙃. It’s just a short video. I’m not sure how much you can thin it by, but I did hear someone say 10% on another video. ✌️. I watched the video again (hadn’t watched it in a while) after I wrote this comment, and it says it can be thinned by using 4 parts ground and one part water.

Thank you! I started with adult coloring and have been teaching myself to draw so that’s why there is a mix of coloring and other art supplies on this channel. I try to do one coloring and one non coloring video at least every week.

Hi Karia, I got some pre-printed canvases for my birthday with really pretty illustrations to paint. I got a set of watercolors also and I am wondering if I use the Daniel Smith transparent watercolor ground on this kind of canvas would that hurt or mess up the illustration? The canvasses state they are "primed" already, but I'm pretty sure not for watercolors. So I'd like to try the Daniel Smith transparent ground but am asking your advice first because I don't want to hurt the pretty illustrations. Thank you if you can help : )

I cant say fro sure but i think it should work. also i didnt do it here but you should add a little water and apply 2 thin layers rather than one thick one. also i would test a small section first maybe in a corner before going all in and doing everything,.

Not gonna lie! The background music was a bit of a distraction....had me looking for the Ice Cream Truck!! Now I want either a Dreamcicle or a big ole Bomb Pop!!! LOL🤪🍦 Now on a serious note...Great video!! Had been looking for a good video on the comparison of these two products, yours fit the bill perfectly!! It looks like the DS would be great for when your piece calls for a less textured look, while the Golden’s would be great for those pieces that require a more textured look such as a mixed media or collage piece. It was helpful to see that both of these could be used with not only watercolor from pans or tubes, but that the pencils worked well on both with varied results! Thanks for a nicely done and informative video on these products. Of course a big Thank You for the walk down memory lane! Dang!!!! I miss having an ice cream truck in my neighborhood! 😃

How about that. Cheaper than buying watercolor paper. Just a tub of that and all paper becomes watercolor paper lol That lifting though, can you layer on it? Can you let some dry then try layering?

Used Daniel Smith transparent on canvas using watercolor paint I found the paint would just roll off and was not colorfast at all
@ColoringKaria3 жыл бұрын
You need to use watercolor ground on the canvas and properly let it set before using watercolor. Once you do that it should work on canvas the same as watercolor paper
