Very excitingly, QoR has send me a tube of their very precious YInMN blue watercolor. So we test this color and compare it to the other YInMN blue that is available, one made by Kremer.
** Please note that this color is not commercially available, so please do not overwhelm their customer service by enquiring about it. I am sure as soon as it is commercially available, they will let me know and of course I will let you know straight away. **

Wow the granulation texture on Qor's YinMin is stunning. I tried to get on the pre-order list for this last year, but never heard anything back from them and wasn't sure if they were still going forward with making it. This looks a lot more textural than the samples I got from Schmincke and A. Gallo. Thanks for sharing :)

Oh, can I look forward to a KimCrick video coming soon?! Yeah this one makes my heart beat a bit faster, like for a building in the evening (Venice, not one of the super-bright blue buildings, but I have a picture I tried in several indigos, but it just wasn't right.) O/T, I'm close to trying W&N Smalt; your other recs have never failed me! ❤️

I was debating A. Gallo's blue, how do you like it?
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
@@morganadams2122 I found both Schmincke and A. Gallo's YinMin blues to be beautiful, but very similar to ultramarine blue pb29. Looking at this QOR video from Oto, I think that Qor's looks more unique in its texture - there was definitely less granulation in the A. Gallo version. I feel like YinMin is really just for serious collector/pigment nerd completionists who appreciate subtle differences between colors. That being said, A. Gallo makes lovely paints that paint well, have a high pigment load, smell pleasantly of oregano oil, are packaged beautifully and are definitely made with care to feel "worth it". A. Gallo has some incredibly beautiful colors, rich dark burnt umbers and a gorgeous convenience mix called harbor blue if you're scoping out other colors too :)

@@MelanCholy2001 I'll definitely do some videos regarding YinMin and Smalt (genuine and hues, like W&N's variant of ultramarine violet) in the future. This next month is gonna be packed busy with all the new Roman Szmal releases, Schmincke super granulating and some fun rare pigment spotlights - never a dull moment in the art world :D

dang girl, i remember when you got your kremer yinmn blue you were so overjoyed but now you seem even more so. i am jealous yet so happy for you! i am also happy that you finally got a chance to really try out qor paints, now you can see why so many of us love them & don't mind the price difference so much. i finally broke down & bought some schmincke wc which took me awhile to find the right ones (for me) to build a pallet, all the while though i kept thinking of getting finally set up so that i could spend my change on qor. now it will be easier with your fantastic qor videos to see which ones i want to get first & you definitely showed me some i eager to add. tsmfs

I'm a BIG fan of QOR now, mostly as a result of your videos. I love all your reviews and also the categorical systematic way you approach them. To my mind, you are the gold standard in watercolor paint reviews. I always seek you out when I have a question about a color, to see if you already have a video on it. And sometimes I just watch your videos as I am trying to wind down to sleep, because they are so soothing and informative and beautiful. And btw: anytime I have a plan to make a purchase at Jackson's I literally go to You Tube, just so I can open up your affiliate link and then hop over to Jackson's so that you will get whatever credit is available! Because I so appreciate the excellent work you are doing and want my purchases to support your channel. Thank you Dr. Oto...keep being you! You are awesome!

Me recently getting both Roman Szmal's Cobalt Blue Deep and Schmincke's French Ultramarine and thinking I have my perfect supergranulating warm blues and then seeing the granulation on QoR's!!! Will try a mix PB74 and PB29 and see if I can get a similar effect. That said, were this available to purchase I would strongly consider getting it to satisfy my nerdy needs.

That’s pretty and I like how it doesn’t react to blossoming much. I do have to ask, what is the drying shift for both of them? One seems to be more gray than the other but I’m not in front of the color so I can’t tell. As well, when mixed with other colors, does the granulation still show up visibly or does it melt in? How does it react with ultramarine blue or other granulating colors?

the kimer version almost looks like its painted on a different paper, the granulation is so regularly spaced, whereas the QOR seems more random. It would be interesting to show this yinmin next to a swatch of QOR ultramarine blue. several years ago, crayola introduced a new blue crayon, which they said was the first new blue in many years , i wonder if its the same pigment ?
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 2 жыл бұрын
Both the QoR and Kremer were swatched on the same paper, so the difference you see are in the paint, not the paper.
@Lemu_with_a_shirt

If you look up yinmn blue, crayola does pop up immediately. Apparently they were "inspired by yinmn blue", they didn't use any of the pigment.

Hi, QoR! Has Golden licensed any other pigments coming out of the Subramanian team's work? The novel green, purple, or orange? Not that I'm greedy or anything....
@jaredtreanor8499
@jaredtreanor8499 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually the pigment companies that do the licensing directly with the lab teams, not the paint maker. In this case, the rights to YinMn are owned by Shepherd Color Company. All pigment manufacturers are on the hunt for new pigments all the time, but they generally are seeking pigments for industrial applications as that's what uses the most paint (cars, planes, construction materials, etc.)

Lovely! What about comparing it to Schminke s-granulating (I think?) glacier blue? *(Edit: I was looking at Galaxy Black and Deep Sea Blue. Decided I didn't like the color mixes they made!)* Okay I'm off to find your Schminke Glacier series, brb! 😂 QoR was very awesome to send you a tube! I'm quite fond of it... I've mixed my cobalt blue with DS lunar black to get a more subdued blue, but I'm at my 1 year mark and don't think I have the know-how. (Plus IIRC you weren't that into the super-granulating blues?) BRB!
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 2 жыл бұрын
oh I love the super granulating colors, I just feel that they released A LOT of very similar colors. If you want to get somewhere close to the Yinmn, then get a really heavility granulating ultramarine blue, like a strong intense one, and mix it with a bit of cobalt blue.
