****** CORRECTION ****** I say in the video that the 14-color swatched painting is for $17 tier, I am wrong! To get the swatch painting, you need to be signed up to the tiers that receive original paintings ($15, $25 or $50). Sorry about the confusion, it was a long day of filming.

I have a YInMn Blue made by a handmade paintmaker. I hadn't used it recently and its age is similar to if not older than the Kremer one you have that doesn't rewet. I have just retested it and it re-wets perfectly. The handmade paint contains honey, so it's perfectly possible to have a YInMn Blue that stays rewettable. I think Kremer needs to look into the binder they are using and although it might be inconvenient, customise their binder for this pigment as I wouldn't purchase a pan of very expensive paint that won't rewet after five months. I'm very impressed with the depth of colour from the Kremer Chilean lapis lazuli. I'd like to see what they can do with the higher quality lapis pigments from Afghan sources, which are acknowledged as the best quality lapis lazuli in the world. I know Kremer sells a number of the Afghan lapis pigments but they don't currently have a ready made watercolour paint with them.

@@OtoKano I had forgotten at the time but some very hard mineral pigments can be activated with hot water. Although this is a synthetic pigment it might be worth trying as there's nothing really to lose. A small drop of glycerine added to the hot water may help as it will be drawn down into the block of paint by the hot water?

The YIn-Mn is €43 for one full pan - 30% of the price for the set. So I guess if someone is determined to buy the YIn-Mn, it could actually be worth checking the set out - at least if one wants some of the other blues too.

@@CeitDeVitto It’s pricey because they can charge that price for the exclusivity and know people will pay it. It’s really disappointing because I would love to try this paint for myself, but the fact it doesn’t even age well in the pan and becomes unwettable just says to me that it’s not worth it, even as an artistic ‘investment’.

Really wonderful whisky analogy for the YinMn Blue! Totally makes sense to me. Here's the thing, I LOVE a good granulating colour but I nearly peed my pants when I saw you swatch the Genuine Indigo and the Paris Blue. This palette is on my Christmas and Birthday (few days apart 🙄) list and I am buying a) because blues always float my boat and b) because I'm totally in love with the Paris Blue, Indigo Blue - the Ultramarine Violet isn't too shoddy either!. Not sure why this is going to be so far up my pressie list this Crimbo/bday because I paint primarily portraits and whilst of course I use blue, it's not like I need huge varieties, I can pretty much mix what I need. Landscapes/Seascapes and Abstracts here I come! Thanks so much for this swatching and run through. Such a pleasure to watch. Cheers from Australia!

SO informative! Thank you! I'm a big ultramarine fan. My bedroom walls are covered with 6 very thin layers of ultramarine blue diluted with glaze - it's intense, but almost transparent, like stained glass. YinMn blue strikes me as "BLUE," i.e., what I imagine when I think of generic blue. It doesn't seem to contain any red, yellow, or black, and while it's close to other blues, it occupies its own niche. Exciting!

Thank you for this review, it was very interesting to watch :) And yeah, I know what you mean about the "chalky" quality of Cobalt colors. In fact I just swatched Cobalt Blue Pale earlier (I got a half pan in my personal Advent Calendar) and I noticed that it was very opaque and "chalky". It also has a big drying shift when it comes to the color, the wet paint is a lot darker than the dry version, but it's pretty anyway.

I like a lot of these. I'm a cobalt nut so I'm not surprised that I live the cobalts, but the indigo was really pretty, the lapiz too, and of course the YIn-Mn immediately triggers my "want" impulse 😂 The price though... Not for me, not for a long while. IF I was going to get the YIn-Mn it might actually be worth getting the whole set, since I like a lot of the paints and the YIn-Mn on its own costs 30% of the price for the whole set. The rewetting issue with YIn-Mn is unacceptable though. For a €43 pan, I'd expect to be able to use it at my leisure... Maybe it would do better as a tube paint? Also: the azurite is disappearingly pale, I don't think I'd have much use for it at all.

Dr Kano. wow.....wow wow.... I am a blue pigment nerd too. Nice to know I can find a replacement for your ultramarine as it is always sold out. :) Oh my..... the Indigo genuine was a pleasure. I will have to get a lot of these colours from Kremer company, as I collect warm and dark blues. I don't collect phthalos for example and cobalts can be tricky, dull and as you say chalky. I have a lot of handmade ultramarines from etsy and some similar pigments that are handmade like the Italian one that Choosing Keeping sells, which is a lapis lazuli that is really strong and easily rewetted. My eyes popped as I saw it, just like with some of these....I mean wow! When I do my ultramarine swatching and testing, I will swatch them with the tiniest amount of white too. I love how thorough your test sheets are for "all conditions" to bring out the best in each colour, to find the pigment traits and personality...so will have to design something similar, but maybe not quite as large. QUESTION(S): What do you recommend in terms of optimum swatching, and would you change anything that you do now? Do you like to mix with the Holbeins particularly? Still looking for the least granulating Ultramarine, just like looking for a unicorn...my search continues, (and am yet to try Schmincke's finest as I have it as a half pan) I am all packed up, waiting for our new home to move into, no luck yet, so all of my things will go into storage, and will have to be patient till I have my new home ( and a studio with a desk near the window), to be able to do all my swatches and testing QUESTION(S): I wonder if you tip the older YinMn blue out of the half pan, and turn it upside down and then retest it? Perhaps the exposed top has oxidised or changed? I also wonder if it can be protected with some kind of clingwrap or foil? Everyone should have a mental health break, particularly in these modern times with everything going on. Thanks for doing the swatches for me on my behalf! In kindred spirit Eliza in Sydney Australia

Hi Eliza, lovely to hear from another blue lover :D I think if I were to change anything, I would change out the cadmium colors in the color mixing sections for more transparent colors. Only because I use more transparent colors and I never paint with cadmium colors personally. I feel I can’t change it though as then it’s not consistent throughout all the tests. Other than that, I am pretty happy. If you can think of any other tests you’d like to see though, I’d appreciate it :) I can’t actually get the old YInMn blue out of the pan :(

I was chomping at the bit when I saw this review notification pop up. I am a total blue fanatic. I wonder if someone will make that YInMn blue in tube colour? It would solve the problem. I have WN viridian in half pan that has become just like that, unwettable. I did find with that one, that when I popped it out of the pan, the underside gave up more colour. I don't understand quite what's happening but it was like the pigment had settled out and just left hard binder at the top, I don't know if that is even possible in solid form but that's what it seemed like. Might be worth just keeping it spritzed for a day or so to re hydrate it.

I leave you a quote from the email I had: "Shipping CL1Q1-0028-3 YInmn Bleu watercolor 5 ml.... $ 14 to below address via Fed Ex Economy would be $ 55.00 USD plus Duty VAT and taxes." $ 55, are they crazy??????????????? Anyway I live in Belgium. Maybe you have more luck.

Rewatching this video a year or so on, my favourite colour here is that gorgeous indigo genuine. Just to see the real thing is wonderful, there are all sorts of mixes to emulate it but it is not really the same thing, is it. I like the Lapis, but have a very nice one from a small brand. The ultramarine purple? Violet? Is absolutely beautiful. As is the dark cobalt turquoise. This is a company I love because I personally prefer characterful bold pigments over brands that even their pigments out for consistency.

I love kremer colours. I only have my set now, and I find them rather expensive. but I would love to have all of them. by the way, I love so much parisian blue. but never know, how to use it :-) of course, I can always try something abstract. but other than that? I would like to see that one in use or mixed or something - ifthat would be of interest to others as well

I’ve been wanting YInMn blue since I first heard about it. I knew Matisse acrylics had it but I didn’t know if anyone else had it. I haven’t heard anything since it initially came out ( not to the general public) And now they have it in watercolor. Omg!

That indigo looks gorgeous. It's so easy to forget how dark - almost black - it can look and that one can get such a nice saturated blue/ cool grey one can achieve when watering that down. I'm really new to this and kinda curious. Is the process of making indigo watercolour similar to that one used for dying cloth? And could one make that more lightfast like it is done by binding the pigment in fabrics 🤔 Also love the lapis lazuli 🥰

I know this is from 2 years ago, but I was looking for a certain color (not yinmin blue haha) and I love dark blues, darker-ish turquoises, deep/dirty purples and dark grungy greens...for some reason, yinmin blue just doesn't do it for me haha. The mixes are nice, but it reminds me too much of an ultramarine on it's own. I don't know. Haha as I'm typing this, you just said it's like ultramarine, but different 😂🤦‍♀️ anyway, back to the video. I know you're taking a break (I was subbed to your patreon and will be back when my husband gets OT back) and I hope everything is going well! 🖤

That indigo! I can't find anything on the Kremer website (their US website in English) about how lightfast that is. Usually genuine indigo is very fugitive. They do list it as a pigment, though, not a dye, so maybe they did a Mayan Blue type of thing where they made it a lightfast pigment...?

I really, really don't need this, and I'm not gonna get it, but daaaaaamn it's still enticing! Especially I like Kremer because of the full pans. I must admit that seeing that rock of YInMn Blue completely turned me off of it - I don't even want a CHEAP pigment if it behaves like that. That being said, I am not sure I could restrain myself if I got access to it in a tube, heh. Same with the PB30. I think my overall favourites were the cobalts, the PB27 and the indigo. I know the two last ones are not lightfast, but I have loved those hues since childhood, they just speak to me on a spiritual level.

@@igormikhaylov8421 - The YinMn is better for predictable flat washes of color, which gives you an airbrushed effect. In contrast, CBD (PB74) is better for granulation -- where the pigment particles move & separate unpredictably -- which gives you a textured effect. I personally like granulation for clouds, seascapes, sand, rocks, foliage, etc.

I am in Australia and I order from Kremer in Germany because the exchange rate and shipping is cheaper. Shipping times are pretty good and worth it- Kremer is amazing! They are the highest pigment watercolours I have hands down. It's a whole new ball game working with them due to this. It's as close to no binder as you can get I think- just enough to stick the pigment to the paper.
